When coaches predict, in August, who will be doing what next April, it's to be taken lightly. About this time a year ago, for instance, Portland Coach Nate McMillan told the Oregonian that Taurean Green was likely to hit a number of game-winners for the Blazers. Then McMillan kept Green stapled to the bench more or less every moment until he was traded (a couple of times, in fact) and eventually cut. However, for what it's worth, Jason Quick of The Oregonian : "Back home from the Olympics, where he was an assistant coach for Team USA, Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan on Thursday could finally reveal the two-week struggle he endured in Beijing. There were sleepless nights. A self-imposed muzzle on his emotions. And the uneasiness of choosing an allegiance. All because of Rudy Fernandez. The high-energy shooting guard for Spain, who will join the Blazers this month, excelled during the Olympics, which included a team-high 22 points in the gold medal loss to the Americans. And after getting a front-row view for many of Spain's games, McMillan said Fernandez, 23, is so talented that he will 'definitely' play, and play a lot, for the Blazers. ... McMillan said he envisions Fernandez playing in the second unit with Jerryd Bayless and Travis Outlaw, with the scoring focus centered on Outlaw and Fernandez. He also guaranteed Fernandez and Roy will play together." A pretty boss collection of Julius Erving stories . Not the tossed off com ...

If you're a Jordan Head, a sneaker maniac, then you really want to know read about this epic meeting of your tribe in Chicago, for the final scene of a documentary on your people. The Sixers get one last game in the Spectrum -- where Julius Erving did his thing -- before it is torn down. I have read probably 50 different articles or blog posts looking at a team's schedule for the season. ( For instance .) They all agree on one thing: [Insert team name here] got a really tough schedule this year. Welcome to the NBA, where there are no easy schedules. Kevin McHale looking at the schedule, weilding a sword . Luol Deng in London , being famous. A fascinating tale of philanthropy , involving a really rich guy and a really poor guy. I'm guessing your typical NBA player can relate to both guys better than most. I wonder if that would make them uniquely qualified to participate in creative giving. Tom Ziller has developed a statistical model that essentially deciphers how "pass-first" a guard is. If you apply those numbers to the last year of college, as Matt from Ridiculous Upside has done , it looks like none of this year's rookies have been at the high-end of the pass-first scale. (And certainly not Jerryd Bayless!) Really big mess of fancy graphs , ranking player production in a newish way, with very thorough explanations of what this brand of stat geekiness is about. "The Arbitrarian" writing on Hardwood Paroxysm, tells the tale in t ...

Petteri Koponen, the 6-5 Finnish point guard who was a 2007 first-round pick of the Portland Trail Blazers, has signed a four-year deal with Virtus Bologna of Italy. His agent, Marc Cornstein, says the deal has buyouts every summer which would make it possible for Koponen to return to the NBA. The Blazers can continue to hold Koponen's rights until 2011, although it will cost them some flexibility under the salary cap to do so. In Bologna, the 20-year-old Koponen will compete for minutes at the point guard spot with Earl Boykins. Koponen (who wants you to know that saunas and Santa Claus are from Finland ) is something of an unknown. Although he has played twice as a Blazer in summer league, he has played regular seasons only in the lightly regarded Finnish league, where he was dominant. Most scouts felt he was not so good last summer when he was 19, but much better, stronger, and more assertive in Las Vegas in 2008. Portland GM Kevin Pritchard had publicly entertained the notion of signing Koponen this year. One hurdle was that the Blazers as presently constructed -- they are adding rookie guards Jerryd Bayless and Rudy Fernandez -- are overloaded with guards. Cornstein says there was interest in Koponen from other NBA teams. "By drafting him in the first round, Portland has the right to hold onto his rights even if they don't feel he is ready for the NBA," explains Cornstein. "When we investigated trades, the Blazers say that t ...

Filed under: Trail Blazers It's a quite Labor Day for the NBA, so an excellent Jason Quick Oregonian feature on Blazer mystic Travis Outlaw is drawing some chatter . The news hook basically goes that Outlaw expects more of himself than to be a sixth man in Portland, and there's an inkling he expects more of a chance from Nate McMillan and friends. Some vital excerpts: [H]e says he would like to average 15 shots this season -- the amount [Brandon] Roy and [LaMarcus] Aldridge averaged last season -- and disputes the notion that he had the green light with the Blazers. "Noooo. Noooo," Outlaw says about the green light, prompting his imitation of Blazers coach Nate McMillan. "'Now Travis, that shot, you can get something better than that.'" [...] "I shoot jumpers like layups," Outlaw says. "Sometimes I get on a fast break and I want to pull up." That quote belongs on a Hallmark card, but let's hit the meat: Outlaw will never average 15 FGAs a night on this team. McMillan plays slow and controlled, so this isn't like Golden State or Denver where a sixth-man can average 20 per game. Roy and Aldridge were alphas last year ... and the team is adding Greg Oden , Rudy Fernandez and Jerryd Bayless . Two of those fellows gun by birthright, the other is a potentially dominant post player. Dude's usage will go down , not up. And that's before all these cats come of age. It will never get better. If Outlaw is spending his September counting pote ...

