Santosh Sivan's English-language debut, backed by Merchant Ivory, looks back on India's inchoate steps towards independence in the late 1930s. An ambitious young man, T K Neelan (Rahul Bose) finds himself torn between loyalties old and new after his British boss (Linus Roache) is revealed to be having an affair with a local girl (Nandita Das). The fateful gift of a revolver will come back to haunt both men. Jennifer Ehle makes a welcome appearance as Roache's deceived wife, though acting honours go to Bose, his face an eloquently shifting register of shame, calculation and sympathy. ... Written by Kate(noreply@blogger.com) In truth this looks like a fairly solid effort, showcasing the acting talent that Norton has (especially in his smaller fare) and a possible second wind for Farrell’s career. It could be a very good film and an attempt at a relatively early awards contender. Original story at Jennifer Ehle . First of all, a belated happy birthday to Rosemary Harris , who turned 81 years young yesterday. We wish her all the best. Yesterday was also Day 1 of the ten-day Jane Austen Festival in Bath, UK. Some of the 29 events have sold out, but if you fancy promenades, soirees and putting on a bonnet, it is definitely the place to go. If you can't make this year though, despair not - the dates for next year have already been finalised. On the review table today... Michael H. Kleinschrodt of The Times-Picayune liked Rains , but would like to have seen even more of it: [...] Before the Rains features elegant visual details, but the story seems rushed in a film that stretches just past the 90-minute mark. More time for character development would have been welcome. Still, the story is compelling and the performances are moving. [...] The Winston-Salem Journal (providing a nice still, left) are justifiably proud of their 'native' in their brief summing up of Rains , while the DVD release has prompted a few more thoughts from the public: The only Blockbuster to comment thus far said the following... [...] Was a great movie! Kept you on the edge of your seat the whole time. Highly recommended! [...] There is also a barrage of niceties from Amazonian number 3: [...] It's exquisite to look at, while actually boasting a plot that moves right along, and stars some gorgeous people giving us a passionate, moving story of a mature interracial love affair. ... ... Source: criminalmindstvtidbits.blogspot.com --- 46 days ago

The Pride and the Glory Good news, everyone. A fab new trailer for Pride and Glory was released a couple of days ago. On the downside, it includes even less footage of Jennifer Ehle than the first one! Still, the movie looks very exciting. Both Trailer 1 and Trailer 2 can be seen at youtube. In response, Filmstalker has posted some musings and speculations about the upcoming film and hopes that the trailer does not turn out to be one huge spoiler, but rather, "just the beginning of the thriller." (Perhaps Ms Ehle is the movie's secret weapon?) Out and About The Irish Independent reports that Jennifer Ehle was among the elite guests invited to attend one of director Richard Colgan's "post-show soirees" at the Lincoln Center Festival in July: Move over P Diddy . Irish impresario Michael Colgan is being credited with reinventing the ritual of the "after-party" during the Gate Theatre's critically acclaimed Beckett Season at the prestigious Lincoln Center festival. Instead of hosting one big bash to celebrate the sold-out performances of acting A-listers Julianne Moore , Cynthia Nixon , Ralph Fiennes and his Schlinder's List co-star Liam Neeson , Colgan treated the countless celebs who flocked to see his work to a series of post-show soirees -- held backstage in the fuss-free dressing rooms of the various stars. Those who made the cut for 'Colgan's List' --including Lauren Bacall , Laura Linney , Kevin Kline , Susan Sarandon , Meryl Streep , ... Source: universitybookstore.blogspot.com --- 71 days ago
I'm not normally the sort of reader who imagines actors when I read a new book, but a comment from another fan of Guernsey got me thinking about my dream cast: The book is told primarily from the point of view of Juliet Ashton, a reporter for the Spectator during WWII, and now a writer in search of a meaningful subject for her next book. My vote for Juliet is the lovely and talented Emily Blunt. Another staffer recommended Rosamund Pike. Juliet's close relationship with her publisher Sidney forms the basis of much of the book. Sidney is an imposing man with a wry sense of humor. Guernsey co-author Annie Barrows shared with me that in her mind, Sidney is a tall man. I vote for Nathaniel Parker, known to many from the Inspector Lynley series on PBS. Sidney's sister Sophie is Juliet's closest friend. She and Juliet have known each other since boarding school and Sophie is Juliet's touchstone. Jennifer Ehle would be perfect! Juliet is wooed by a rich American publisher who appreciates her intellectual attributes as much as her physical ones. He's a little cocky, and very, very self-assured. Dermot Mulroney fits the bill perfectly. Emily Blunt as Juliet * Nathaniel Parker as Sidney *Jennifer Ehle as Sophie * Dermot Mulroney as Markham Reynolds Juliet receives a letter from Guernsey that launches her friendship with the literary society there. She begins to communicate with various members of the society: Amelia, the matriarch of the group; E ... Source: jenniferehle.blogspot.com --- 66 days ago
