... There's been a lot of chatter about Josh Childress packing his bags and moving to Greece after signing with the Euroleague. I really don't feel this is the end of the world, and there's a few players I'd like to see join him, including ... 1. Ron Artest , for obvious reasons. 2. Kwame Brown , who has amounted to pretty much nothing and doesn't really deserve a dime ... oh, wait, hmm, it seems he just signed an $8 million deal with Detroit (how much you wanna bet Pistons fans are PISSED). Perhaps team president of basketball operations Joe Dumars' brain will kick in soon and they can figure out a way to trick Brown into going to Europe. 3. Drew Gooden , preferbly to a city with a good barber. 4. Jason Kapono , who I absolutely refuse to believe is of any value to an NBA team. And I'm not just saying this because he looks ridiculous in a headband. 5. Stephon Marbury , who I believe would relish the opportunity to set a new precedent in professional basketball, by averaging -1 assists. If anyone can do it, it's him. 6. Ben Gordon . This is Ice-9's personal pick, who's so fed up with Gordon for not signing a $10 mil per year contract when "he's not even worth $7?!" Also he's a streaky shooter, which can screw over your fantasy team. And it looks like he's really considering moving! 7. Joel Pyrzbilla . Yeah, he's a good guy and yeah, he's finally healthy but two years ago I drafted him onto my fantasy team and he did nothing for me, which c ... Source: blogs.newsobserver.com --- 65 days ago
If the U.S. wins the gold medal in basketball, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James are brilliant. If the Americans lose, like they did in 2004, then it's Coach K's fault. That's how Caulton Tudor sees the predicament the Duke coach faces next month in Beijing. To a certain degree, Tudor's right. Any time the U.S. loses in the Olympics ( 1972, 1988, 2004) there's plenty of blame to go around with the coaches (John Thompson and Larry Brown) bearing the brunt of the two most recent failures. But if the U.S. loses this time — and that's a big if — team architect Jerry Colangelo should be first in line for the heat, not K. Colangelo, with the benefit of hindsight from the problems of 2004, picked the team. Unlike the previous versions, this team has a point guard, actually three of them, and has played together before the first pool game. That's a start. Eventually, the team will need to look more like a team, with demarcated positions and not just a collection of all-stars. You need shooters to win in the international game. Bryant and James might qualify as shooters from the shorter FIBA 3-point distance but that's not their strength. Michael Redd's the only designated marksman on the roster. Perhaps Dwyane Wade's ego should have been sacrificed for Rip Hamilton, Jason Kapono or, don't laugh, J.J. Redick. Colangelo, with obvious help from K, built the team to win with superior athleticism, which translates on the defensive end, and creating point ... Source: ballhype.com --- 29 days ago
Should a 29.7 % three-point shooting power forward take more shots from outside per game than Jose Calderon, Jameer Nelson, Richard Hamilton, Steve Novak, or Jason Kapono? The Toronto Raptors have filled out their roster, signing journeyman guard Will Solomon to a deal yesterday. Terms of the contract were not announced. Solomon was selected by the Vancouver Grizzlies with the 32nd pick in the 2001 NBA Draft. He played one season with the Grizzlies before heading overseas for stints in Greece (with Aris BC), Israel (Hapoel Jerusalem and Maccabi Tel Aviv) and Turkey (Efes Pilsen and Fenerbahce). The 30-year-old averaged 17.9 points and 3.9 assists with Fenerbahce the last two seasons. The 6-foot-1 Solomon can play both the point guard and shooting guard positions. He is expected to be the emergency option at point guard, should Roko Ukic prove unable to serve as Jose Calderon's backup. The Raptors now have 13 players under contract for next season. Aside from the guards, the Raptors will have Hassan Adams, Jamario Moon, Anthony Parker, Jason Kapono and Joey Graham at the swingman spots, with Chris Bosh, Jermaine O'Neal, Andrea Bargnani, Kris Humphries and Nathan Jawai up front. ...

