Longtime Squawker readers know that I aggressively advocated the Yanks signing Joe Girardi as manager. But I have to say that some of his leadership this year has been not what I expected. This season has obviously been a disappointing one for the Yanks. I blame Brian Cashman most of all for this season, but there is more than enough blame to go around. And one of the more head-scratching things about the year is the effect Girardi has had so far on this team: I thought Girardi would be a disciplinarian, yet Robinson Cano and Melky Cabrera sleepwalked through most of the year without any repercussions. I thought Girardi would have an emphasis on fundamentals, yet this team constantly makes sloppy errors and goofy plays. I thought Girardi would help guide a mentally tough team, yet the Yankees cave at the first sign of adversity. I thought Girardi would be unafraid to call bad play what it is, yet he has made excuse after excuse in the press for this team. I thought Girardi would have innovative plays and out-of-the-box thinking, but that hasn’t happened very often, unless you count Bobby Meacham’s inability to judge whether runners will be thrown out at the plate as innovative. On the plus side, Girardi - and Dave Eiland - have done a great job managing the bullpen this year. And Joe’s emphasis on better conditioning has had an effect on some players - Johnny Damon, for example, showed up this year in shape and ready to play, and ...

Joe Girardi has long wanted Bernie Williams to return to Yankee Stadium. If the manager has his way, Williams' appearance at Sunday's finale ceremonies will only be the beginning of the former center fielder being around the team again. ...

Joe Girardi had sent the message already when he yanked Robinson Cano out of the game on Sunday. So when he benched Cano Monday night as well, Girardi was making it clear this was punishment for more than just one crime. ...

It's too early to say Joe Girardi will not be the manager the Yankees thought they hired, but this hasn't been said enough: Girardi has not had a good year. A thought that was impossible to ignore last night as the homestanding Yankees lopped another meaningless game off their schedule with a 6-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox just hours after baseball announced that Joe Torre, the guy they threw out to make room for Girardi, was nominated for the Hall of Fame. ...

What a great world this is that this can happen: A. Mariano Rivera leaves team to take MRI on his shoulder. Big news, obviously. B. Manager Joe Girardi offers the nugget of news to reporters before the game. But he does not mention shoulder, describing the test simply as the exit MRI that every player goes through, just a week early. The reason, he said, was because Mariano complained of "cranky" body. Girardi also says he expects him to be back ready to pitch this weekend (in meaningless games). C. General manager Brian Cashman makes himself easily accessible to beat reporters after Girardi's pre-game manager session and specifies Mariano's shoulder as the reason for the MRI. He does not rule out surgery. He also says this is an out-of-ordinary MRI - not the typical exit MRI one week early. D. Girardi, after the game, sticks to his story in a tense session with reporters. - In the most bizarre twist - E. Video of Girardi squirming is available on YESNetwork.com , the team-owned network. ...

Ed Price, Yankee beat writer for the troubled Star Ledger, has been one of the more reliable reporters this year. He’s consistently offered up what I feel are fair assessments of the team through thick and thin. I see a few of the regular commenters have already seen my column today on Cano and Girardi . Chip, it's R-I-E-B-E-R. Jim A., thanks for the kind words. I've got a new column today on what I consider the lackluster closing down of the Stadium. Let me know what you think. Joe Girardi apologized to Yankees beat writers yesterday for lying to them about injuries and said he'd try not to lie next year. Here's the statement Eric Mangini (genius coach of the Jets) needs to make immediately: "I would like to apologize all human beings for my senseless policy of pretending that the world would come to an end if me or my players spoke about injuries. Since I have won almost nothing as a head coach and in fact took this organization a step back last season and would have been facing 6-10 this year if Brett Favre hadn't fallen into my lap, I will no longer put my players in the position of having to lie or obfuscate. If a bone is protruding through one of their ankles, I will permit them to say it hurts. Now I am going to write on a chalkboard 1000 times: I am not bigger than the game. I am not bigger than the game. I am not..." ...

It should come as no surprise the Yankees are going to bring back Joe Girardi next season. Let's not forget he is signed for TWO more years. The more interesting question with Girardi will come this time next year. If the Yankees are not in the playoffs again, do they sign Girardi to an extension or let him enter his final year as a lame duck? Okay, we're getting ahead of ourselves. Considering Hank Steinbrenner gave the public announcement that Girardi will come back for the second year of his three-year contract, it's probably worth wondering how much longer Hank Steinbrenner will be doing this. For starters, he isn't very much involved. His brother, Hal, puts in so many more hours in the office and in the Bronx. Hank just likes to talk. Which is fine. But, at what point will Hank get bored? ...

Rays pitcher Juan Salas suffered a seizure yesterday afternoon at Fenway Park. ( Tampa Trib ) Joe Girardi will be back as Yankees manager because according to Hank Steinbrenner, "He's done everything he could. That's the bottom line." ( Seattle Times ) Is it even a question that the Yankees are going to get Mark Teixeira and CC for that matter via free agency this winter? ( OC Register ) Can the Angels win 100 games? They might have to in order to secure the top seed in the playoffs. ( OC Register ) Billy Wagner's elbow will require surgery and he will miss most of next season. K-Rod anyone? ( Newsday ) Is JD Drew the added weapon the Sox need in order to overtake the Rays for the pennant? ( Miami Herald ) 456 consecutive sellouts, impressive. Perhaps the New York Yankees need to send manager Joe Girardi to media relations training classes this winter. Girardi's latest tete-a-tete with reporters over Mariano Rivera's "shoulder/cranky body" is another example of Girardi's poor media skills. The Yankee manager got ripped by several beat writers for his answers in regards to Rivera, including Mark Feinsand and Peter [...] ...

You folks want answers, and I try to get them for you. I asked Daniel Murphy what the heck the deal was with his ninth-inning bunt strikeout Thursday night. "My job was to get the bunt down," he said. "I didn't get it down." "So the third-base coach gave you the bunt sign?" I asked. "Yes," he said. I went to third-base coach Luis Aguayo. "He did it on his own," Aguayo said. No way, no how, Aguayo said, did he signal to Murphy to bunt. Based on Manuel's reactions on TV - did you see him after Murphy bunted for strike two? - I have to think the kid just got overwhelmed (uncharacteristically so) by the situation and just lost his head. Now, for the Joe Girardi lying. I listened to Dennis' boy Francesa on the way to Shea today, and Mike couldn't get enough of this story. He decided that the biggest part was Brian Cashman apologizing to reporters for Girardi's dishonesty about Mariano Rivera's shoulder . I'm sure Cashman is embarrassed that got out. But Cashman and Girardi will be fine, if Cashman re-ups. Francesa was saying today that "every coach lies about injuries," but there are lies of omission and flat-out lies, and Girardi has spoken the latter far too often this season. Specifically, he insisted that nothing was wrong with Phil Hughes, Damaso Marte and Rivera, and in all three cases, there was something wrong. Perhaps you don't care that Girardi lies to the media. Here's why I think it matters: It reflects upon poorly upon Girardi ...
