A continuation of my Superficial Girl romps ...last time Vietnam ...this time Turkey. Several years ago a read a funny essay in Outside magazine by a backpacker who visited Turkey determined he was not going to buy a rug. He had no home. What the heck would he do with a rug? If anyone could resist the rug sellers, it seems it was this guy with no place – not even a tent – to roll out a carpet. Well, one thing led to another and next thing he knew he was drinking tea at a rug shop and wouldntchaknow, he bought a rug. Seventy percent of visitors supposedly leave Turkey with a rug. The rug sellers, I’d heard, are relentless and well-skilled in getting folks into their shops. And once in the shop …you’re done. Now I know a little about shopping … some might even say I’m borderline obsessed with it (I added the borderline part …the others are wrong), but like the guy in Outside, I was determined this trip would not include a souvenir rug. No, what I was looking for was something far more unique. I mean, like the numbers show, everyone comes home with a rug. I had to come home with something …fabulous, something unique, something that was not a rug. So my quest *kind of* clearly defined, I set out for Turkey. Oh yeah, I planned to see the Blue Mosque and some of those type places too. ;) My advance planning did involve contacting a personal shopper.
