David Van Couvering (Sun Microsystems) & I are presenting at JavaOne this year. The title and abstract are: TS-3154 Introduction to Apache Derby Apache Derby is a 100% Java™ technology-based open source database. It is an excellent fit for Java technology and web applications, because it is fully embeddable; requires zero administration; has a small footprint; and is secure, easy-to-install, and fully standards-compliant. This session gives you an overview of the qualities and features of Derby, discusses the different scenarios and topologies in which it can be used, and provides an in-depth overview of Derby's support for the JDBC™ API and SQL and how it integrates with an application or web server. There is also a Derby/Eclipse tutorial from John Graham of Sybase. TS-4259 Watching Apache Derby: Eclipse Tools for Administration and Monitoring The Eclipse Data Tools Platform (DTP) project provides open source frameworks and tools for data access, management, and development. Add in the application-hosting capabilities of the Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP), along with the open source database Apache Derby, and a compelling stack for rapidly developing data-centric applications emerges. This presentation uses this stack in a case study building basic administration and performance monitoring tools for Apache Derby. Assuming only a basic understanding of Eclipse plug-in development, the session begins by describing the requirements a ...

JavaOne 2008 I meant to follow up on my previous post on CommunityOne with a writeup on JavaOne right away. After all, JavaOne immediately followed CommunityOne in the calendar. In any case, here are my (long overdue) impressions on JavaOne. The opening keynote (on Tuesday, May 6th) featured Rich Green. He reiterated the focus of "Java+You" - where consumers are creating and consuming content through both wired and mobile devices. Java technology enables developers to create a wide range of rich, interactive applications. To this end, he invited Ian Freed, VP of Kindle at Amazon, to demonstrate this wireless reading device . Either the demo gods were not kind to Ian or Rich Green was not patient enough - his live demo of downloading a book on the device did not work! The highlight of the keynote was an appearance by Rock and Roll legend, Neil Young . He described his life-long desire to produce media that would allow him to share an interactive experience with his fans - complete with music, videos, photos and the web. He failed at every attempt because of the shortcomings of the solutions. Finally, the combination of Blu-ray and Java technologies allowed him to create a 10-disc collection that covers his first 10 years! Bob Brewin's keynote captured the latest advancements in Java EE, Java SE and Java FX. Roberto Chinnici led the discussion on Java EE. He rehashed Java EE 5 platform before turning his attention to Java EE 6 - which f ... Source: developers.sun.com --- 18 days ago

At this year's twelfth annual JavaOne conference, the Java Nation was healthy and vibrant. At a reported 15,000 participants, attendance was strong despite the weak economy, and the conference featured more flexible and simpler choices for enterprise Java development, along with a heavy emphasis on JavaFX as the basis for a new generation of consumer applications. Sun Microsystems also appears to have rejuvenated its innovative spirit as the ringleader of this nation; it has deepened its commitment to an open source strategy and is pushing Java's evolution harder than it has in recent years. ... I just discovered by accident that Json-lib was mentioned during JavaOne 2008 at BOF-5361 The Long Tail Treasure Trove (look for project #14 of 30). Considering that heavy hitters as ASM, CGLib, Selenium and XOM are also in the list, all I can say is wow! Thanks Brian and Gianugo! I would have been there if it wasn't because I had a BOF of my own at the same time slot. ... Source: www.jroller.com --- 47 days ago
" title="">Open Source Service-Oriented Architecture with Service Component Architecture and Apache Tuscany This is a component based programming model that abstracts away the complexity of the underlying components and leaves you to concentrate on the business logic. From my perspective, it's a clean way to reuse components and I plan to look into it more. The demo was flawless and explained how an online store was implemented also using json-RPC and then enhanced to include another catalog. It also uses RSS in a way outside the norm of pubsub to blogs in which use of components is monitored. That's cool - to think outside the box like that. The cool thing about a conference like JavaOne is the way you can stumble into entirely new approaches if you just let yourself be brave and explore. Before this presentation, I had never heard of Tuscany. My takeaway is that it‘s a doable way to implement an online store (among whatever else your imagination conjures up!), and not too hard. I like that. Of course, this was just an overview. I‘d like to see the component archive: what‘s there, how components are written, and what I might use when the opportunity arises. Kudos to presenters Mario Antollini, Intel; Jean-Sebastien Delfino, IBM . Stay Tuned! ... Source: www.jroller.com --- 42 days ago
I attended a talk about the future of Java SE. Point #1 (for me as an author) -- they expect to release Java SE 7 in the summer of 2009. The release will include several interesting features including Modules, Jar file improvements, strings in switch statements, closures (maybe), better support for scripting languages (such as Ruby, Python, etc.) and the catching of multiple exceptions. There's also a new approach to applets in which an applet can be dragged out of the browser window. Initially, the applet runs in the sandbox (even after the browser closes) but the user has the option of turning the applet into a full desktop app. Pretty cool! ... As Service-Oriented Architectures gain ground, it becomes obvious that their performance is the key to their success. I'm going to briefly write about two sessions that I attended in JavaOne 2008.
