Jeremy Hermida knows he has had a disappointing year, but the former first-round pick hopes the Marlins haven't given up on him. ...

I don't know if you remember this but the last time the Marlins were in Philly, Jeremy Hermida hit one of those screaming foul ball line drives that has everyone ducking in the crowd.  Well, everyone  but a kid . Right fielder Jeremy Hermida hopes to make amends this week with 6-year-old Tyler Babel, the Philadelphia boy who sustained a broken left orbital bone when he was hit by Hermida's foul ball at Citizens Bank Park last month. Hermida plans to take the boy on a tour of the Marlins clubhouse and let him watch batting practice. He also will present him with a bat emblazoned with the boy's name. He said the tentative day is Wednesday. I can guarantee, broken face bone or not, the young Mr. Babel will end up being a Jeremy Hermida fan for life.  But that is one high price to pay to get a tour of the visitors' clubhouse.  ...

I just read on the Marlins' site that Jeremy Hermida is probably on the trading block.  Since we whiffed on Carlos Quentin last year, we're now in search of the next buy-low candidate (though in reality, Quentin never should have been a buy-low guy; his minor league numbers indicated major league awesomeness).  I wouldn't have bothered posting this bit about Hermida, there are dozens of trade targets, but not only do the Marlins publicly acknowledge he's on the block, he's just 24 years old (if my math is correct--by the way, what's with player profile pages just posting the player's birth date so we have to do that math?  I mean, can't they just post his age?  Isn't there a programmer out there who can put together a simple formula to have the guy's age flip over on his birthday?  Here, I'll give you baseball website managers a head start, the formula will look like this: [AGE] = today's date minus player's birth date.  Damn, I should program the new Space Shuttle).  And not only is he just 24 years old, with limited healthy major league service time, here are his minor league numbers: Minor League Batting Stats Year Team G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS OBP SLG AVG                                         2002 R-Marlins 38 134 15 30 7 3 0 14 15 25 5 0 .316 .321 .224                                         2002 A-Jamestown 13 47 8 15 2 1 0 7 7 10 1 3 .407 .404 .319                                         2003 AAA-Albuquerque 1 3 ...

Don’t be surprised if the Marlins attempt to trade Jeremy Hermida over the winter. He has been injury prone until this season so the Marlins wanted to see what he could do with a full season of at bats. Well he got them this season and he proved to be a subpar player [...] ...

Jerry Hairston Jr. went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored as the Cincinnati Reds put a serious damper in Florida's slim playoff hopes with a 7-5 win over the Marlins in a makeup game at Great American Ball Park. The loss is devastating to Florida as the team now sits 5 1/2 games back of the New York Mets for the NL wild card and essentially has to win out its last six games to have any hope of making the postseason. New York plays Chicago later on Monday. Joey Votto went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, two runs scored and two driven in while Andy Phillips added a pinch-hit two-run single for the Reds, who have won three of their last four. Aaron Harang (6-16) won his second straight start as he gave up four runs on eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts in seven innings of work. Jeremy Hermida and Josh Willingham each hit a solo home run for the Marlins, who have dropped three straight after a franchise-high nine-game winning streak. Ricky Nolasco went six-plus innings and gave up three runs on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Andrew Miller (6-10) was charged with the loss. This was a makeup of a game that was rained out on May 15. ...

It has been over a month since the Florida Marlins won back-to-back games. It's been over five years since they posted consecutive wins over the St. Louis Cardinals. The Marlins start up a three-game set with the playoff-hopeful Cardinals tonight at Busch Stadium. Florida hasn't won consecutive games since July 30-31, going 11-17 in August. The Marlins get their third chance in six games to post back-to-back victories, as they have won three of five after defeating Atlanta, 5-3, on Wednesday. Cody Ross' run-scoring single in the seventh inning was the difference, while Jeremy Hermida had two hits and an RBI and Hanley Ramirez homered for Florida. Ramirez's long ball was his 29th of the year and first since August 23, a span of nine games between homers. Florida's poor play in August has put a big damper on its playoff chances, as the club finds itself eight games back of the National League East-leading New York Mets with 22 games left to play. ...

Josh Willingham drove in the go-ahead run to help the Florida Marlins rally past the Washington Nationals 8-7 on Sunday. Trailing 6-1, Florida scored seven runs off four Washington relievers in the eighth to go ahead 8-6. Jorge Cantu started the rally with a two-run double to it 6-3. Dan Uggla brought the Marlins to within one with a two-run single. Alfredo Amezaga's bunt off Joel Hanrahan scored Uggla to tie the game at 6. Pinch-runner Jeremy Hermida, who had advanced to third on Hanrahan's throwing error, scored on Willingham's single to left. The Marlins added another run when Amezaga scored on an error on a grounder by John Baker. A double play stopped the rally. The umpires ruled Willingham left third base early when Ryan Langerhans caught Cantu's pop up and Willingham was out at third. ...

