From NBC's Chris DonovanIf McCain decides to Buck conservative critics and choose Joe Lieberman as his running mate, Lieberman will again make vice presidential candidate history. In 2000 he became the first Jewish-American to serve as a vice presidential candidate (or to be on a major political party's presidential ticket for that matter), and if he joins McCain on this year's Republican ticket he will be the first man to serve as the vice presidential nominee for two different major political parties....( read more ) ...

Something interesting just happened in the last baseball game of the weekend, and it bears mentioning: Ahead 7-3 with the bases loaded, the Tampa Bay Rays elected to intentionally walk Josh Hamilton, bringing home a run and putting the tying run on base. Rays manager Joe Maddon’s unorthodox strategy paid off, as Dan Wheeler struck out Marlon Byrd to end the game, a 7-4 Tampa Bay win. Of course, if you’re like me, you immediately wonder: when was the last time there was an intentional walk with the bases loaded? Well, I can tell you: I actually remembered that it was Buck Showalter who made the decision to intentionally walk Barry Bonds with the bases loaded. But I did not remember, and had to look up on Baseball-Reference’s invaluable Play Index, that it was May 28, 1999, that Gregg Olson was the Arizona pitcher or that Brent Mayne made the last out. In this case, Bonds represented the winning run at the plate, but the Diamondbacks beat the Giants, 8-6. Before that? The Play Index, which goes back to 1956, didn’t list another intentional walk with the bases loaded, though it did list one particularly interesting intentional walk - on June 3, 2002, at Yankee Stadium, Roger Clemens issued an intentional walk to Gary Matthews Jr. on which the fourth ball was a wild pitch, bringing home Jay Gibbons with the first run of the game in the second inning. That’s an all-Mitchell Report play, by the way, with Clemens, Matthews and Gibbons. T ...

Kicker Taylor Mehlhaff and quarterback Tyler Palko were among the players waived on Saturday as the New Orleans Saints reduced their roster to 53 players. Mehlhaff, a sixth-round choice out of Wisconsin in the 2008 Draft, failed to beat out veteran Martin Gramatica for kicking chores during the preseason. Mehlhaff made two of his three field goal attempts during the warm-up period, while Gramatica was a perfect 4-for-4. Palko did little in the preseason to prompt New Orleans to keep him as a third-string option behind Drew Brees and Mark Brunell. The Pittsburgh product posted just a 69.9 passer rating and was sacked seven times in August. Also released on Saturday were guard Andy Alleman, guard Tim Duckworth, linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar, wide receiver Skyler Green, running back Lynell Hamilton, defensive tackle Orien Harris, linebacker William Kershaw, tight end Buck Ortega, defensive end Josh Savage, fullback Olaniyi Sobomehein and wide receiver Joe West. Notables among that group include Alleman, a third-round Draft choice in 2007 who never appeared in a game for the Saints; Green, who played in seven games with the Bengals last season; and Savage, who spent time on New Orleans' active roster a year ago. ... Shooting from the lipLooking back at a weekend of televised sports ... Worst programmingThe sour taste left in our mouths by CBS showing mixed martial arts in May had finally disappeared when CBS sunk to its lowest depths again Saturday by showing another MMA card. We saw more blood, more over-the-top announcing and more disturbing images of men and women beating each another into submission. Sen. John McCain has come up with the perfect description for MMA: human cockfighting. Still, it has an audience, and that's all CBS apparently cares about. The network makes money, and who cares if our children see on free TV faces split open or blood soaked into the mat? Yes, I know. If you don't like it, you can turn the channel, and if you don't want your kids to watch it, then monitor what they watch. I know all that. It still doesn't excuse one of our major networks from taking responsibility for showing this monstrosity. More from MMAOne more thing about this CBS-MMA mess. Announcers Gus Johnson and Mauro Ranallo don't sound like they're calling these fights. It's more like they're selling them to the public. Is that really their job? Shouldn't they just call the fights instead of telling us how great this alleged sport is and making it sound like a two-hour commercial? Johnson could be heard encouraging the audience to applaud the fighters. Can you imagine Joe Buck doing that at a baseball game? Or Al Michaels at a football game? Even ... By Kate Sheppard Barack Obama is expected to reveal his vice presidential selection sometime this week, possibly as soon as today, though it's looking like a campaign event in Springfield, Ill. on Saturday is the most likely location for an announcement. If you've turned on cable news in the past few days, the pundits have been jabbering non-stop about who he might select. Most speculate that the running is probably down to four possible candidates: Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius , Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine , and Delaware Sen. Joe Biden . In past references to his as-yet-unannounced veep pick, Obama used the phrase "he or she." But in a campaign event yesterday in North Carolina, Obama dropped the "or she" (via Marc Ambinder ): Let me tell you first what I won't do. I won't hand over my energy policy to my vice president, without knowing necessarily what he's doing. I wont have my vice president engineering my foreign policy for me. The Buck will stop with me, because I will be the president. [...] But here's what I do want from my vice president, I want somebody who has integrity, who's in politics for the right reasons. I want somebody who is independent. Somebody who is able to say to me, 'You know what, Mr. President, I think you're wrong on this and here's why,' and will give me [applause] who will help me think through major issues and consult with me, would be a key advisor. I want somebody who is capa ... Source: themoderatevoice.com --- 15 days ago
David Brooks wrote a good piece yesterday about the changes that have gone on in the McCain camp. It shows how McCain, the man who wanted to run a “maverick” campaign, has been forced to run a conventional campaign after all. So have expressed their disgust with McCain having taken the so-called “low road.” And others, like myself and Brooks feel a sense of sadness that the old McCain has been pushed to the wayside. But the article got me thinking about how hard it is to Buck the “system” and also that candidates have to choose between just presenting ideas, and actually winning. As Brooks shows, McCain did try to run a different campaign that amounted to very little: McCain started his general-election campaign in poverty-stricken areas of the South and Midwest. He went through towns where most Republicans fear to tread and said things most wouldn’t say. It didn’t work. The poverty tour got very little coverage on the network news. McCain and his advisers realized the only way they could get TV attention was by talking about the subject that interested reporters most: Barack Obama. McCain started with grand ideas about breaking the mold of modern politics. He and Obama would tour the country together doing joint town meetings. He would pick a postpartisan running mate, like Joe Lieberman. He would make a dramatic promise, like vowing to serve for only one totally nonpolitical term. So far it hasn’t worked. Obama vetoed the town ...
