Clip Source: www.telegraph.co.uk US intelligence fears the Kremlin will supply the sophisticated S-300 system to Tehran if Washington pushes through Nato membership for its pro-Western neighbours Georgia and Ukraine. The proposed deal is causing huge alarm in the US and Israel as the S-300 can track 100 targets at once and fire on Planes up to 75 miles away. That would make it a "game-changer", greatly improving Iranian defences against any air strike on its nuclear sites, according to Pentagon adviser Dan Goure. "This is a system that scares every Western air force," he said. Senior US intelligence operatives believe that Russia is planning to use a stand-off over the S-300 to create a foreign policy showdown that would test the mettle of a new US president. A senior Iranian military commander warned "Any aggression against Iran will start a world war," "The unrestrained greed of the US leadership and global Zionism... is gradually leading the world to the edge of a precipice." ... An Israeli airliner that received a fighter jet escort after a bomb threat landed safely Wednesday at an airport outside Tel Aviv, authorities said. No bomb was found. Israeli fighter jets accompanied the El Al Israel Airlines flight in to Ben Gurion Airport from the time it entered Israeli airspace. After it landed, Israeli security checked the plane, the military said. Channel 2 TV reported that the plane, which originated in Paris, was a Boeing 767. Airport security on flights to Israel is legendary for its thoroughness, because Israel-bound airliners are considered prime targets for attackers. The last known incidents of bombs exploding aboard El Al Planes were in 1986. In June, a bomb in a suitcase exploded in a plane while it was still on the ground in Madrid, and in April a bomb planted inside a radio blew up during a flight from London but caused only minimal damage. ... For years and years now -- nine years, to be precise, since this 1999 article in the NY Times magazine and my subsequent Atlantic article and book Free Flight -- I've been arguing that the mounting hassles of airline travel, and the emergence of radically cheaper, safe small Planes, would make "air taxis" increasingly popular.* DayJet, the best-funded and most widely-known of these services -- plus the one I have found most interesting -- ran into setbacks this summer during the credit and fuel-price crunch, but it now is expanding again. SATSair , which uses new, small Cirrus SR22 propeller airplanes for routes on the East Coast, has seen a significant rise in business this year. Now comes Miwok Airlines , run by a software entrepreneur and Israeli AF air traffic controller named Gad Barnea, which will provide short-haul service using Cirrus airplanes in and around the LA basin. LA Times article on Miwok here ; analysis by my friend Chet Richards here . The company plans to serve 40 small airports from roughly Oxnard to San Diego. According to a CalTech professor quoted in the LAT, "It's not competition to the airlines but a competitor to driving." What makes it like a taxi service, and unlike a scheduled airline, is that Miwok needs to send a plane to Oxnard -- or Torrance or San Bernardino -- only when a customer wants to go there. That is, it can "serve" 40 small airports but not necessarily go to any specific airport for days at ... Source: buzzflash.net --- 28 days ago
The security aid package the United States has refused to give Israel for the past few months out of concern that Israel would use it to attack nuclear facilities in Iran included a large number of "bunker-buster" bombs, permission to use an air corridor to Iran, an advanced technological system and refueling Planes. Officials from both countries have been discussing the Israeli requests over the past few months. Their rejection would make it very difficult for Israel to attack Iran, if such a decision is made. About a month ago, Haaretz reported that the Bush administration had turned down an Israeli request for certain security items that could upgrade Israel's capability to attack Iran. The U.S. administration reportedly saw the request as a sign preparations were moving ahead for an Israeli attack on Iran. Diplomatic and security sources indicated to Haaretz that the list of components Israel included: Bunker-buster GBU-28 bombs: In 2005, the U.S. said it was supplying these bombs to Israel. ... ---Quote--- LONDON (AFP) Israel seriously considered bombing Iran's nuclear sites earlier this year but US President George W. Bush refused to support such a strike, according to a British newspaper report. Quoting senior European diplomatic sources, The Guardian said Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert raised the issue with Bush in a one-to-one meeting May 14. Bush said he would not support such a strike because of fears of retaliation, possibly on US