Cody Ross' run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh inning proved to be the difference as Florida downed Atlanta, 5-3, in the rubber match of a three-game set at Dolphin Stadium. Hanley Ramirez homered for the Marlins, who have won three of their past five games. Jeremy Hermida finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. "We're trying to win every single game we go out there," Ross said. "It just so happens that the other team we're playing, for some reason, comes back and beats us after we win. We just have to be consistent and put together a run." Chris Volstad, Florida's first pick (16th overall) in the 2005 draft, surrendered three runs on six hits and five walks in six innings. Doug Waechter (4-2) earned the win with a scoreless seventh inning. Kelly Johnson was 2-for-3 with a two-run triple for the struggling Braves, who have lost 18 of their last 23 games. ...

Of course we fans like to speculate on who the front office will be looking at for middle infield help as the main goal this off season; and find an "impact bat" to help Pujols.  Instead of listing off all of the players we would like to see in the Lou next season, lets go a different route.  Lets take a look at teams who are most likely to have a fire sale this off season. The most logical teams are the Mariners, Padres, and yes the Marlins. Lets just get the Marlins out of the way first.  Of course we all salivate at getting a bat like Dan Uggla's.  Sadly, he is not likely to be traded.  It seems the Marlins would like to improve their infield defense and move Cantu to first.  This opens up third for Uggla to shift over to, the position he played the most time at in the minors.  The other players likely to be traded are Jeremy Hermida and Kevin Gregg.  Knowing the Marlins, if we want a player, we will drastically overpay. Padres...oh, the good ol' Friars.   Obviously they wont be trading players such as Adrian Gonzalez, Peavy, or Young...but they could potentially have holes in their outfield and have some middle infield players to spare.  Depending on what their front office decides, a Khalil Greene could become expendable.  Not a great fit, but defenitely a possibility. Now to the team that really grabs my attention: The Seatle Mariners.  The M's have globs of players that could be available: Jose Lopez, Yunieski Betancourt, ...

Without a doubt Jeremy Hermida wants to play, but since he isn't, he is saying all  the right things . Right fielder Jeremy Hermida was not in the starting lineup for the fourth consecutive game. "We're trying to win games," Hermida said. "That's the most important thing, to keep ourselves in the playoff race and if that takes me coming off the bench some, me starting some, whatever it takes. I'm all for it. Anything I can do to help." Hermida was 2-for-2 as a pinch hitter in the four-game span. From August 11 to the present, in games where he has made at least three PA, he has a total of two hits, with one being for a home run.  He has a total of four hits over the same period when the pinch hits are added in. Granted, it is impossible to get out of a slump sitting on the bench.  But Hermida is proving to be a very good pinch hitter.  Which is a bit of a surprise to me given how long his swing is. If he keeps this up, he may finish the season as a pinch hitter, and if he does, okay.  But whether he does or doesn't I don't think the club is ready to give up on him just yet. But whatever happens for the rest of the season, Hermida knows the right things to say.  And who knows, he may even believe them.  But I can guarantee this: he wants to start.  And I suspect, he will get the chance again, whether it is this year or not, I can't say. ...

Back on August 14th, I posted an article telling you about the trade decision I made in my UBA NL-only keeper leagues. At the time I was in 2nd place in the league (Eric and a few commenters on this site are owners in this league). My decision was to trade for a $50 Manny Ramirez and $1 Ryan Spilborghs in exchange for a $15 Jeremy Hermida, and roll the dice with my closers Jonathon Broxton and Salomon Torres. My thought was that, instead of trading for a 3rd closer-Francisco Cordero, I already had a possible 3rd closer on my roster-either Adam Wainwright or Manny Corpas. I was rolling the dice on one of them becoming a closer. At the time of the deal, Wainwright was rumored to return from the DL as the Cardinals closer. Then he was rumored to come back as a starter. Then as closer again. Ultimately, he came back as a starter. Corpas was the heir apparent as the Rockies closer should Brian Fuentes get traded. The Rockies were playing terrible at the time, so a Fuentes trade looked likely. Then a funny thing happened. They started winning...and winning....and winning. By the 8/31 trade deadline, the Rockies were still in the wildcard race. Some thought they could overtake the Dodgers and Diamondbacks, who at the time were not playing well. So Fuentes was not dealt. And Corpas did not get any chance to close. Before the deal I was in 2nd place 4.5 points out of first place. As a result of the deal I made, I ended up in a tie for 2nd ...
