The October/November issue of the Hoover Institution's Policy Review contains an in-depth review by Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor Craig Lerner of Senator Jim Webb's most recent book, A Time to Fight: Reclaiming a Fair and Just America . Webb (D-Va.) was elected to the United States Senate in 2006 and is a novelist whose works include bestsellers that have received critical acclaim. Lerner traces themes such as manliness, the martial virtues, and the concept of blood as destiny through Webb's novels and points to the author's effort to recover the pride of the Scots-Irish settlers and tell their story in his latest book. It is those Americans whose fighting and individualistic culture is now centered in states that tend to vote Republican in national elections, says Lerner. "Undoing the conection between the Scots-Irish culture and the party of Lincoln is the core of Webb's project in A Time to Fight ," he explains. Fighting Words , Policy Review , October/November. By Craig S. Lerner. Excerpt: "In Webb’s view, the top echelon of the Democratic Party still consists of people who made their bones fighting the culture wars of the 1960 s and 1970 s and whose priorities are misguided as a result. Despite these concerns, he threw in with the Democrats soon after President George W. Bush’s election in 2000 . He suggests there were two reasons. First is that the Republicans have, through various policies, coddled the 'very ... Source: www.buzzflash.net --- 18 days ago
It's time for Senator Jim Webb to fulfill his campaign promise to fight for economic fairness. The Democratic party needs to reject the Bush/Cheney plan. They must not repeat the same old mistake once again. The Bush appointee--Paulson--should NOT be granted unlimited powers with no oversight and all the money he wants to spend. The Democrats need to work with Independent Senator Bernie Sanders and his sound plan to pay for the Wall Street bailout. I'm an Independent and I'm praying that Obama, Webb, and the Democratic Party give me a good reason to vote for them. ... Source: www.wsls.com --- 21 days ago

Please vote no on the bailout Senators John Warner and Jim Webb. We earned this money and we don’t want it to go to Wall Street bonuses. Reform first, bailout never. Reform first. Reform second. Sen. Jim Webb, who is not exactly known for his love of campaigning, starting campaigning for fellow Democrats running for election next month. This week, he is stumping for Gerry Connolly, Fairfax County Board chairman who is running for Congress; former governor Mark R. Warner, who is running for U.S. Senate; and Tom Perriello, who is running against Rep. Virgil Goode in a southcentral district stretching from Charlottesville to Danville. Virginians unaccustomed to getting any attention from presidential candidates are suddenly at the red hot center of this campaign, and with Barack Obama down in the southern part of the state today and John McCain and Sarah Palin appearing at Van Dyke Park in Fairfax City on Wednesday, both sides are diving into exactly the parts of the state where their parties are weakest. But are the campaigns pushing the right messages in their drive to win Virginia? On Raw Fisher Radio today, I talked to strategists from both sides who agreed that the state is too close to call and that Obama probably has the tougher road ahead. Despite the string of Democratic victories that have resulted in two straight Democratic governors and Sen. Jim Webb unseating George Allen, Mudcat Saunders--the Roanoke-based consultant who helped turn Connecticut Yankee Mark Warner into a beloved figure in rural Virginia--argues that ... The New Yorker, Oct. 6A story handicaps Barack Obama's chances in an increasingly blue Virginia, focusing on the state's rural southwest. A team of Virginia Dems—including Gov. Tim Kaine, Sen. Jim Webb, and Democratic guru David "Mudcat" Saunders—weigh in on Obama's "Appalachia problem." First, organization: Obama has opened eight campaign offices in the region to McCain's one. Second, message: "Obama would be well served emphasizing a populist theme for the rest of the campaign," says Webb. … A feature reports on the covert operations of the Environmental Investigation Agency, a nonprofit group working to combat illegal logging. In the spring, both Barack Obama and John McCain strongly discouraged 527 groups from running attack ads, telling their major donors not to fund them. It actually worked well--chilling a number of efforts like David Brock's Progressive Media USA , the Moveon.org Voter Fund , and Freedom's Watch. Then, in late summer, some reports indicated Obama and McCain were rethinking their opposition to such ads. After all, they're a useful way to offset funding shortfalls and open up unorthodox new lines of attack . But by then it was too late. As NPR and the Fix have reported, most 527 groups were incapable of remobilizing so quickly--leaving the bulk of dirty work to established interest groups , re-purposed advocacy groups , and Sarah Palin . VoteVets, which is running this new ad that savages McCain for skipping out on Jim Webb's G.I. Bill , falls into the re-purposed advocacy category. Like its conservative counterpart Vets For Freedom , this combination PAC/501(c)3 group is a high-impact holdover from the 2006 election cycle and the 2007 Congressional battles over Iraq withdrawal . But they're far more involved than VFF in backing politically-friendly veterans running for Congress. In addition to hitting McCain, they're a major donor to anti-war candidates and other PACs--they've also run ads attacking Republicans in Maine , Colorado , North Carolina , and New Mexico . Last night's SASUG (pronounced "sausage" by the members) meeting was great as usual. Some familiar names were on hand to present - Webb Shoenfeld and Bruce Buck did terrific presentations (get those abstracts in guys), the BBQ was good (no pizza for this group), and group leader Jim Lowery's sense of humor is always appreciated. The meeting kicked off with a short presentation by Mike Henry, a former teacher and now Business/Community Liaison for TIER - the Texas Institute for Educational Robotics. Mr. Henry was there to stress the need for mentors, perhaps the biggest challenge faced by these types of programs. I sure hope some of the SASUG members will take him up on the offer. It's always a pleasure to make the short drive down to attend the SASUG meetings. The group is friendly, personable, and very active during the meetings. There are always a few laughs thrown in for good measure too. ... Find more results for Jim Webb on RSSMicro.com |
