Filed under: Giants , NFC East Championships usually tend to give people trophy goggles -- the romanticized sense that a player is better than in reality. Kevin Boss , in particular, was a pleasant surprise for the late-season Giants. During the stretch leading them to Lombardi, almost everything went well for him. But that's the thing: everything went well for the Giants, period. You can't use that sample size to project the future, because that sample size was probably an anomaly. An exaggeration, at the least. Which is why I winced when the Giants hitched their apple wagon to Boss' star, shipping Jeremy Shockey off. And though I guess it's true that they had to dump Shockey no matter what, it seems a bit dubious of the team and its fans to expect Boss to live up to the myth that has built around him. So it's not surprising, to me, to hear offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride pepper his enthusiasm with a ton of caution in discussing the position . You would never expect Gilbride to flat-out criticize the group, but he makes it clear that they have a lot of improving to do, noting that they don't have one guy who can "do it all." Of course, they had one of those guys. And they decided that it was best for the team to go with Boss. Which is fine, morale plays a large part in team success, and Boss helps it. If you're expecting him to be an elite tight end this season on top of that, well, you're probably setting yourself up for a ...

NEW ORLEANS, LA — SSNN has learned that pretty much every stripper in New Orleans wants to get nailed by Jeremy Shockey pretty bad right now. “I gotta be honest, I really want to get nailed by Jeremy Shockey,” said Kristin “Veronique” Davis, 20, of Metairie, LA, who dances at the Hustler Barely Legal club on [...] ...

Filed under: Saints , NFC South Saints fans were finally going to get their first glimpse of Jeremy Shockey in black-and-gold game action. Sean Payton even went as far as to say everyone would like what they saw of Shockey. What we wound up seeing was more of the usual -- Shockey on the sidelines in street clothes -- as Payton decided to keep him out after all. But the coach insists that Shockey hasn't suffered any setbacks, simply that it was a last-minute decision change and simply a precautionary measure. And he insists that Shockey will get some time in the team's final preseason game on Thursday. If Shockey misses Thursday, or clearly looks rusty, it wouldn't surprise me to have Payton give the season-opening spot to Mark Campbell , and work Shockey in over the first couple of games. What was a welcome sight on the field, however, was the reemergence of the defense, which rebounded after a disaster against the Texans. Even though the Bengals were missing Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh , the Saints did a great job of shutting down the Bengals' attack. Most pleasing is that Mike McKenzie , making his first appearance of the preseason, played great and dissuaded worries about his recovery from a torn ACL. If the team is to seriously push for a playoff spot this year, they'll need Shockey to eventually show up, and the defense to keep it up.   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

Filed under: Giants , NFC East I fully expected the New York media, after months of lambasting Jeremy Shockey all the way out of town, to embrace the embattled tight end at some point after he departed. I just didn't expect it to happen a few weeks after the Giants traded him to the Saints. But here we are, one game into the preseason schedule, and their are already concerns about the tight end position. Maybe that's a stretch -- I wouldn't say the media are "embracing" Shockey, but there's no mistake that the Giants miss his veteran presence (sans all the ranting and raving, of course). There were missed assignments, missed blocks, miscommunications, incorrect routes and a slew of other mental errors. For most of the last six years, with Shockey on his side, those were things [tight ends coach Mike] Pope didn't have to worry about. Now he does. "My biggest mistake as a coach is I make assumptions that these guys might know or have been through some of these experiences and that happened a little bit (in the preseason opener)," Pope said. ... "Primarily, in theory, we're basically starting over at this position." If it's any consolation, Shockey's not doing much blocking for the Saints, either; he sat out last weekend's game with hammy issues. And to be fair, I don't think any of this a revelation to the Giants coaching staff. They had to have an idea that they were losing something at the position when they sent their Pro Bowler ...

New Orleans Saints TE Jeremy Shockey ran plays with the first team offense Monday and appears ready to suit up for his first action since being traded to New Orleans by the New York Giants when the Saints play their third preseason game this Saturday. "Today was certainly more (action) than he's gotten and the plan is to get him in Saturday," HC Sean Payton said. "He's getting a lot better. The Jeremy Shockey trade made me notice something about the New Orleans Saints' offense. They are beginning to look a lot like the Dallas Cowboys. Intentional or not, there appears to be more of a parallel going on than the similar latitude for Dallas and New Orleans. We all know that Sean Payton has a history with the Cowboys' offense. He ran the thing, right? Now, I'm not talking about the X's and O's being the same. I'm talking about the makeup of the talent in the skill positions. With the ... TE Jeremy Shockey of the New Orleans Saints : Shockey (leg) participated in practice on Tuesday, the first time during training camp that he has been a participant on back-to-back days, the Times-Picayune reports. Spin: Shockey did not seem hampered by injury during practice on Tuesday, though he did show a visible lack of endurance, which is to be expected given how limited he has been in training camp so far. Shockey is expected to continue to increase his practice load, and the team is hopeful that he will be able to take part in his first preseason game this Saturday. ...
