Jump to the full entry & travel map Tokyo, Kanto, Japan Don't really know where to start with Tokyo. Spent the first few days walking round wondering what was going on. It's brilliant but it's so strange. We've done a lot of walking around and have seen a lot of the city so far, that's all we can do as it's so bloody expensive! We've walked round shinjuku, shibuya, ginza, shimbashi, asasuka which is where we're staying, and ueno (and probably more places i've forgot). Asasuka's quite cool as it's only 20 minutes on the rattler into town but it's much quieter (and cheaper) than the city which is just 100mph all the time. There's also quite a big temple here called senso-ji which we visited. I think it's one of the more well known temples in tokyo and it was right on our doorstep which was handy. Ueno's not far as well and that's quite a nice place, it had a nice park we walked round with lots of museums, street musicians, performers etc. which was fun. The city just seems mental though. Flashing lights are everywhere, it's freezing/raining/snowing so literally everyone here seems to be carrying umbrella's, all the girls under the age of 25 dress like brass, the guys dress really weirdly, they're well into fashion here, everyone over the age of 40 seems to be in the arcades playing pachinko, which for those of us not lucky enough to be able to afford to watch united in tokyo is a pinball-arcade type game with loads of ball-bearings an ...

Tokyo, Japan: Japan is at risk of undermining its own recent commitments on carbon emissions reductions during a confused – and confusing – debate on forthcoming climate legislation, WWF said today. WWF is calling on a high-level Cabinet Member Committee meeting regarding climate change on Thursday to stick with the already outlined absolute emissions reductions of 25 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020 agreed under the Copenhagen Accord framework, and with the ‘cap and trade’ scheme outlined as a key mechanism for achieving the target. The climate bill, to be presented to the full cabinet including Prime Minister Hatoyama on Friday, is being criticized by heavy industry labour unions for possible job loss while some government ministries are promoting a carbon intensity framework for emissions reductions. Intensity-based emissions trading schemes however seriously undermines the environmental integrity of the bill - absolute emissions would increase with production even if intensity-based targets are achieved. “If the bill includes "intensity-based" emissions trading schemes then it does not consider the emissions cap that the Japanese government has promised to the Japanese people during the elections and to the world following the Copenhagen Accord,” said Naoyuki Yamagishi, WWF-Japan's Head of Climate Change. “It should have “absolute-based" emissions trading, which is crucial for the scheme to be called “cap and trade” scheme.” Ja ...

Kyushu University and PicoCELA Inc ., both based in Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, have developed and put into use technology to build a wide-area wireless LAN at a dramatically reduced cost. The newly developed wireless multihop backhaul connects multiple wireless LAN access points to make them work with one another as a single radio network, cutting back on installation costs by reducing wiring for Internet connection. Wireless access points were installed in the commercial complex Canal City Hakata, resulting in the successful operation of one of the world’s largest indoor wireless multihop backhauls (with a relay of up to 11 access points). Background PicoCELA was set up for the purpose of commercializing the fruits of the MIMO-MESH Project led by Professor Hiroshi Furukawa of the Faculty of Information Science and Electrical Engineering, the Graduate School, Kyushu University. The project is part of the “Silicon Sea Belt Fukuoka Project” promoted by the Fukuoka prefectural government to build an East Asian belt of advanced semiconductor R&D sites. It is funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (under the Knowledge Cluster Creation Project Phase 2 program) and the Fukuoka Industry, Science and Technology Foundation (Fukuoka IST). The new wide-area wireless LAN was built as one of government-commissioned undertakings to do demonstration experiments in three area: technology for building a wi ...

The recycling system is a pilot project organized by Maritime Bureau of MLITT (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transportation and Tourism) in Japan, The Japanese Ship Owners’ Association (JSA) had requested its member companies to offer ships to the pilot project from an early stage. After the Maritime Bureau’s official invitation to the project, “K” Line, a member of JSA, nominated the “New York Highway” and contracted the sale of the vessel to Teraoka Co., Ltd., a member of Muroran Ship Recycling Study Group which was awarded the project by Maritime Bureau. The management of the group will be done by Japan Marine Science Inc. and Teraoka Co. Ltd. with other members executing the project.
