In 2006, sportswriter Stefan Fatsis joined the Broncos as a placekicker during training camp. In this excerpt from his new book, "A Few Seconds of Panic," Fatsis talks with quarterback Jake Plummer before and after he was replaced by rookie Jay Cutler. ... Check out Frank Schwab’s training camp preview in Sunday’s Gazette. It’s a fun, in-depth look - Mike Shanahan looks terrifc as Underdog - at the Broncos chances this season. Those chances are looking pretty slim. This is now Jay Cutler’s team, but he carries an unfair burden. Think back to 2003, when Jake Plummer arrived in Denver. Plummer was [...] ...

Week 4 results for Saturday, Sept. 27 Tigers B Team 0, Danvers 30 At Ipswich Town Hall The Tigers' B Team played in a monsoon on Saturday against Danvers. Despite the deplorable conditions, the boys fought hard. They took the opening drive 50-yards before a miscue, and Danvers took momentum and never looked back on their way to a 30-0 win. Ipswich, with a patched-up offensive line, pushed Danvers around a bit. Luke Plummer and Chris Gregory were huge up front with John Waiswilos running the ball great. On the defensive side of the ball, Alex Jean Charles, playing in his second game, played well as did Ben Kaupp up front. Thanks to Kyle Blomster for coming to root on his team. Kyle broke his clavicle in practice and will be out for the season. Hopefully, the injury bug is gone for the season. The B Team will host an undefeated Marblehead team at 1 p.m. this Sunday at Ipswich Town Hall. Tigers JVC Team 0, Danvers 12 At Ipswich Town Hall Field An undermanned JVC team lost its first game of the season, 12-0, to visiting Danvers Blue. Once again, the Tigers were able to move the ball, but couldn't score. Hard running by Jake Long, Liam Sullivan, Ryan Sherman and Matt Gilligan produced first downs, but no touchdowns. Those runners were protected by Marc Morin, Bill Moriarty, Zach Mercier, Cam Waters, and Tim Stevens. The Tigers were tough once again on defense. Matt Travers, Owen Ward, Matt Temple, Daniel Lonergan and Zach Jean were ... Source: www.zml.com --- 31 days ago

Over at Warpaint Illustrated C.E. Wendler crafted a clever article in the style of our favorite Hutt, Jabba Whitlock. Here is a taste... I mentioned Gunther Cunningham earlier, but here’s the real kicker – Gunther may have Brady’s number, too. The last time Cunningham ran into Brady, it was no contest. Somehow, Gunther came up with a defensive gameplan that made Brady look like Jake Plummer. And this was in 2005, when the Chiefs were still giving up huge gobs of points every other week. Seriously, you remember that day. Gunther put a defense that included Eric Hicks , Eric Warfield, Kendrell Bell , Lional Dalton and Sammy Knight on the field against your offense. They hit Brady, confused him, and he threw four interceptions. Greg Wesley , who’s sitting on his couch combing his dreadlocks right about now, somehow snagged three of them. And you can read it in it's hilarious entirety here . ... Source: www.milehighreport.com --- 35 days ago
As a subscriber to Directv's Sunday Ticket package, I've had the chance to watch a lot of games today. The only ones I didn't watch any of were Buffalo-Seattle and San Francisco-Arizona. Observations on the other games follow. 1. Jacksonville can't pass protect, and that's going to be a huge problem if they think they're going to the Super Bowl. 2. Vince Young looked the same as last season, and that's a bad sign for Tenneseee, despite their win today. 3. I'm very impressed with little things I see from Matt Ryan. With the lead, and about 11 minutes to go in the game and the clock running, he was confused on a play call. He calmly waited until the play clock went all the way down to 1 before calling timeout. Just a heads-up, veteran thing to do from a guy making his first start. 4. The Michael Turner-Jerious Norwood combination is formidable, but the real story was the domination of the Atlanta O-line, against a pathetic looking Lions front seven. 5. St. Louis is pitiful, and their players and coaches looked like they fully knew it. 6. Jeff Garcia is fool's gold, a la Jake Plummer. There are a lot of good things about him, but the flaws are pronounced enough that you're probably kidding yourself if you think you can win a championship with him. 7. New Orleans needs to run the ball better between the tackles if they want to have a real chance of winning a championship. 8. Carson Palmer's knee injury from the 2005 play ... There is a long way to go, and the Broncos still have a lot of questions. That's all well and good, and I'll think about it tomorrow, tonight I am going to take some time to enjoy the re-birth of the Denver Broncos offense. Not the offense that Jake Plummer used to win a lot of regular season games from 2003-2006. No, the REAL Broncos offense. The one that is relentless. The one that keeps coming and keeps coming for 60 minutes. The offense that frustrates defenses into stupid penalties. That offense, behind Jay Cutler and a cast of young, talented linemen and skill position players, is back and with it the sky's the limit. The Broncos started fast, taking the opening kickoff and going the distance, scoring a TD on a beautiful touchdown pass from Jay Cutler to Eddie Royal. Yes, Eddie Royal. Let's take a moment to talk about the Offensive Rookie of the Year. My concern the entire pre-season was where Jay Cutler was going to go with the football with Brandon Marshall out. The answer came early and went all night long - 9 Catches, 146 yards, TD - the best performance for a receiver this weekend. On defense, the Broncos were alot more active, swarming the football and keeping the Raiders off the scoreboard f ...