targets in Iraq and Afghanistan, and concerns that the *Israelis would fail to disable Iran's nuclear facilities anyway*, it said. The newspaper noted that even if Israel had wanted to go ahead without Washington's agreement, its Planes would be unable to reach Iran without passing through US-controlled airspace above Iraq. Iran would be bound to assume that Washington approved the strike, raising the prospect of an attack against the United States, it said. Israel considers Iran its greatest threat, because of Tehran's accelerating nuclear programme and repeated statements by its leaders predicting the Jewish state's demise. Israel and the United States accuse Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons, while Tehran has insisted its programme is entirely peaceful. Neither the United States nor Israel -- the Middle East's sole, if undeclared, nuclear armed state -- has ruled out a military response to the nuclear standoff. Olmert's spokesman, Mark Regev, told The Guardian: "The nee ... Source: www.worldaffairsboard.com --- 27 days ago
Is Israel playing it the *Russian way* with India ? ---Quote--- *India paid high price for 3 AWACS Planes from Israel: Expert* New Delhi, Sept 14: Finding fault with the existing acquisition system for the armed forces, a former senior Army officer has said these drawbacks have led India to pay much more for purchases as in the deal to acquire three AWACS aircraft from Israel in 2004. "India has failed to negotiate full-proof agreements with clearly defined provisions...In almost all contracts, imprecise and flawed provisions led to multiple interpretations during the implementation stage," Maj Gen (Retd) Mrinal Suman, who was associated with procurement procedures and offsets while in service, said. He quoted reports in the Israeli press as saying that "India paid more than double the amount for the purchase of three AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) aircraft from Israel in March 2004." These aircraft, he said, were earlier being sold to China for USD 358 million but the deal had to be aborted under US pressure. "Subsequently, India agreed to buy them for USD 1.1 billion, a whopping USD 742 million more than the price agreed to by the Chinese," Suman said in an article in the latest issue of 'Indian Defence Review'. Noting that there were "numerous" instances where India paid "exorbitant amounts" for defence equipment, he referred to the coffin scam and said "inability to negotiate contracts astutely has been the bigges ... If Israel is going to attack Iran, it is going to have to go at it alone. While direct U.S. involvement in any Israeli-led mission was not likely, some analysts believed that the Bush administration would allow the U.S. to play, at minimum, an indirect role - either by supplying some of the technical necessities, or providing an air route over Iraq. I have long been skeptical of the idea that the U.S. would involve itself in such an attack for a number of strategic and political reasons. An article today in the Israeli daily Haartez seems to confirm my suspicions: The security aid package the United States has refused to give Israel for the past few months out of concern that Israel would use it to attack nuclear facilities in Iran included a large number of “bunker-buster” bombs, permission to use an air corridor to Iran, an advanced technological system and refueling Planes. Bismillaah. Salaam/Peace. A DECLARATION OF U.S. INDEPENDENCE FROM ISRAEL Chris Hedges Israel, without the United States, would probably not exist. The country came perilously close to extinction during the October 1973 war when Egypt, trained and backed by the Soviet Union, crossed the Suez Canal and the Syrians poured in over the Golan Heights. Huge American military transport Planes came to the rescue. They began landing every half-hour to refit the battered Israeli army, which had lost most of its heavy armor. By the time the war as over, the United States had given Israel $2.2 billion in emergency military aid. "There were several reasons for the war in Iraq. The desire for American control of oil, the belief that Washington could build puppet states in the region, and a real, if misplaced, fear of Saddam Hussein played a part in the current disaster. But it was also strongly shaped by the notion that what is good for Israel is good for the United States. Israel wanted Iraq neutralized. Israeli intelligence, in the lead-up to the war, gave faulty information to the U.S. about Iraq's alleged arsenal of weapons of mass destruction. And when Baghdad was taken in April 2003, the Israeli government immediately began to push for an attack on Syria. The lust for this attack has waned, in no small part because the Americans don't have enough troops to hang on in Iraq, much less launch a new occupation." "The weakening of the United States, ...
