The Who lead singer Roger Daltrey and guitarist Pete Townshend may qualify for their AARP cards, but they kicked the doors down with a rousing montage of their greatest hits to an SRO crowd in Miami at the Super Bowl half time show, April MacIntyre (monstersandcritics) reported. Carrie Underwood sang the national anthem as four F-15s zoomed over the stadium at the Sun Life Stadium. The Who performed a mashed up set that included hits such as Pinball Wizard, Teenage Wasteland, Who are You and Won’t get Fooled Again. The Who Super Bowl 2010 halftime review from chicagotribune The Who’s Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend huffed and puffed as they tried to match the energy and bravado of songs originally recorded more than 30 years ago Sunday in their showcase slot as Super Bowl halftime headliners. These gruff, grizzled rock ‘n’ roll lifers gave it a good go as they chased past glories. At least Daltrey and Townshend weren’t lip-synching as they struck poses amid the lasers and pyrotechnics. Townshend in shades and porkpie hat swung through windmill chords, Daltrey bellowed and blew through a harmonica solo, and drummer Zak Starkey (yes, Ringo’s son) wore a union-jack shirt for the occasion, evoking the band’s earliest publicity photos from Britain’s Mod era. Of course, back then Keith Moon was the band’s drummer and John Entwistle its bassist. Both are long gone, and The Who has never really been the same since. No matter, Daltrey and To ... “I remember standing comfortably, in the mud up to my waist, watching Keith Moon and John Entwistle with a girl in the back of a station wagon in the distance, and thinking there’s no way I could wade there in time.” - Pete Townshend on Woodstock. Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News When the Who take the stage, it's deservedly an event. With a catalog 40 years in the making, frontman Roger Daltrey and guitarist Pete Townshend , the last two remaining original members of the band, have earned that right. On Saturday night at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles, Daltrey was at the helm of a more low-key event, taking to the stage as part of his 'Use It Or Lose It' solo tour with another Townshend by his side, Pete's younger brother Simon. But the music of the Who continued to assert itself alongside Daltrey's solo work. Daltrey took advantage of the smaller size and lack of pomp and circumstance. After opening with a rocking "Who Are You" that showed off his six-piece band, the singer reminisced about late great Who bassist John Entwistle and talked about how the next song, which the band rarely performed anymore, hadn't been the same without his fallen band mate. ... John “The Ox” Entwistle , bassist for The Who and astounding musical genius, would have been 65 today. Of course, Entwistle is not the only massively-famous-but-dead rock star posthumously celebrating a birthday today. John Lennon would have turned 69 on today’s date had he not been assassinated by the psychotic Mark David Chapman in 1980. John Lennon’s son Sean also turns 34 today, and Al Jorgensen of Ministry and a zillion other projects has lived for 51 years as of Friday, October 9th. Happy Birthday guys! ... The late bassist for The Who, John Entwistle, was born today in 1944. "The Ox" passed on June 27 2002. Above is a video of the band performing one of Entwistle's tunes, "Heaven and Hell," in front of over 600,000 people at the Isle of Wight Music Festival in 1970. By the way, I use this song as the theme to my show on BlogTalk Radio. ... Source: forum.dvdtalk.com --- 154 days ago
I have a friend doing a report on the differences between flatwound and roundwound bass strings. I told him I think John Entwistle of the Who was one of the first to use roundwound strings on songs. I read that: SWING BASS 66 (Stainless Steel or Nickel Roundwound) Rotosound was the first string company to produce this kind of string. Introduced in 1962 it changed the sound of the instrument instantly. can anyone think of any earlier examples? Maybe ones from around the same time period? They became much more common in the 70s and now it seems to be the only kind of string bass players will even touch. Note- I love flatwounds :) thanks for any ideas ...
