Filed under: Barack Obama , Religion , 2008 President In an under-reported sermon campaign speech, Barack Obama gave a pitch to people of faith. This political pitch was a homily this past weekend, in St. Louis, to the African Methodist Episcopal Church General Conference. One wonders if the repetitive mentioning of "Jesus" and reciting Christian scriptures suggest he'd be comfortable with Mike Huckabee as his running mate? Some observations... -- Offering a prayer for those afflicted from flooding...had a Republican done this, how would media elites react? -- He calls for a celebration of the promise of America...does this preclude celebrating its current nature? -- When he says "I won't be fulfilling the Lord's will unless I am doing the Lord's work" do we think he means something different than if a Republican were to say the same? -- Does the above quote mean Obama believes he transcends the "Wall of Separation" and like those certain about their Faith, his religion will dictate public policy? After all, if he doesn't, he says he won't be doing the "Lord's will." -- Obama adds our faith - the Lord's will - must be expressed in our public policy...had a Republican said this, would it have been extreme and radical? -- Obama says our values must be expressed in our government and then notes government needs to support faith-based organizations. Does that apply to those organziations that compete with unionized failing government ... Source: www.huffingtonpost.com --- 16 days ago
For the past three decades, the religious right has largely been the public face of Christianity in America. Televangelists such as Rev. Jerry Falwell, James Dobson and Rev. Pat Robertson became household names by relentlessly presenting a rigid form of conservative theology. Their rise was aided by the emergence of talk radio and cable television -- which served as huge mega-phones -- and GOP leaders who blessed them as "the base." In recent years, the moral authority of the right has been weakened by numerous political and sex scandals -- Sen. Larry Craig, Rev. Ted Haggard, Rep. Mark Foley and House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, to name a few. Widespread disenchantment with George W. Bush, the right's one-time savior, has also damaged the conservative brand. The right's relative decline has finally opened the door for mainstream religious leaders to challenge dogmatic interpretations of the Bible. Into this war over "The Word" stepped Barack Obama, a churchgoer who can communicate with religious voters in a way a politician like former Democratic nominee John Kerry never could. Obama's rare platform to present an alternative version of Christianity posed a direct threat to the religious right. This explains the tirade by Focus on the Family's founder James Dobson, who attacked Obama for a speech he gave on religion, saying that Obama "distorted" the Bible. While the spotlight is on Obama's beliefs, the mainstream media has failed to exam ... Source: www.huffingtonpost.com --- 14 days ago
The Rev. Jesse Jackson and Dr. James Dobson (of "Focus On The Family") must be in a conspiracy to get Senator Obama elected. With enemies like these Obama doesn't need friends. Obama is fortunate. Nothing will calm America's fears about voting for him more than the fact that the national village idiots are lining up to attack him. There is a strange symmetry between the whispered insults directed at Senator Obama by the Rev. Jesse Jackson -- caught on tape and recycled by FOX--and the public attacks made a few weeks ago by James Dobson. Both attacks on Obama came from dinosaurs, cranky leftovers from the era of mutual disrespect and hatred that has dominated American politics for almost 40 years. Jackson and Dobson share an identification as "religious leaders" who have developed their careers by endlessly grandstanding on the sidelines of the American debate. These days they are mainly famous for being famous. If Senator Obama becomes President both Jackson and Dobson (and many like them) will be out of luck for the same reason: post-racial and post-culture wars, America will have little patience with the professional dividers. Jackson and Dobson have their personal identities so wrapped up in the divisions of the last 40 years that Obama is a threat to them. Rush Limbaugh is in the Radio Hall of Fame and deservedly so. He redefined talk radio. This year, the Radio Hall of Fame is considering Dr. James Dobson, along with Howard Stern, Bob Costas, and Laura Schlessinger. As you can imagine, the left is going nuts over Dobson's nomination. They do not care about Dobson's impact on the medium. They do not care about how many people listen to him [ Ed. -- That is *precisely* what they care about]. They really only care that Dobson is a Christian with strongly held views they consider hateful, i.e. his opposition to gay marriage. A group called Truth Wins Out is trying to scuttle Dobson's nomination because, according to their Executive Director, "We believe that character counts and nominees should have careers based on honesty and integrity – not discrimination, distorting research and outright lying." Just to be clear here, this is a pro-gay organization that wants to shut out Dr. Dobson for disagreeing with the lifestyle -- in other words they are intolerant of Dobson's opinion and want to deny him entry into the Radio Hall of Fame as a result. It's a sad day in America when a man as imminently qualified for recognition in the field of radio as Dobson is would be shut out of the Hall of Fame for exercising his first amendment rights on the radio in a way leftists disagree with. I'd encourage you to go support Dr. Dobson. ... Source: www.queerty.com --- 15 days ago
Evangelical leader James Dobson again finds himself at the center of a scandal. No, he hasn’t blasted Barack Obama’s “fruitcake” interpretation of the Bible or constitution. by Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D. James Dobson has a Ph.D. in child development. He advocates spanking. He was once known as the Religious Rights New Kingmaker . The king he helped make was George W. Bush, who tops the list when American voters pick the worst U.S. President in the last 61 years. As a prominent character in the Bush-Rove nightmare, Dobson set himself up as a religiously-based political dictator bent on getting us to support his personal view of legislated morality. And whats even worse, Dobson goes to great length to use Scripture to support his view , and yet according to Time magazine he doesnt even have any formal theological training . In short, Dobson, using his position as a radio psychologist, has set himself up as our moral authority and asks us all to blindly follow . [italics added] His Focus on the Family empire is considerable, although not as powerful as it once was. A mid-September 2007 article from The Denver Channel.com reported that Focus on the Family is laying off 30 employees and reassigning 15 others, due in part to a drop in projected revenue Dobson and his organization have slowly but surely been losing power. Perhaps thats why the Chairman needed to make more outrageous statements to garner public attention and mobilize the sheeple to blindly follow and contribute to his cause. Dobson used his June 24, 2008 radio broadcast to make preposterous claims and attack Barack Obama. The attack was ... Source: www.regrettheerror.com --- 21 days ago