Filed under: Trail Blazers , Western , FIBA , USA Basketball Imagine Nate McMillan 's Olympic predicament. As an assistant on Mike Krzyzewski's staff, he had to concerntrate at the task at hand -- or at the very least, keep a straight face -- as Spain's Rudy Fernandez torched the Redeem Team's collection of All-Stars (and posterized Dwight Howard ) for 22 points in fewer than 18 minutes. Behind the stoic front, though, he was going nuts, just like most of the fans back in Portland. From Jason Quick of The Oregonian : "I'm sitting there (in the gold medal game) with a straight face, trying not to smile," McMillan said. " (Spain) are the guys we have to beat, but I'm caught. That's my player and I want to (he claps his hands twice) but I gotta (he makes a serious face) because we are going up against him." [...] "I was so impressed with him that it was to the point where after the second time I saw him, I didn't sleep that night because I was moving my rotations around," McMillan said. "I swear I did not sleep. I could not sleep thinking about him. Because I'm saying, 'We can put him here, do this with him, do that with him and Brandon (Roy), and do this... So he's playing for us. Oh yeah. I see that right now." So what did he dream up? For now he's planning on using Fernandez on the second team alongside Jerryd Bayless and Travis Outlaw , although Fernandez will occasionaly share the court with Brandon Roy . If Fernandez plays as w ...

This really has seemed like one of the longest off-seasons ever.  With the promising increase in wins from the season before, and the addition of some exicting new talent in the season to come, I have been chomping at the bit for them to tip the darn ball already and actually WATCH some new blazer games.  But, since we are just under two months still till the first preseason game, all we have for now is speculation and discusion.  So here is a topic I have been kicking around a little lately:     Who do you think will help this team more in the upcoming season, Rudy Fernandez or Jerryd Bayless? A lot of people are of the opinion that Jerryd''s intensity and determination and sheer fire will FORCE Nate to play him, and I tend to agree with that to some extent.  But Rudy plays with a fire of his own.  It doesn't come off as the same kind of killer instinct, nobody stands in MY way, kind of fire, but SOMETHING keeps that man moving all the time on the basketball court.  Rudy never seems to give up on a play and never seems to wear down. Positionally the door seems more open for Bayless.  With Roy holding down the shooting guard spot with a big exclamation point, Rudy getting any significant minutes soley as back up to Brandon doesn't seem very plausible. (I have mentioned before that I am an uber-optimist, and I refuse to think of the possiblity of Rudy as our "Roy injury insurance policy.")  The point guard spot is obviosly up for ...

Since we talked about Jerryd Bayless and Rudy Fernandez last week it only seems fair to begin this week with that “other” rookie, Greg Oden.   Obviously we’ve discussed him several times before but since we’re around five dozen days from his official Second Coming it seems right to go over it again and start thinking in serious terms about his contributions this season.   The first thing you notice about Oden is that he’s huge.   He’s not exactly Arvydas Sabonis or Yao Ming huge, but he’s a legit seven feet...one big wall of muscle.   That he’s also strong goes without saying.   But the thing that sets him apart is he’s cat-quick.   Watching him come from the weak side, get up in the air, and block a shot is a breathtaking experience.   It’s like, “What the…WHOA!!!”   Watching him throw down a dunk with speed and power will scare you.   Greg has got a reasonably good sense of the defensive game for a young guy.   His footwork is nice and he sees the court well.   Picking up defense at an NBA level should be natural to him.   Oden has the bulk and speed to be a good offensive player as well but this part of his game will probably take longer to develop.   He had the rudiments of a couple good offensive moves the last time we saw him but he didn’t look sure where and when to put them in play.   Dunks he can handle no problem.   That little left baseline area that Joel Przybilla hangs out in while the guards do their thing should be a ...

Matt over at sister-site Ridiculous Upside has done some interesting analysis incorporating some previous work by Tom Ziller (of Sactown Royalty  fame) on the subject of point guard purity .  Basically the idea is some guys are passers, others are scorers.  Jerryd Bayless makes an appearance in this analysis so it might be worth your while. --Dave ( blazersub@yahoo.com )   ...

Wheels said yesterday on his show that the Blazers practiced 5-on-5 for the first time yesterday and that Oden looked superb, Aldridge has gained a lot of muscle, Sergio's jumper looks better (more arc). Oden had a sequence where he blocked a shot on one end, then raced down the court and had a monsterous putback dunk on the other that impressed the entire gym. Also, he's so big that when he backs down a defender you practically can't see the defender at all, lol. He will practice every other day to ensure he doesn't overdo it. The players that attended were: Greg Oden LaMarcus Aldridge Steve Blake Jerryd Bayless Sergio Rodriguez Nicolas Batum Martell Webster Luke Jackson Steven Hill Channing Frye Jamaal Tatum Brandon Roy was watching. Joel, Raef, Travis, Ike and Rudy are not in Portland yet. You can listen to it here. <!-- m --> http://955thegame.com/Portals/0/media/W ... -08Hr1.mp3 ...

