Another team in the list. Another franchise to beat. Ladies and Gentlemen, the Oklahoma City Thunder . Formerly known as the Seattle Supersonics, the Oklahoma City Thunder did not come as a surprise to NBA fans. Six weeks before the official announcement, news has already leaked out regarding the team, including its logo and colors. Sadly, the Green and Yellow of the former Supersonics mark is non-existent. NBA aficionados (most, if not all) find the Thunder log sucks. In some angles, yep, the OKC Thunder logo does suck. Brandishing an Orange-Blue-White scheme, the OKC Thunder logo is based on the Oklahoma flag. Perhaps the people in Thunder’s creative department are just die-hard Oklahoma-loyalists? What’s wrong with that? Well, it could have been okay, until fellow Oklahomans (and a huge lot of them) professed their hatred for the new logo. It’s just un-NBA-ish. But enough with the logo, here’s the official roster of the Oklahoma City Thunder for the NBA 2008-09 Season: Nick Collison 6’9 PF Ronald Dupree 6’7 SF Kevin Durant 6’9 SF Mickael Gelable 6’7 SG Jeff Green 6’9 PF Devon Hardin 6’11 C Serge Ibaka 6’11 C Desmond Mason 6’5 SF Johan Petro 7’0 C Mouhamed Sene 6’11 C Joe Smith 6’10 PF Robert Swift 7’0 C Earl Watson 6’1 PG Kyle Weaver 6’6 SG Russell Westbrook 6’3 SG D.J. White 6’9 PF Damien Wilkins 6’6 SG   Nine players from the roster are 22 and below, with an average pay of $3 million dollars each. I’d say the OKC Thunder will be f ...

The Cleveland Indians signed free agent pitcher Jeff Weaver to a minor league contract on Saturday, giving the veteran a shot at making his sixth big-league team. ANAHIEM - John Lackey, Ervin Santana and Joe Saunders will pitch the first three games of the AL Division Series in that order starting Wednesday, Angels manager Mike Scioscia announced after Sunday's 7-0 win over the Texas Rangers. The Angels finished the season with their 100th win behind an encouraging performance by lefthander Joe Saunders, who went six innings and allowed two hits. Scisocia said he elected to go with 10 pitchers and 15 positional players for the first round against the Sox. The most notable player left off was veteran reliever Justin Speier. He was left off in favor of rookie Kevin Jepsen, the hard-throwing former USA Olympian. Here's the roster: Pitchers (10): John Lackey, Ervin Santana, Joe Saunders, Jon Garland, Jered Weaver, Francisco Rodriguez, Scot Shields, Darren Oliver, Jose Arredondo, Kevin Jepsen. Positional players (15): Erick Aybar, Brandon Wood, Jeff Mathis, Chone Figgins, Garret Anderson, Kendry Morales, Juan Rivera, Gary Mathews Jr., Mark Teixeira, Vladimir Guerrero, Robb Quinlan, Mike Napoli, Howie Kendrick, Torii Hunter, Reggie Willits. ...

Call me Rip Van Squawker. After being sick and snoozing for nearly a week, I finally felt semi-decent today. Unfortunately, I felt ill all over again while watching the Cubs (and Mets) while the Yankees-Red Sox game was delayed - and then rained out. I don’t know what was worse - seeing Johan Santana step up and be the ace for the Mets, or watching former Yankee Ted Lilly was pitching no-hit ball through six innings for the Cubs. To think of what the Yanks could have done with either of these pitchers made me sick. And if the Yanks had gotten to play, they would have faced Daisuke Matsuzaka, who has gone 18-2 this year. But hey, if the Yanks had gotten to play yesterday, we would have at least have Sidney Ponson pitching for the Bombers. What does it say about Ian Kennedy’s standing - or lack thereof - on this team that the Yanks are still throwing out Ponson instead of him? I wonder if the Steinbrenner family, who for some inexplicable reason still seems to think Brian Cashman is worth keeping as Yankee GM, noticed all that yesterday. Cashman didn’t bid enough to get into the Dice-K sweepstakes, and he turned down getting Santana in favor of going with the kids. And he not only traded the lefthanded Lilly to get Jeff Weaver, he never even made an offer to bring him back in pinstripes, even though the pitcher desperately wanted to be a Yankee again. Who did he sign instead two years ago? Kei Igawa. As Steve Lombardi of WasWatchin ...

