Ivan sez: Wizards "close" to signing Juan Dixon He says the contract will only be partially guaranteed (much like Dee Brown's) so the former Wizard isn't a lock to make the team by any means, but it's looking like both parties are willing to give it another go around. ...

FYI: Juan, who wore the number 3 during his previous stint with the Wizards, will wear number 12 this time. It was his high school number back in Baltimore." ...

Troliga startelvor MFF: Jonas Sandqvist - Ulrich Vinzents, Jimmy Dixon, Robert Åhman Persson, Christan Järdler- Guillermo Molins, Daniel Andersson, Labinot Harbuzi, Mike Jensen - Ola Toivonen, Jonatan Johansson TFF: Marcus Sahlman - Max Fuxberg, Jens Sloth, Rasmus Bengtsson, Yousef Fakhro - Kristian Haynes, Thommie Persson, Jonas Bjurström, Erik Sundin - Magnus Andersson, Andreas Drugge.   AIK - Hammarby Se separat artikel   Troliga startelvor AIK: Tomi Maanoja - Markus Jonsson, Nils-Eric Johansson, Per Karlsson, Pierre Bengtsson - Jorge Anchén, Daniel Tjernström, Jorge Ortiz, Bojan Djordjic - Saihou Jagne, Ivan Óbolo Hammarby: Kristoffer Björklund - David Johansson, Mikkel Jensen, Christian Traoré, Suleyman Sleyman - Carlos Gaete, Louay Chanko, Petter Andersson, Fredrik Söderström - Nathan Paulse, Charlie Davies.   Sport ...

There's been lots of talk on here about the 15th roster spot, which I understand.  Whoever wins it isn't going to do much in the regular season, but it's preseason and, save for injuries, there isn't much to discuss.  I figured I'd use this thread to put that entire discussion into one place.  It's entirely possible that this isn't a battle in the first place.  As several of you have pointed out, Ivan Carter is saying Dixon's roster spot "is all but guaranteed." (As a sidenote, if I was Ivan's editor, I would have never printed that line without attribution.  Who is saying Juan's spot is guaranteed?).  I'm kind of dubious, just because DerMarr is getting almost 20 minutes a game this preseason ( five more than Linton Johnson ), while Dee Brown is getting almost 25.  DerMarr is sixth on the team in preseason minutes, behind Brown and rotation mainstays Andray Blatche, Caron Butler, DeShawn Stevenson and Antonio Daniels.  Why give DerMarr so many minutes if you knew he wasn't going to make the team? So, without further ado, the smackdown.  This one will be serious, as I'm sure Jake can come up with a funny version. NOW: Antonio Tarver is the champion, but he's also the underdog in Saturday's light-heavyweight title fight against Chad Dawson at the Palms. The only thing I can figure out is the Stallone fight took a heavy toll on him. He was known as Mason "The Line" Dixon in 2006, and despite being a heavy favorite against 50-something Rocky Balboa in the movie of the same name, Tarver was lucky to pull out a split decision. In fact, if you bought the DVD and watched the alternate ending, he wound up losing a split decision. But at least he stood toe to toe with The Stallion. That's more than Ivan Drago could say. They filmed part of that movie here. I was able to sneak into the climactic fight scenes by going through an unattended back door at Mandalay Bay. As Michael Keaton said in "The Paper," a clip board and a confident wave will get you into anywhere you want to go. In the run-up to the fight, Dawson chastised "Rocky Balboa," or at least Tarver's role in it, as if he were Roger Ebert reviewing "Ishtar." But I thought Tarver did a nice job of acting for a fighter. In fact, I thought his character -- the unpopular champion who gets little respect from the public -- should have been better developed. Maybe it was, and those scenes, like Jerry Quarry, wound up on the cutting room floor. There was a scene in the movie where Tarver/Dixon is pelted with ice after a boring title defense. Talk about art imitating life. This is exactly how I fel ...

Our look back on the debut season of Ironside continues. * Episode: Let My Brother Go Airdate: 2 November 1967 Plot: What, no murder to solve? This week's episode casts Ironside as a tough-hearted Mother Teresa. The Chief is having trouble getting his Big Brother program for at-risk youth off the ground. It seems the boys in the hood would rather make zip guns than play touch football in the park with a bunch of off-duty cops. Sheeze, kids. Whatever arrangement Ironside thought he'd worked out with a resident gang isn't working; the Mambas continue intimidating anyone from joining in the fuzz-sponsored reindeer games. Perhaps pro-football star "Bat" Masterson, who happens to be a childhood friend of Mark's, is just the star attraction Ironside's boys' club needs. Unfortunately, Bat comes with his own set of baggage - a no-good, ex-con younger brother. Before you can say "wheelman," we've got us a dead man. Guest stars: Ivan Dixon plays Charles "Bat" Masterson. You might recognize him as Kinchloe from Hogan's Heroes . Here come the fuzz. Here come the fuzz: The episode begins with a parade of police vehicles, including the Ironsidemobile , driving through San Francisco with lights flashing and Ironside looking particularly stone-faced. The Chief is dead serious about something and he's got the backup to prove it. Their destination - the clubhouse where the Mamba gang hangs out. Ed is the first cop to hit the ground, banging on th ...