Rosemary Harris Details have now been released about Courteney Cox's aforementioned directorial project starring Rosemary Harris. The short drama is entitled The Monday Before Thanksgiving , and according to IMDb will be released on October 15, 2008 in Los Angeles! Ms Harris plays Lillian Cotlo and stars alongside Laura Dern and Ms Cox herself. We will let you know when a synopsis emerges. (NB: We are also awaiting news about the previously mentioned The Yankee King , thought to have been filmed in Ireland last month). Jennifer Ehle On the rainy front, Thaindian News have hailed Before the Rains as 'a hit in Britain'. Indeed, in the wake of the British release, the film is being discussed all over the place, not least of all on the good old wireless: At BBC Radio 5 Live , Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo evaluated the film as part of their regular cinematic round-up. Their discussion can be downloaded (scroll down to 'latest episode', and relevant chatter starts 39 minutes in). They also play a new audio clip. Alternatively, here is my paltry transcription: [...] It's a solid piece of work...very beautiful to look at...very well shot. I think what it benefits mostly from is Linus Roache's central performance... he does guilty and conflicted like almost no other British actor...and that's what this central role requires of him. [It has] a good, solid, ensemble cast, a simple story, [it is] well-told [and] nicely paired down. ... [...] The only ... Source: jenniferehle.blogspot.com --- 66 days ago
Before the Rains officially opened in the UK on Friday, and unsurprisingly, a new flock of reviews has just flown in. The Independent gives the film three out of five stars and says: [...] Jennifer Ehle makes a welcome appearance as Roache's deceived wife, though acting honours go to Bose, his face an eloquently shifting register of shame, calculation and sympathy. Although Tim Robey of The Telegraph didn't exactly love the movie, he was astute enough to make the following observation: [...] There's more than a glint of Forster or Maugham in the affair between the British imperialist Henry Moores (a solid Linus Roache) and his housemaid Sajani (Nandita Das), which reaches a tragic impasse when his wife (Jennifer Ehle, sterling as usual) returns from England. [...] In the same vein, Matthew Turner of View London says: [...] Henry's bliss is short-lived, first because his wife Laura (Jennifer Ehle, lovely as ever) arrives from England with their young son in tow [...] He later adds: [...] The performances are good too, particularly the central trio of Roache, Bose and Das, although Ehle is rather wasted as Laura. [...] While the review at Empire does not mention the welcome-ness, sterling-ness, or loveliness of any of the cast members in particular, it does applaud the leading players in general: [...] Still, if the characters sometimes feel roughly drawn and over-pitched, the casting, particularly of the leads (Jennifer Ehle also stars), ... Only 2 days left to see this film. Rated: Parental Guidance (Mature Theme) Runs: 98 minutes Director: Santosh Sivan Country: India/UK/US Released: 2007 Starring: Linus Roache, Rahul Bose, Nandita Das, Jennifer Ehle I applaud Before the Rains, a lovely, lyrical film with perfect timing that is a welcome relief from BlackBerrys, iPods, gas taxes, the failing economy and the boredom of cutthroat election campaigns. Directed by the distinguished Indian director-cinematographer Santosh Sivan, and set in southern India in 1937, it tells the exotic tale of a foreigner torn between two worlds... Henry Moores is an English businessman-adventurer with a dream of building a spice plantation in Kerala. But his plans first require a new road to be cleared through the hills and jungles... and he needs the money and manpower to do it. To secure the aid of the local villagers, he depends on his trusted right-hand assistant, a native named T.K. To serve his baser needs, he depends on his housekeeper, Sajani, a mercurial and intelligent girl who also becomes his lover. A journey together to collect honey in the forest turns into a sexually charged encounter witnessed by two local boys, who waste no time in spreading news of the affair to Sajanis village... How long can power and privilege protect a foreigner when sin becomes a tribal matter? A sweeping film filled with lush scenery and breath-tightening suspense, Before the Rains has the look of a fine ... Find more results for Jennifer Ehle on RSSMicro.com |