That's how former Bronco Jason Elam describes a kicker's life in the NFL. At least that's what Elam told reporter turned kicker Stefan Fatsis when Fatsis packed his bags to attend training camp in 2006. Fatsis, 43, was given permission by Broncos owner, Pat Bowlen, to lace em' up and attend camp despite his size (5?8", 170lbs), and lack of football playing experience. Fatsis chronicles his summer camp experience in his new book, "A Few Second of Panic." Mike Shanahan tells Fatsis to attempt his first field goal in front of the entire camp. As if Fatsis doen't feel enough pressure, Shanahan tells everyone that if he makes it then meetings will end at 9:00 instead of 9:30. Fatsis misses, and in an excerpt from his book he says, "Amid a pulsing dance beat, I do a perp walk through the locker room. The reviews are not good. Linebacker Keith Burns: 'I was thoroughly disgusted.' Center Tom Nalen: 'Thanks for f—ing us.' Tight end Chad Mustard: 'S— the bed! Call housecleaning! We need new sheets!' Quarterback Jake Plummer: 'Don't … come near me. Get out of here." (The Wall Street Journal). Here's a quick video of Fatsis discussing his book: ... Source: www.yardbarker.com --- 96 days ago
Today begins a five-part series where we identify the 20 most thrilling wins in Jaguars history. Check back every day this week as we revisit 4 amazing victories per day. Be sure to leave us comments about what you remember about those games. Enjoy! #20 | 10/1/95 vs. Houston Oilers / 17-16: Win #1 out of 113 franchise wins so far. The Jaguars had lost their inaugural regular season home game in Jacksonville to the Oilers back in Week 1, and were 0-4 heading into the rematch in Houston. The Jaguars took a 10-6 lead into halftime, but found themselves down 16-10 in the 4th quarter. The tides would turn in the Jaguars' favor as QB Mark Brunell hit WR Desmond Howard for a 15-yard TD strike that won the game 17-16. #19 | 9/19/04 vs. Denver Broncos / 7-6: From the beginning of the 2004 preseason, the Jaguars' offense was a sputtering disaster. This game was no different as the Jaguars only managed 8 first downs, 176 passing yards, and 67 rushing yards. The Jaguars held a slim 7-6 lead at halftime, and the majority of the second half was nothing more than a punter's paradise. Toward the end of the 3rd quarter, Denver K Jason Elam missed a 51-yard field goal that would've given the Broncos the lead. But Denver got another chance. With 2:20 in the game, QB Jake Plummer led the Broncos down the field from their 11-yard line to Jaguars 23-yard line. Facing a 3rd and 9 with :37 left, the Broncos could have tried an easy field goal. But Coach Mike S ... Source: www.fanhome.com --- 33 days ago
Losing Brady certainly makes it difficult for the Patriots to seriously contend for a Super Bowl Championship this year. Yet I'm nonetheless excited to see if this team can persevere without the reigning MVP. It was only 7 years ago that a relatively unknown backup quarterback, drafted in the sixth round, replaced an established Pro Bowler and led his team to an improbable Super Bowl championship, with a vastly inferior cast of players. While I seriously doubt that history will repeat itself with Matt Cassel, I still think the Patriots will compete for a playoff spot and maybe make it as far as the second round. New England still has a top 5 defense, the best play-making wide receiver in the league, one of the best slot receivers, a strong special teams, and an underrated running game (Maroney, Jordan, Morris, Faulk) that will be utilized more in the absence of Brady. If Cassel doesn't grow into the role of starting quarterback, there are some free agent options available, including Chris Simms, Daunte Culpepper, Steve McNair, maybe even Vinny Testaverde and Jake Plummer.
