"Islam: The Religion and the People" by Bernard Lewis with Buntzie Ellis Churchill (Wharton School Publishing, 256 pages, $21.99) In his most recent work, longtime Middle East historian Bernard Lewis aims to present "a picture of Islam as it really was and is." The result is somewhat uneven, if always readable. At his best Lewis offers candid glimpses into aspects such as Islamic fashion and the problems of interpreting Arabic words. And his effort to overcome the dichotomy between pandering apologetics for Islam and damning misrepresentations is commendable. Yet there are shortcomings. Comparisons with Christianity and Judaism, which Lewis frequently draws on if only to show their inadequacy, tend to obscure the inner dynamic of Islamic thought. At times his brevity misrepresents the complexity of contemporary Islam even when he is factually accurate. Jokes told by Muslims punctuate the book and show a side of Islam rarely seen by Westerners, but some are from distant times and do not represent Muslims as they would represent themselves.
