On Sunday, Sept. 21, the streets from Hopkinton to Boston were filled with approximately 8,000 people taking part in the 20th annual Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk, presented by Hyundai Motor America. This included 11 people who have participated in the Walk every year since it began in 1989. This year’s goal is to raise $7.2 million to Fund innovative adult and pediatric cancer research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. During the past 19 years, walkers and their financial supporters have contributed more than $51 million to help reach the goal of a world without cancer. Walkers can still receive pledges to support their efforts, and have until November to collect and send in all of their pledges. All the participants - whether it was their 20th Walk or their first, whether they took on the entire marathon or one of the other four routes, or whether they walked in honor or in memory of loved ones affected by cancer - walked to help change the odds for those with the disease. The day began in Hopkinton with those walking the full Boston Marathon as well as those who took advantage of a new option to walk a half marathon from Hopkinton to Wellesley. Most participants opted for the half-marathon which started in Wellesley, and others left from Boston College on the 5-mile route. Many patients and their families walked the final three miles from the Boston start, escorted by more than 100 chiefs of police from across Mass ...

The Saugus American Little League girls AAA softball all-star team recently competed in a 12-game tournament to help the Jimmy Fund raise critical funds for research and patient care at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. For their fundraising efforts, the Saugus girls raise the second highest amount in their district, and the team was rewarded with tickets to a Pawtucket Red Sox game. Playing against teams from Lynn and Salem, the locals were impressive throughout the tournament utilizing a combination of offense, defense and pitching. The explosive Saugus offense, which averaged 12 runs per game, had a number of players with high batting averages, including Brittany Buckley (.647), Julia Daly (.600), Danielle Strangie (.563) and Nicole Jameson (.550). They wore out opposing pitching throughout the tournament. Joining their teammates in the hit parade were Tory Beauchamp, Victoria Benoit, Sophia Cogliano, Shannon Gayron, Amanda Poussard, Victoria Sparages, Brooke Westmoreland, Kathryn White, Courtney Whyte and Pauline Ascolese, who unfortunately had her playing time cut short, because of a fractured finger. However, she continued to make key contributions to the team in other ways. They were impressive with the bats, delivering key hits. In the latter stages of the tournament, pitching and defense proved to be key ingredients for their success. Setting the tone for the locals was the dazzling pitching performances of Buckley, D ...

"Team Elliot" will walk on Sunday, Sept. 21, in the Jimmy Fund Walk to honor Elliot Carlin Handin, who at 3 months of age was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Infant ALL, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Elliot underwent a bone marrow transplant in September 2006, and is now an active 3-year-old toddler. His family continues to raise money for the research of Infant Leukemia so that others, hopefully, will not have to face the daunting challenges of being told their baby has a life-threatening disease, and for the families who have lost their babies to infant ALL.  Infant ALL is an under-funded disease in the very early stages of research which prompted Elliot's parents to establish a Fund in his name, "Elliot's Fund." Katy Carlin, Elliot's Nana and longtime Danvers resident, invites you to join "Team Elliot," or make a donation to: "The Jimmy Fund Marathon Walk" and mail to: Katy Carlin, 94 Centre Street, Danvers, MA 01923, to support her 13.1 mile walk on Sept. 21, 2008.  To join the team, www.jimmyfundwalk.org/teamelliot Then click on "join our team." There are several options for the walk: 26.2 miles, 13.1 miles, 5 miles, and 3 miles. Join Elliot and his family at the 13.1-mile mark, or choose another distance.    ...

Once he secures two decades of perfect attendance at the start, Framingham resident Dick Gellis plans to conclude Sunday's Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk with a little celebration and reflection. "When I cross that finish line, I'm going to yell out '20 years!"' the 65-year-old said late last week. "I can't be any prouder of that. It's part of my life." Among the walkers from the first Jimmy Fund event in 1989, 11 have continued year in and year out, including Gellis and 75-year-old Ashland resident Lou Goldberg. "I just made sure every September that I set aside time for it," Goldberg said. "It was a given." Now entering its 20th year, the walk raises money for Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and its efforts to conduct research and treat adults and children. Depending on how much they raise and their inclination, walkers can begin at the Marathon's Hopkinton start, at the half-way mark in Wellesley, at Boston College for the five-mile course or at Harvard Medical School for a three-mile walk. Registration is still open this morning and donations can still be made, organizers said, with more information available by visiting www.jimmyfundwalk.org calling 866-JF1WALK. With an injured leg, Gellis said this year marks the first time he will leave from Wellesley rather than cover the full course. Still, "a bad leg is a bad leg," he said, before turning to Dana-Farber's younger patients. "If those kids can do what they do at th ...
