John McCain had plenty of good reasons to unload the Rev. John C. Hagee from his bandwagon Thursday. At the top of the list were quotations from the Texas preacher expressing his belief that the rise of Hitler and the Holocaust were part of God's plan to hasten the creation of Israel. "Obviously, I find these remarks and others deeply offensive and indefensible, and I repudiate them. I did not know of them before Rev. Hagee's endorsement, and I feel I must reject his endorsement as well," McCain said in a statement. But of the beliefs that McCain could take issue with, Hagee's views on the Shoah are probably among the less disturbing. [ more ... ] ...

By Mary Ann Akers Sarah Palin's now famous "lipstick" joke from her acceptance speech Wednesday night is generating lots of buzz in Democratic circles and the liberal blogosphere. Not because of how funny it was, but because of its similarity to another (in)famous one-liner delivered by controversial evangelical pastor John Hagee. Palin, who, like Hagee, is an evangelical Christian, had Republicans inside St. Paul's Xcel Energy Center doubled over laughing when she said, "What's the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick." Hagee, in his book "What Every Man Wants in a Woman," wrote, "Do you know the difference between a woman with PMS and a snarling Doberman pinscher? The answer is lipstick." On MSNBC this morning, McCain campaign spokesperson Tucker Bounds touted the fact that Todd Palin is a “stay-at-home-dad.” Interestingly, radical cleric and erstwhile McCain endorser Rev. John Hagee insists that, in the Lord’s eyes, a stay-at-home-dad is “a bum” who is “worse than an infidel.” “Hell is your future home,” Hagee says. Watch it: ...

Many are the riveting questions if Sen. John McCain picks Sen. Joe Lieberman as his running-mate (speculation stirred here ). Does it make McCain the Sen. Al Gore of 2008? Does McCain therefore lose, grow a beard, gain weight, and start a foundation? Does Lieberman stand up at this convention, as he did at the other one, but this time give a whole new meaning to his tag line, "Only in America"? Does Lieberman continue to embrace the controversial Rev. Hagee -- as he did just a few weeks ago , and compare him to Moses -- now that McCain has renounced Hagee over the pastor's dicey comments? Some of Hagee's printed quotes: "The Roman Catholic Church, which was supposed to carry the light of the gospel, plunged the world into the dark ages. "[John Paul II] will be remembered for staring down Communism and embracing people of all faiths and colors. He will lovingly be remembered for his bold stand against abortion. (Lieberman is avowedly "pro-choice"). "When Hitler signed a treaty with the Vatican in Rome, he said "I am only continuing the work of the Catholic Church." Editorial "The media" is being accused of sexism for asking questions about Sarah Palin that are not asked of a man, but is that fair? Mrs. Palin is the mother of a four-month old baby; it is reported that she returned to work just three days after his premature birth at a small Alaska hospital with no NICU, after flying eight hours and driving another even though her water had broken. Put aside the far-reaching suspicions raised by such a dramatic birth story, and focus on the facts - would it be reasonable to ask a male candidate the same questions? Of course not. What the right-wing talking points (media bias! sexism!) miss is the specifics. Questions are not being raised about her family because she is a working mother - there are literally millions of working moms who juggle both career and family successfully, and no one is suggestiong they shouldn't or are somehow inferior mothers for it. The interest is piqued because she is a working mother of 1.) a teenaged girl in crisis and 2.) an infant with special needs, both of whom require considerable time and attention from their parents, campaigning for high office that will likewise take much of her time and attention. The "hands off" cries going out from McCain surrogates seem to be an over-reaction to a natural curiosity - how will she manage? Todd Palin has been called a "stay-home dad," (which McCain supporter John Hagee called "worse than an infidel" ) but the New York Ti ...

Think Progress notes that McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds was on MSNBC proudly noting that Todd Palin is a stay-at-home-dad. McCain supporter John Hagee has something to say about that. "You're too lazy to work and support your children. I'm talking about men. You call yourself Mr. Mom. God calls you a bum. St. Paul says you are worse than an infidel. Let me look you right in the eye and tell you that hell is your future home if all you do is sit on your backside and let your wife support you in your life." - Meteor Blades Gloria Steinem writes Palin: wrong woman, wrong message . Ken Silverstein and Sebastian Jones have listened to some of the sermons given by Sarah Palin's preachers, Mike Rose of Juneau Christian Center, and David Pepper of Church on the Rock in Wasilla. The clips show why the religious right is so excited about Palin; she attends theocratic churches that extol the myth of the "Christian nation," disparage evolution, claim that the only way to heaven is through Christ, and marvel at how we are living in the last days before Armageddon and the Second Coming. Yet so far nothing has emerged showing the preachers disparaging Islam, like Rod Parsley did, or claiming that God sent Hitler for a good purpose, as did John Hagee -- statements that provoked John McCain to reject their endorsements. Still, McCain can run, but he can't hide from Hagee; some of his closest friends and advisers, including Joe Lieberman , Gary Bauer , and Sam Brownback , are close with Hagee (and Parsley, in Bauer's and Brownback's cases). And Rose's church, Juneau Christian Center, is hosting one of Hagee's "Nights to Honor Israel" in Juneau in March 2009, according to the Christians United for Israel web site. (The original web page has been taken down, but the cache shows the Juneau church on the schedule.) Indeed in one of the excerpts Rose refers to what can only be a Christians United for Israel gathering involving Newt Gingrich and the prime minister of Israel. Nonetheless, thus far, the sermons by Rose and Pepper show ...
