The Instruments ' bandleader, Elephant 6 stalwart Heather McIntosh, plays both bass and cello-- in fact, she's signed on as the touring bassist (and occasional cellist) for high-concept nu-soul men Gnarls Barkley -- and it's her secondary instrument that gives "Ode to the Sea" its undulating ebb and flow. From McIntosh's Athens, Ga.-based band's new album, Dark Småland , the song settles into a modal, druidic folkie expanse, rippling back and forth beguilingly without ever breaking loose and flooding the land. (Sorry, global warming fans, guess they wrote this before McCain announced his brilliant summer gas tax holiday.) Not that McIntosh's bass playing isn't vital to the track, too, burbling beneath the glassy surface of repetitive guitars and jazzy drumming for a sound that's somewhere between Five Leaves Left and Astral Weeks . Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeff Mangum adds his clear, soft voice to McIntosh's higher, softer one. "Here is my ode to the sea," the two intone, more mantra than lyric, on a song where the message is in the music's tidal drift. MP3:> The Instruments [ft. Jeff Mangum]: "Ode to the Sea" [from Dark Småland ; due 05/13/08 from Orange Twin ] ...

2008 Week 16: Miami at Kansas City KC has some talent but they are inexperienced and have a paper thin offensive line. The game is on the road late in the season, so will the rookies finally have gotten the pro game down or will the rookie gems start to hit the wall? The AFC East rivals get a break if they play KC early in the year. Miami will have to beat an improving KC team late in the season. Less rookie jitters at their home stadium. Will Brodie Croyle last an entire season? By the way, if you think Miami’s secondary has issues, just compare Kansas City's secondary problems.I think that the superior O-Line of the Phins makes the difference. Who do you think wins? Media: CD - Centered around the varied & estimable talents of longtime ELEPHANT 6 collaborator HEATHER McIntosh. As dense & layered as this album gets, it is at its core an elegantly melancholic folk-pop record, carried by McIntosh's brooding cello. Indigenously Athenian-seeming in its broad scope of instrumentation, the record features contributions from a host of E6 stalwarts, including Jeff Magnum (NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL), Will Cullen Hart, John Fernandes & Peter Erchick (OLIVIA TREMOR CONTROL). ...

The Good: The Instruments - "Ode to the Sea"; It's not often that we get to post news from Jeff Mangum, so when we get the chance we're gonna take it. Right here is a track that has backing vocals from the Neutral Milk Hotel legend, but surprisingly it's not Mangum's presence that makes this such a hauntingly beautiful track. Instead it's the rest of the Instruments, namely Heather McIntosh, who ...

It's been an extremely busy week. I haven't had time to really post anything. Ella's soccer season ended last Saturday. She played her little heart out and we were so proud! Ella's soccer team...managing somehow to stay in one place for 2.5 minutes. Ella got a soccer trophy on Saturday and she was so excited! This week is CMA Fest in Nashville (formerly known as Fan Fair). It is a huge event. Our downtown practically shuts down as fans from all over the world gather to celebrate country music. I was at the convention center all day on Wednesday as the booth we designed for Big Machine Records went up. Artists on Big Machine include Taylor Swift, Jewel, and Trisha Yearwood . Justin McIntosh who is in marketing at Big Machine and I had a blast. Justin used to being our life group. It was so fun getting to hang out again. Here's a picture of the booth going up... This is Conway Twitty's booth (isn't he dead?). Alan Jackson's booth Here's our booth taking shape. I'll post some pics of the full booth later this week. Sheryl's nieces are here with 2 of their friends for CMA Fest. Justin got them tickets or a signing by Taylor Swift for Saturday. They are really excited! (THANKS, Justin!!) Yesterday I went to the Creative Artists' Agency open house and CMA Fest kick off party. It was fun to see Jeff Gregg (he was a groomsman in our wedding). I got to see lots of interesting people. At one point I noticed I was standing next to Jeff Fisher (coa ...

Kansas City, coming off a very disappointing season, finds their selves at a very odd spot in the first round that they’re not accustomed to: number five. With that first selection, it will be interesting to see what they do. The biggest areas of need that they have are widely considered to be the offensive line and secondary. Lets take a look at who they might get. On the offensive line side, I look at five possibilities: Jake Long, Jeff Otah, Branden Albert, Ryan Clady, and Chris Williams. Except for Albert, all are tackles. They need one badly, with Will Svitek on the right side and Damion McIntosh starting to age in his thirties. Long would obviously be the best one. However, most feel he’ll either be grabbed by the Dolphins or Rams before he makes it to pick number five, which he likely will. If Miami agrees to a contract with someone else and the Rams pick Glenn Dorsey or Chris Long, than there would be a good chance that Jake would slide to the fifth pick, where the Chiefs would gladly take him. However, again, don’t get your hopes up, fans. full story... ...

I imagine that most of you saw the May 9, 2008 edition of Ed Rosenberry’s CGGC eNews in which Ed described the privilege that he and Dave Green, Rick Mason, Kirk Schneemann and Bill Shoemaker and Bob Eatherton and Eric Starkey, Paul Sabelhaus, Jeff Rockey and Greg McIntosh had in attending the New Church Conference in Orlando on April 21-24. Encouraging. I was happy to read Ed’s supportive summary of the messages of Andy Stanley, Bob Roberts, Alan Hirsch and Tim Keller. And, I say a hail and hearty AMEN to everything our brothers heard during the Conference. But, I also point out that the remarks of the speakers at the Conference bear a striking resemblance to comments that are the norm on this blog. I’m glad that our brothers embraced what the Big Names in Missional Christianity are saying. Here’s to praying that they will embrace the missional people in their own church half as warmly as they do Andy, Bob, Alan and Tim. I am heartened by Ed’s last paragraph which begins, The three days challenged my thinking and proved very inspirational. The key now will be to translate the concepts back into our ministry setting in the Churches of God. Amen, Ed, Amen! However, I suspect that a process as subtle, gradual and gentle as translation will not do it. I don’t think there’s time for that. Here are some of my thoughts on translating those concepts into the CGGC: 1. Translating these concepts can only begin with an u ...