Step aside Morgan Ensberg , we have a new underachiever in town. Typically, I would be excited to hear that the Indians signed a former first-round draft choice. However, with the recent news, I can't help but be less than thrilled... The Cleveland Indians today signed RHP Jeff Weaver to a free agent minor league contract. He will report to AAA Buffalo. Who's next? Kris Benson ? Can I get a R.A. Dickey? For a team that had their wallet padlocked in the off-season, they sure are tossing out all sorts of coin at guys who are likely posting classified ads on Craigslist. Yes, it is the same Weaver that won 14 games back in 2005, and actually helped a team in 2006 when he won three postseason games with the St. Louis Cardinals. But it's also the same Weaver that has a career record under .500 (93-114) and had an ERA of 6.20 last season. Couple that with him being cut by the Brewers after pitching simply awful baseball (5 innings, 64 hits, nine home runs) for their Triple-A affiliate, and this reeks of a move that is just filling recently vacated roster spots (Slocum, Lewis). Fun fact: Weaver was selected six spots ahead of C.C. Sabathia back in 1998. Oddly enough, it was six years ago today that Jeff Weaver was traded to the Yankees for Ted Lilly in the deal that netted the Tigers Jeremy Bonderman , and would eventually land Carlos Pena in Tampa Bay (via Oakland et al). Something tells me that the Yankees wouldn't mind getting that one ...

A day after Los Angeles became the first team to secure a playoff spot, Francisco Rodriguez tied the MLB single-season record for saves as the Angels downed the Seattle Mariners, 7-4, in the first of four meetings at Angel Stadium. Rodriguez earned his 57th save to equal the mark set by Bobby Thigpen in 1990 while a member of the Chicago White Sox. "Credit to the guys who make the plays behind me," Rodriguez said. "I'd be selfish if I said I did this by myself. I thought I could get to the record a couple of weeks ago. I feel like all of my work is paying off." Jered Weaver (11-10) tossed six scoreless innings, scattering three hits, to get the win. He was making his first appearance since August 30 due to lacerations on the middle and ring fingertips of his right hand. The injury occurred when his fingers were cut by staples on the underside of the dugout bench at Comerica Park in Detroit back on September 2. Garret Anderson had two hits and knocked in three runs for the Angels, who have won four of their last five games. Jeff Mathis had two RBI and scored a run. ...

by Andrew Johnson Filed under: Dodgers , MLB Playoffs In the Playoff Pulse series, our MLB editor takes on a hot October topic. These aren't your daddy's Dodgers, you know the franchise that had one playoff win in the last 20 years. Heck, these Dodgers barely resemble the team that was lagging behind the Diamondbacks and below the .500 mark in the NL West three months ago. The Cubs found that out the hard way in the NLDS, and the Phillies (or Brewers) could be in for a similarly rude awakening in the next round. Los Angeles won 84 games this season -- the fewest of any postseason team. It's worth noting that the last playoff team to win so few games -- the 83-78 2006 Cardinals -- went on to the World Series. But that team had Jeff Weaver and Anthony Reyes in the rotation and hit an extraordinary hot streak at the right time. This Dodgers team does not need to go on a fluke hot streak to win it all. It is much better than its 84 wins would suggest. It will be all too easy to point to the Manny Ramirez trade as the key turning point in Los Angeles' season. His impact is undeniable. He hit close to .400 over the final two months of the regular season and he had two home runs in the three-game sweep. But Ramirez is only part of a radical in-season makeover that has turned the Dodgers from an expensive flop into an NLCS team.   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

For the first time, I actually have hope in October, and I like it. Tonight we send our ace against Carlos Zambrano who is getting by on name recognition at this point. His peripheral stats are like Jeff Weaver's in 2004, just with less control, would you be scared about facing Jeff Weaver? While his no hitter in early September got a ton of publicity, it hid the fact that over the last two months, the guy had two good starts, leading to a 7.28 ERA since August. Despite what the mainstream impression is, the Dodgers have a huge advantage on the mound tonight. We are the favorites in a game that could ...