The "Redeem Team" looked impressive on...whatever the hell day it was that they just played China (Friday, Tuesday, I have no idea), defeating China by 30 in what may have been the most watched sporting event in the history of the world. Team U.S.A. put on a show for the Chinese fans, who seemed to be cheering for the Americans as loudly as for their own countrymen. D-Wade has been the team's best scorer so far, while LeBron has been a versatile do-it-all type player. Plus, LBJ is just overwhelming athletically for the players he is up against. Kobe has so far been very accepting of his role as the primary defensive stopper (but he did go 1-7 downtown). Overall, though, they look very imposing. It should be noted that Spain, considered a gold-medal contender, looked good in dismantling Greece, but they didn't look unbeatable, especially for this U.S. squad. A few thoughts: I think the team would have been better served with an additional 3 pt. shooter on the roster. Redd has been a pretty good zone buster, but the rest of the team struggled. Ray Allen would have been great, but perhaps he wasn't interested. Even Jason Kapono would have been a great fit. I think one solution to this problem is to have Deron Williams spend some time at the 2 with Kidd or Paul at the one. Williams is solid from downtown. The problem this creates that Williams is probably the best zone penetrator of the bunch. I think the more obvious ... Source: www.boxxet.com --- 63 days ago

So now you've heard about the big eye-openers in Jerryd Bayless and my disagreement about Arron Afflalo . Here are the rest of my notes from Thursday, sprinkled in with some other tidbits I found... DETROIT/DALLAS Spotted: Paul Mokeski . Guy sitting next to me said he saw Floyd Mayweather . Nice to see Richie Frahm of Gonzaga working a little extra on his game (three-point shooting and dribble-pop). I can envision him stepping into a random gym and people wondering who is this tall white guy? Well, according to the program guide, it's at least his 4th year removed from Gonzaga and he will be 31 years old as of August 14th. I think this could be the end of the rope for Frahm. Btw, he looks more like 6'6" than 6'5". He's got a nice stroke from downtown, but it isn't automatic. He almost got called for an up-and-down (where you first intended to go up for a jumper then decided not to). He is the stereotypical stand-up face-the-basket type player, i.e., he's too slow to make an NBA roster and isn't lights out like Jason Kapono to make up for it. I wonder where he will end up. OK, I think we can officially call the Amir Johnson project a bust. He's too slow making his moves, can't relentlessly crash the glass, and doesn't really know where to go on the floor. He was drafted #56 out of high school in 2005. So what we have here is the culmination of 3 years of NBA experience. Not good. As I sprinkled before on previous posts, both teams' ... - After much protestation on my part, the Clippers finally waived Josh Powell , hours before his contract became guaranteed. They then use the resultant cap space to sign veteran forward Brian Skinner . Thus, waiving Powell WAS worth it after all. My same plaudits and criticisms of every other Clippers free agency move so far also apply here - good player, very good value, but again with the age? (Oh well. Signing good players for good value can never be a bad thing.) This move also impacts me on a personal level, as I had advocated Brian Skinner as a good signing for my incorrigible Chicago Bulls , because the idea of Aaron Gray and Drew Gooden as backup centres doesn't stir my loins. I tend to get right bummy and anal when what I deem to be a great addition falls by the wayside (See also: Devin Brown , Jason Kapono , Luther Head ), and so you might be hearing a lot more talk about Brian Skinner around these parts. Additionally, if Ben Gordon leaves as a free agent, my Salim Stoudamire campaign is going global. - Speaking of the Bulls, they actually did stuff. After overpaying to re-sign Luol Deng , the Bulls also then waived guard JamesOn Curry, leading to a round of "JamesOff The Team" jokes from people who should probably know better. Including me. Curry's salary was only $100,000, thus waiving him saved the Bulls $169,403 (Curry's $711,517 salary, minus the $100,000 amount of his guarantee, and the $442,114 cost of his rookie repla ...