We open the season in San Antonio on October 29th, followed by Chris Paul and the Hornets at home the following night. With exciting first three games, the rest of the season has some other interesting match ups. November 20th. We will host The Lakers for the first time. (Maybe Kobe will finally tell Shaq how his a** tastes.) Hopefully this doesnt result in Kobe dropping 50 to prove a point. November 28th. We will see Shawn Marion, on the HEAT for the first time. This game is at US Airways and im anxious to see the reaction the fans give him. December 15th. Mike Dantoni and the Knicks make their first trip to the VALLEY. CHRISTMAS DAY. Which features 5 GAMES! Spurs at Suns, Hornets at Magic, Celtics at Lakers, Washington at Cavs, and the nightcap Dallas at Portland. Of course there are the other great season match-ups. The new look Rockets with Ron, Dallas, the Jazz, Detriot and the Celtics will also be fun matches to look forward to. Having been through the draft, the Olympics, Summer League, endless talk about the newcomers, and having chatted about most every other player on the roster it's time to revisit one of the semi-forgotten guys in the mix:  Sergio Rodriguez. I'm going to be as candid here as I've been on the podcast and radio when this has come up.  It doesn't feel like the winds are blowing in a great direction for Sergio right now.  Last season was obviously shaky for him.  His confidence may or may not have taken a hit.  The weaknesses in his game may or may not have been exposed.  It's hard to say exactly what went on there, or if it was a combination of things.  We just know it didn't work.  He wasn't selected for Spain's Olympic team this summer.  He didn't participate in Summer League.  With Jerryd Bayless bringing a Jack-like scoring game without as many of Jarrett's weaknesses, Sergio could get stuck in the role of third point guard again.  That isn't exactly a blueprint for a fast-ascending career. On the other hand none of the above data is anywhere near conclusive.  It looks shaky for him, but circumstantially so.  Players are entitled to have a rough sophomore season.  That has happened to plenty of guys and some have rebounded to have nice careers.  If you step back and analyze the Sergio-meter so far (at least according to the fans) you'd say he had minimal expectations coming into the league and exceeded them with his flashes of bril ...

We've talked a few times about the Blazers increasing their ability to run next year with Greg Oden in the middle anchoring the defense and rebounding.  Fast break points have been few and far between the last few years because we have not been able to simultaneously shut teams down, rebound the ball, and get in front of them.  It's always been a choice between one or two of those things when all three are necessary to run an effective break.  Hopefully (knock on wood) this will not be an issue much longer and the heart of a good fast-breaking offense will be established. Another key element of the fast break is having people who can finish.  We're not hurting for those folks anymore either.  Brandon Roy can finish well...just as he does everything else well.  Rudy Fernandez and Jerryd Bayless will finish as well.  Travis Outlaw can put it through providing he catches the pass.  Lamarcus Aldridge and Channing Frye should be able to fill a wing.  Greg Oden will be a menacing trailer.  Even Martell Webster is becoming a force to be reckoned with, and not just because of his newfound desire to dunk with authority.  He's more than capable of drifting to the three-point line and putting one home.  That's a whole lot of people to worry about. In between the rebound and the finish, however, come the facilitators.  This is the gray area for the Blazers right now.  Immediately people will say, "Brandon Roy could key the break!"  Indeed he ...

It may be the middle of August, but on behalf of the Blazer's Edge community I have an important announcement to make with regards to the exciting 2008-2009 season. Many believed that with the departure of Jarret Jack and the apparent relegation of Sergio Rodriguez to Rudy's Translator, the great Sergio/Jack Controversy died out with a whimper. However, it appears that it didn't take long for the Playing Time Controversy of the Year to take shape! Yes, that's right folks, we have a new Sergio/Jack conundrum!  Ladies and gentlemen, Let the New Debate Begin!  Who will serve as the main guard next to Brandon Roy in the Fourth Quarter? In one corner, we have Jerryd Bayless, the mercurial one-and-done Wildcat, a six-foot-three (with shoes) combo guard taken with the 11th pick in this year's draft.  He took home the Vegas Summer League MVP Trophy after a very impressive showing against less-than-impressive competition.  Bayless scores a lot of points, plays solid defense and has a good handle despite a much-discussed short wingspan. In the other corner, we have Rudy Fernandez, the star of Spain's ACB league last year, whose arrival has been anticipated by Blazer faithful ever since we drafted him last year with the 20th pick in the 2007 NBA Draft.  Rudy is currently playing the 6th man sparkplug role on the very talented Spanish National Team.  He has a sweet stroke and a knack for highlight-reel theatrics with an open lane.  Not known ...