A Stow man who claims he killed a Framingham man in self defense in June faces life in prison after a grand jury charged him Aug. 28 with first- degree murder. Kevin J. Porter, 26, was also charged by a Middlesex grand jury with assault and battery with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury and assault and battery. Porter, of 1 Warren Road, is charged with killing Jeff Weaver, 38, of 38 Gordon St., on June 24. Authorities claim Porter and Weaver fought, and Porter stabbed him several times around 11:54 a.m. Weaver was taken to MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham where he was pronounced dead. Prosecutor Marian Ryan said at Porter's June 25 Framingham District Court arraignment that the two men fought June 24, but it apparently stopped. However, she said Porter grabbed a knife and murdered Weaver in front of his wife and 15-year-old daughter. That night, police stopped a car driven by Porter's girlfriend in Stow and Porter was found in the trunk of the car with extra clothing, suggesting he was "obviously fleeing," Ryan said. But, Porter, through his lawyer, John Tardiff, said he and Weaver were longtime friends. Porter had consoled Weaver on June 23 because Weaver thought the Department of Social Services planned on taking his children. On the day of the murder, Porter and his girlfriend, along with their two children, went to Weaver's home, where Weaver attacked Porter with a baseball bat, a rock and a chair, police said ...

I don't know if this has been posted anywhere (I haven't found anything yet), but this was the postseason roster that was announced on AM 830 after Sunday's game. Pitchers: John Lackey, Ervin Santana, Joe Saunders, Jered Weaver, Jon Garland, Francisco Rodriguez, Scot Shields, Darren Oliver, Jose Arredondo and Kevin Jepsen. Position Players: Outfield - Vlad Guerrero, Torii Hunter, Garret Anderson, Juan Rivera, Gary Matthews Jr. and Reggie Willits. Infield - Mark Teixeira, Howie Kendrick, Erick Aybar, Chone Figgins, Robb Quinlan, Kendry Morales and Brandon Wood Catchers - Mike Napoli and Jeff Mathis Analysis: Interesting picks of Jepsen and Wood (hence the BOLD)... I'm sure they were going back and forth between Jepsen and Speier, with Kevin taking the lead given his performance in the Olympics and AAA. Wood also caught me off guard... I'm sure management wanted a home run threat off the bench, just in case. Your thoughts? ...

Remember when, according to some , Carlos Silva was the best free agent pitcher available this winter? Remember when, upon missing out on Hiroki Kuroda , the Mariners panicked about their starting rotation, signing said Silva to a $48M, 4 year contract? Remember certain parties (e.g. me) saying that they hated the contract, but Silva was reasonably valuable and likely to improve the team, provided there was a reasonable defence behind him? Remember how I didn't have tRA for any year before 2007 at that point? Because holy crap was I wrong. In his years with Minnesota, Silva's lowest tRA (which is scaled against RA, not ERA, as I hope most of you remember) was 4.70, good for 61st in MLB among all qualified pitchers. That's a really fringey #2 pitcher. In his best year. In his worst year with the Twins, 2006, his tRA stood at a majestic 6.71. To put this in perspective, Jeff Weaver posted a 5.39 mark with us last year, while the giant pile of crap we traded Soriano for put up a tRA of 6.50. Silva's pRAA (pitching runs above average) that year? -31.9. ! Over the course of his career in the Metrodome, Silva was worth -22.6 runs compared to a league average pitcher. Good stuff. Please allow yourself to have another look at the title of this post and a little shudder of rage. But this can't all be about how bad he'd been before we signed him, because he's been plenty bad -after- we signed him too. 2008: 5.65 tRA, which is 84% of league ...
