From a fascinating article by Commander John Patch (Ret.), in the United States Naval Institute's Proceedings magazine: The Israeli Navy immediately challenges unidentified or uncooperative vessels with well-armed surface patrol craft. Any hint of a threat means armed Aircraft accompany the patrol craft. Ships foolish enough to then ignore or evade the Israeli Navy can expect to be fired on and seized if they cross into the 12-nautical-mile limit. Simply put, the Israelis take maritime homeland defense (MHLD) very seriously, they are exceptionally proficient at it, and America can learn much from them. ... Israeli defense officials say the government has told all businessmen involved in military sales to Georgia to immediately cease visits to the former Soviet republic. The officials say the directive was decided upon this week because Israel is concerned about damage to its relations with Russia. Israel had decided to stop most weapons sales to Georgia even before the Russia-Georgia war last month. One of Israel's primary concerns is that Russia could sell Iran advanced weapons, including anti-Aircraft missiles. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the directive had not been made public. Israel has sold Georgia drones and other technologies, and Israelis trained Georgian units in urban warfare and counterterrorism tactics. ... Source: www.kentucky.com --- 3 days ago
Russia's Foreign Ministry suggested Thursday that Moscow would not sell advanced anti-Aircraft missiles to Iran, a possibility that has alarmed Israel. Observers have said sophisticated S-300 missile systems could be used by Iran to defend military targets like the Russian-built Bushehr nuclear power plant. That would make any military strike more difficult, and Israel, the United States and other nations have pressured Russia not to sell such weapons to Iran, Syria or other nations that have threatened Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said he discussed Russian weapons sales during a visit to Moscow this week. Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko was asked by reporters Thursday whether Russia had promised Israel it would not sell weapons such as S-300s. ... Source: www.imemc.org --- 11 days ago

Summary: Would Washington support an Israeli attack? Recently, the administration has given clear signals that it would not. But then, why did the Pentagon announce last month that it planned to sell Israel 1,000 new GBU-39 bunker-busting bombs? They are small weapons that can be dropped from the wings of the fighter jets in Israel’s air force. Each can penetrate 6 feet of reinforced concrete. If several Aircraft hit the same target the total penetration could be much deeper. source: McClatchy-Tribune News Serviceread more ...

Israel and Russia will upgrade their strategic dialogue and use that forum to share intelligence assessments and discuss Russian arms sales to the region, a senior source in the Prime Minister’s Office said Tuesday, following Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s meeting in the Kremlin with Russian President Dmitri Medvedev. Olmert raised the issue of arms sales, including the proposed sale of S-300 anti-Aircraft missiles to Syria and Iran, with the Russian president, the source said, adding that the Israeli team left the meeting feeling that “[the Russians] understand more clearly now our concerns.” The source would not say, however, whether Moscow committed not to sell the weapons system, which could severely curtail the IAF’s freedom in the skies. The source characterized the discussions with Medvedev, as well as talks the night before with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, as “open and frank.” This was Olmert’s first meeting with Medvedev, elected who was elected earlier this year. In addition to the arms issue, the source said Olmert, “urged the Russians to play a more active role in getting Teheran to cease uranium enrichment.” Olmert, the source said, reminded the Russians that they have the “influence, leverage and power” to do so, and asked the Kremlin to use its “assets more effectively in dealing with the area of nuclear proliferation.” The Russians, the source said, made clear that Moscow would “do nothing to harm Israel ... Is Israel playing it the *Russian way* with India ? ---Quote--- *India paid high price for 3 AWACS planes from Israel: Expert* New Delhi, Sept 14: Finding fault with the existing acquisition system for the armed forces, a former senior Army officer has said these drawbacks have led India to pay much more for purchases as in the deal to acquire three AWACS Aircraft from Israel in 2004. "India has failed to negotiate full-proof agreements with clearly defined provisions...In almost all contracts, imprecise and flawed provisions led to multiple interpretations during the implementation stage," Maj Gen (Retd) Mrinal Suman, who was associated with procurement procedures and offsets while in service, said. He quoted reports in the Israeli press as saying that "India paid more than double the amount for the purchase of three AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) Aircraft from Israel in March 2004." These Aircraft, he said, were earlier being sold to China for USD 358 million but the deal had to be aborted under US pressure. "Subsequently, India agreed to buy them for USD 1.1 billion, a whopping USD 742 million more than the price agreed to by the Chinese," Suman said in an article in the latest issue of 'Indian Defence Review'. Noting that there were "numerous" instances where India paid "exorbitant amounts" for defence equipment, he referred to the coffin scam and said "inability to negotiate contracts astutely has been the bigges ...