A lovely remembrance by Jill at Brilliant at Breakfast, paying appropriate tribute to Paul Newman, who was by all accounts a truly class guy, and a heckuva actor. I can't add too much to that, so I won't try. However, this really has been a tough year for the obituary column. I'm not going to pore through the past twenty years of deaths, but it seems to me we've lost a ton of well-known, significant people this year, more than other recent years. One starts with the two Hollywood giants, Paul Newman and Charlton Heston, pushing the great Richard Widmark, Paul Scofield, and Roy Scheider to the supporting cast. Then there are a bunch of folks who were the kind of solid performers who brighten up our films, and they'll be missed: Bernie Mac foremost among them. And two great directors, Sydney Pollack and Anthony Minghella. We cannot forget two great young talents who had more to offer, if only they could have escaped their personal demons: Heath Ledger and Brad Renfro. Television brings its own kind of intimacy, and, even though many of these folks were not front-burner any more, they still occupy a special place in many of us: Allan Melvin, Lois Nettleton, Barry Morse, Ivan Dixon, Harvey Korman, Estelle Getty, and, a particular favorite of mine, Suzanne Pleshette. And, of course, we lost the unclassifiable George Carlin. Two of the truly great writers, similar only in their talent, are gone: Arthur C. Clarke and Alexander Solzhenitsyn. Wi ...

As you know, a few months ago, my decision to watch CAR WASH killed actor Ivan Dixon . Watching my NetFlix rental of MICHAEL CLAYTON killed actor/director/producer Sydney Pollack . And my viewing of TRANSFORMERS on HBO killed actor/comedian Bernie Mac . But, as I was thinking about watching SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT a couple of weeks ago, singer/actor Jerry Reed passed away. I love candid shots of celebrities. This one’s circa 1977. 10-4 Snowman...over and out. Which means I didn’t kill Jerry Reed. OR my mental powers are becoming so much stronger...that merely thinking about watching SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT killed him. Oh, my God. I must be stopped. Or encouraged to think a LOT more about Tom Cruise . ...

Directed by Don Medford Robert Vaughn, Luciana Paluzzi, Patricia Crowley, Fritz Weaver, David McCallum, William Marshall, Ivan Dixon, Will Kuluva, Miguel Landa Music by Jerry Goldsmith To Trap A Spy was the first of The Man From UNCLE movies. Like all the UNCLE movies, it was put together from two episodes of the television series. The episodes for this film were 'The Vulcan Affair' and 'The Four Steps Affair'. Because they were two separate stories, certain liberties were taken when they were edited together. One of the strangest, is that the villains of the piece are an outfit called WASP. But if you listen carefully and watch the actors lips, you can see that this is an overdub. The villains were originally THRUSH. The show starts with a car skidding to a halt on Old Post Road in Arlington, Virginia. The driver, who happens to be Agent Lancer (Miguel Landa) from UNCLE has been shot in the stomach. He staggers from the car and enters an overgrown estate. As he makes his way towards the house, another car pulls up and two armed WASP operatives get out and follow. Lancer makes it to the house and enters, locking the door behind him. He calls for Angela, but nobody responds. He climbs the stairs to the second floor and burns the secret information he was carrying in the fireplace. Then he phones UNCLE headquarters direct. He passes on the following information to Mr. Allison (Will Kuluva), the head of UNCLE: 'When the Premier of Western ...

Three notable people from the entertainment industry have passed away in recent days. Bernie Mac , Bernie Brillstein and Bernie...er, I mean Isaac ... Isaac Hayes . I won’t go into the details of their lives or what made them notable. If you know them, you already know why. And if you don’t know them, there’s always Google ...if you're interested in that sort of thing. What struck me, though, was the multitude of things I found out about them by reading their obituaries. The prolific songwriting of Hayes. The measure of the impact Brillstein had on modern comedy. And Mac...well, as with Ivan Dixon and Sydney Pollack , I think I killed him by watching his performance in TRANSFORMERS the night before his death. In fact, it makes me afraid to turn on my television. With all the STAR TREK I watch, I think Shatner and Nimoy are truly in danger. But, my reading — and subsequent learning — made me think everybody should have an obituary...and everybody’s obituary should be read before they die. Because learning all those obituary-type facts and anecdotes about these people made me view them very positively...and very differently. And I would have liked to view them positively and differently while they were still breathing. I would have liked to view them with a sense of the depth of their achievements and a greater understanding of who they are. Instead, I can only view them with a greater understanding of who they were . And right about now ...

Is there a curse of Car Wash , the 1976 movie show directed by Michael Schultz? Nah, time's passing is all. Norman Whitfield's death brought back to me how groovy Car Wash is, B movie production quality be damned. It's a workers' movie, a kind we ought to see more of, a kind that had a strong showing in the rough and tumble 1970s. Well, since we're back in the rough and tumble thirty odd years later, why not take another look back and see how people responded then? If all else fails, you can read Roger Ebert's review linked on www.imdb.com under Car Wash and get his take. Look at that cover: Richard Pryor and George Carlin, RIP. Those guys were a trip . Ivan Dixon, the sympatico foreman in Car Wash and all around terrific character actor (graduated from North Carolina College at Durham, now North Carolina Central University, in 1954, and was a regular on Hogan's Heroes ) died earlier this year -- three months before Carlin. Man, I miss 'em all, Norman Whitfield included. Time to find that digital copy of Car Wash , no question! Today's Rune: Growth. ...
