John Maeda is the first designer to be appointed President of RSID or any other college, according to an interview published today by the Wall Street Journal. Certainly the first design school or designer covered in the WSJ, he's described as, Mr. Maeda, age 42, looks disarmingly like the cartoon figure on the cover of "Computers for Dummies"; he says he represents an intertwining of art and design, technology and the handmade. From his interview, "A designer is someone who constructs while he thinks, someone for whom planning and making go together," says Mr. Maeda, cocking his head, widening his eyes, moving his hands as if he were shaping a pot. Mr. Maeda considers himself post-digital; he has outgrown his fascination with hardware and is driven by ideas. "I want to reform technology. All the tools are the same; people make the same things with them. Everyone asks me, 'Are you bringing technology to RISD?' I tell them, no, I'm bringing RISD to technology." He describes a visit to the campus by an executive from Yahoo. Mr. Maeda took him to see the visual resources center in the new library. Hundreds of thousands of drawings, photographs and news clippings, and images of art, architecture and decorative arts -- on slides -- are cataloged and stored in old-fashioned metal and wood file cabinets. The Yahoo executive was stunned. "This is a real live Google!" Better, says Mr. Maeda. Read the whole interview Illustration credit: Ism ...

"Amidst all the attention given to the sciences as to how they can lead to the cure of all diseases and daily problems of mankind, I believe that the biggest breakthrough will be the realization that the arts, which are conventionally considered “useless,” will be recognized as the whole reason why we ever try to live longer or live more prosperously. On the eve of his inauguration as president of the Rhode Island School of Design , John Maeda gave a wide-ranging interview to Dominique Browning in yesterday's Wall Street Journal . Among the Maeda-isms: "I want to reform technology. All the tools are the same; people make the same things with them. Everyone asks me, 'Are you bringing technology to RISD?' I tell them, no, I'm bringing RISD to technology." "Companies know that they can't get any further with their left-brain processing; they are dying to engage the right brain. Artists change how we see the world -- and that can have value in the way people do business." "A designer is someone who constructs while he thinks, someone for whom planning and making go together." While working on my undergraduate degree I used to take some time to sit in Waldo Library and read magazines — looking for visual inspiration, interesting ideas, etc. I loved to read about everything. John Maeda has just returned from several days of what he calls "summer camp at Harvard," where he took a crash course in how to be a college president, said a column in  The Wall Street Journal on September 2.  "I don't know how to do this job!" he says. "But I know how to learn! I love to learn!" On Sept. 12, Mr. Maeda will be inaugurated as the 16th president of the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, founded in 1877 as one of the country's first colleges to offer a combined education in arts and design. He emphasizes that he is the first designer to be appointed president of RISD, to say nothing of any college. I would guess he is also the only college president who has designed sneakers (such is his cult status that his first shoe for Reebok, dubbed the "Timetanium," sold out in 14 hours). Mr. Maeda's ultimate goal is to bring RISD into a global dialogue about innovation. "This is the right time. The world is saying, what did we miss? Companies know that they can't get any further with their left-brain processing; they are dying to engage the right brain. Artists change how we see the world -- and that can have value in the way people do business." He cites the recent popularity of several books, such as Daniel Pink's "A Whole New Mind -- Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future" (never mind that the idea of ruling anything, much less the future, is entirely left brain), Roger Martin's "The Opposable Mind ," and his own book, ...

Jump ropers get air at Art Center's Serious Play conference Show's over, kids! Design conferences have become exercises in regenerated, wasteful spectacle. A self-described conference junkie shows us how to bring back the magic. "Have I died?" I swooned, gnawing my way into a third mound of chili cheese French fries. These were not your typical chili cheese fries, mind you. These fries came with a full condiment bar; overflowing, help-yourself buckets of offbeat fry adornment that included three-- three! --varieties of mayonnaise. I nodded back at Bruce Nussbaum between large, ungainly forkfuls of cheese sauce swirled with so much ketchup that it had turned pink, too focused on deciding which flavored mayo I'd ladle over my next serving (chipotle or truffle?) to actually pay attention to a word he was saying. What I heard instead was my inner monologue shrieking over the mastication of fried potatoes: "Now this is what I call a design conference." Art Center's third biennial conference, Serious Play , held this past May, was packed with such sensory overload. There were blinking Google martini glasses and sleek Steelcase seating; rockstar designers and rocket scientists. I made friends with Eames Demetrios. I talked physics with a Mentos-and-Coke fountain-making scientist. When I left I had two grand-slam presentations still ringing in my ears: The adorable John Maeda and a heartfelt Paula Scher . But even after my fry binge, I fou ...

On Sept. 12, John Maeda will be inaugurated as the 16th president of the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, founded in 1877 as one of the country's first colleges to offer a combined education in arts and design. He emphasizes that he is the first designer to be appointed president of RISD, to say nothing of any college. Mr. Maeda has actually arrived with clear ideas about how to do his new job. He has launched an "open source administration" in which everyone is welcome to trade questions, complaints and observations about campus life and work online; he started a blog immediately so that the community could share in his first impressions of the school. He spends at least an hour a day blogging. Read more at:http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122031259187688831.html ...

In their first collaboration, graphic designer John Maeda along with Reebok designed the Timetanium which was inspired by Time. His second design, the Emoretion, drew from Emotion.  His newest design, the Struccess, comes from the Law #9: Failure.  Maeda says, “if you fail, keep trying – struggle to reach some form of success.” Using three of Reebok’s state-of-the-art technologies, the InstaPump Fury is Professor Maeda’s canvas, and his handwritten code that decorates the shoe’s lining creates puddles of graphics all over the shoe.  With so many parts – from the pump to the carpet fiber to the Hexalite – it’s a whole different animal. Available now, there are only 300 pairs of the Struccess worldwide with only a portion dropping on Reebok’s website . Get in quick yo! Video cannot be displayed. From John Maeda's original 16 (-3) laws of simplicity come my 6 favourite: A complex system of many functions can be simplified by carefully grouping related functions. The positive emotional response derived from a simplicity experience has less to do with utility, and more to do with saving time. The more you know about something beforehand, the simpler it will ultimately be perceived. In order to "feel," you gotta have noise. Too much noise, and all you've got is noise. The more care, attention, and effort applied to that which is less, the more it shall be perceived as more than it really is. A pure and resonant experience is only as simple as the greater context where it is appreciated. - John Maeda ...
