Japanese Company Gekkeikan Sake Co. Ltd. has devised a method which transforms cellulosic material into ethanol using merely microorganisms. The researchers implant cellulose-degrading enzymes into the Aspergilli species collectively called the koji mold. They also discovered a gene sequence called "promoter" which plays a role in the production of the enzyme inside the chromosomes. Koji mold with the cellulose-degrading enzyme is called the "super koji mold." Unlike in other cellulosic ethanol production methods which require the use of high-energy processes and expensive equipment, the super koji mold transforms the cellulose material directly to glucose which can then be fermented to create ethanol. The super koji mold had been successfully tested to break down cellulose from rice straws and chaff (seed coverings) into glucose. Read more about the super koji mold in Nikkei . ...
