United Press International - August 19, 2008 BEIJING, Aug 19, 2008 (UPI via COMTEX) -- For Rabbi Shimon Freundlich, the road to the Beijing Olympics was an obstacle course to provide Kosher food and spiritual comfort to Jewish athletes. Although Beijing has at least one Kosher restaurant, where Freundlich certifies the food, Judaism is not one of the five religions that have official recognition in China. Freundlich told the Israeli newspaper Haaretz that Chinese officials did not "really know how to operate," although they knew that Olympic bylaws required a synagogue, Rabbi and Kosher food. "Only after I made it clear to them that I understood my appointment was not an official government appointment did the Chinese agree to meet with me," he said. The Chabad organization, which Freundlich represents, had to get special permission to bring religious groups to Beijing. It took complaints from Jewish athletes to get Kosher food instead of airplane-style vegetarian meals prepared according to Muslim dietary law. Freundlich got special permission to bring challah bread into the Olympic Village for the Sabbath -- with Chinese Olympic officials keeping an eagle eye on its preparation. Some of his colleagues from other faiths at the Olympics complained before the Games that no one was coming to services. "Have patience," he told them. "When the Games begin, they will come looking for God." URL: www.upi.com Copyright 2008 by United Press In ... Source: rhr.israel.net --- 1 day ago

By Rabbi Shmuley Boteach Materialism is becoming a cancer to the American Jewish community. Our children feel entitled. They are often spoiled. They take and do not know how to give back. They are part of a me generation where self-absorption is lifetimes calling. Thats why this summer I arranged for three of my teenage children to work as volunteers in the childrens camp of Rabbi Yossi Turk in Cordoba, Argentina. The work is not easy and our children, while working very hard, also complained that there werent enough recreational outlets. I reminded them that Rabbi Turk and his wife have been in Cordoba ensuring that thousands of Israeli backpackers have a place for Shabbos not for two weeks, but for 22 years. You dont hear them complaining. The experience for my children was profound. They were inspired by the site of Jews who devote their entire lives to the spiritual education of others and parents who have to send most of their kids six thousand miles away to Jewish schools in the United States. For the last week of their stay I met my children in Buenos Aires. We toured the Jewish community, including the Jewish Community Center, Amia, which was bombed in July, 1994, killing 85, and which has since been rebuilt. A highlight was a two-day jaunt to Montevideo, Uruguay, where we witnessed the inspirational work of Rabbi Leizer and Rochi Shemtov, living there for 23 years, their seven children all studying far away from home, in ... Author: Tamar Fox Posted to Jewcy: August 01, 2008 6:45 pm ===== Last week, a minor political scandal unfolded around the note that Barack Obama put between the stones of the Kotel when he visited the Wall during his tour of Israel. Dug out from between the stones by a yeshiva student, and printed in the Israeli newspaper Ma’ariv. Obama at the wall: maybe he should have pushed that note a bit further backRabbi Shmuel Rabinovitz, the Rabbi in charge of the Kotel, condemned the newspaper and their violation of Obama’s privacy, saying “The notes placed between the stones of the Western Wall are between a person and his maker. It is forbidden to read them or make any use of them.". The yeshiva student apologized for his actions, saying it was “kind of a prank.” Ma'ariv spread some rumors that Obama had leaked the contents of the note before he even went to the wall, but that seems to have been proved false. Ma'ariv’s third helpful contribution was the following sentence, printed the following: "In any case, since Obama is not a Jew, publishing the note does not constitute an infringement on his right to privacy." There are a few issues here. First of all, publicizing someone’s private letter, whether it’s to God, Santa Claus, or their... By Joshua Runyan and Tamar Runyan A Georgian Jew prays in Tbilisis central synagogue. (File photo: Dato Rostomashvili) At least 1,000 Jews left Georgia for Israel Tuesday after five days of war plunged the former Soviet republic into chaos. With the help of Rabbi Meir Kozlovsky, a Chabad-Lubavitch emissary in the capital city of Tbilisi, staff at the Israeli Embassy processed the paperwork of those seeking emergency transport to Tel Aviv.According to Kozlovsky, some 200 Jewish residents of Tbilisi joined Israeli nationals, businesspeople and tourists for the armored convoys to the citys international airport, and boarding on one of four flights out of the country. Along with Rabbi Abe Melech Rosenblatt, director of Tbilisis yeshiva, Kozlovsky attested to the local Georgians Jewish identities, a requirement for the issuance of a temporary Israeli passport. As he waited with his wife and children at the airport Kozlovsky will help provide for the Georgians needs in Israel the Rabbi said that despite the recent news of a ceasefire, people werent taking any chances. The safety of our community is our primary concern, said Kozlovsky. The situation changes minute to minute. Thank G-d, were okay we even had people at the synagogue for morning service but we dont know what the coming days will bring. Earlier Tuesday, an embassy employee said that Israels diplomatic mission would evacuate on Friday. The yard of the embass ... Source: www.israelenews.com --- 50 days ago

The Guardian today had this feature on descendants of Nazis, including a shirt-tail relative of Adolf Hitler, who became Jews, and in one case a Rabbi, supposedly to cleanse themselves of the sins of their fathers. Naturally, this aspect of their conversions is what was focussed on: I walk through the Old City, pondering my encounter with this strange, kindly man. Something seems to be missing from his story. To stand in front of a Rabbi whose father was in the SS and to hear he became a Jew because he doubted the Trinity is absurd. So I telephone Dan Bar-On, a professor of psychology at Ben Gurion University, and a world expert on the psychology of the children of perpetrators. He tells me, flatly, pitilessly: "The motive of the converts is to join the community of the victims. If you become part of the victim community, you get rid of the burden of being part of the perpetrator community." He interviewed Shear-Yashuv for his book Legacy of Silence. "For me," he says, "Shear-Yashuv [a Rabbi whose father was in the Waffen-SS but has himself served in the Israeli army] represents a person who ran away from the past." ... Well, the question got answered: The Saudis are willing to invite an Israeli Rabbi to the interfaith conference to be held later this month. It would have been better had the conference been held in Saudi Arabia rather than Madrid, but it’s a useful step. Israeli Rabbi invited to Saudi interfaith meeting MARK LAVIE ERUSALEM—Saudi Arabia has invited an Israeli Rabbi to an interfaith conference in Spain, potentially the first step in wider contacts between the kingdom and Israel, the Rabbi told The Associated Press on Thursday. Rabbi David Rosen said Saudi Arabia called the conference, set for Madrid from July 16-18, to bring world religions together to confront common challenges. Rosen called the invitation “a historic step for them.” But he warned that it might be no more than a Saudi attempt to improve its image and that of Islam in the face of criticism over the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the U.S. and other instances of Islamic extremism. No comment was available Thursday from the Saudi embassy in Madrid. … ... Source: altnews.blogdig.net --- 30 days ago
