Did the Irish reject the European Union’s Lisbon treaty last June because they are “losing their Christian memory?” Cardinal Seán Brady, the top Catholic cleric in the once staunchly Catholic country, thinks that can partially explain the Vote. The cardinal told a conference in County Mayo on Sunday that many Christians in Europe think the EU [...] ...

A declining Europe must focus on the nitty-gritty By Leif Pagrotsky Published: August 14 2008 19:20 | Last updated: August 14 2008 19:20 At this time of failures in Iraq and on Wall Street, when the US has lost its role as model and inspiration for policymakers and others around the world, a golden opportunity has arisen for Europe to offer an alternative to look up to and find inspiration from. But Europe is not in good shape. It is not just about the Irish Vote. The Irish referendum on the Lisbon treaty in June is merely a scapegoat for... ...

(1 Vote - 0 comments - 10 views) I've been on the biggest Oasis kick the past few weeks and came across this video. Noel made this appearance on the Irish TV show "The Late Late Show" on March 22nd, 1996 shortly after playing a concert. Absolutely amazing solo acoustic version of my favorite Oasis song. The video quality isn't the best, but thankfully the audio is pretty good. ...

by young_dev (Posted 3 hours ago) Are the posters on this board representative of the general Irish population or a bunch or “wing nuts”, atheists, fringe republicans, Muslim apologists, Euro sceptics and loonies lefties? Looking at the last general election, 80% plus of the Vote went to the main stream centrist parties yet this board it seems that roughly 80% plus of the post are by the political fringe. href="http://www.politics.ie/viewtopic.php?f=88&t=39542"> ...

by FutureTaoiseach (Posted Yesterday, 11:59 pm) Now it seems that the EU Commission may have been economical with the truth about its own poll findings, specifically in terms of what percentage of no voters cited not understanding the Treaty's contents, as Open Europe have discovered: Looking at the official results of the Eurobarometer 'snap poll' of Irish voters following the No Vote (released today), there's a striking contrast between the figures in it and the figures that were leaked out to journalists before the summit. The Times story on 18 June ran with the headline “Irish voters failed to understand the Lisbon Treaty”, citing a figure from the EU Commission stating that, amongst No voters, “40 per cent blamed the fact that they did not understand the treaty.” Below is the extract from the briefing note pushed around by the Commission – the basis for the story in the Times, and other papers: http://www.openeurope.org.uk/commissionpoll.pdf However, when we compare this with the official Eurobarometer poll, published today (20 June) – after the Summit had concluded – we see a very different picture: http://ec.europa.eu/public_opinion/flash/fl_245_en.pdf Just 22% of No voters said their Vote was informed by a lack of knowledge/ familiarity with the Treaty. The EU Commission’s unofficial briefing seems to have arbitrarily doubled the proportion of voters falling into this category – presumably if this had not ...

Unless you have seen it first first-hand, as part of the press scrum or as a campaign staffer, it is almost impossible to imagine how grueling the process of running for national office is. Everybody gets exhausted. The candidates have to answer questions and offer views roughly 18 hours a day, and any misstatement on any topic can get them in trouble. Why do candidates so often stick to a stump speech that they repeat event after event and day after day? Because they've worked out the exact way to put their positions on endless thorny issues -- Iraq, abortion, the Middle East, you name it -- and they know that creative variation mainly opens new complications. If someone is campaigning for the presidency or vice presidency, there's an extra twist. That person has to have a line of argument to offer on any conceivable issue. Quick, without pausing in the next ninety seconds, tell me what you think about: the balance of relations between Taiwan and mainland China, and exactly what signals we're sending to Hamas, and what we think about Russia's role in the G-8 and potentially in NATO, and where North Korea stands on its nuclear pledges -- plus Iran while we're at it, plus the EU after the Irish Vote, plus cap-and-trade as applied to India and China, and what's the right future for South Ossetia; and let's not even start on domestic issues. The point about every one of those issues is that there is a certain phrase or formulation that mi ...

Gov. Deval Patrick's latest nominee for the Industrial Accident Board, which handles workers' compensation claims, told the Governor's Council yesterday that prompt decision-making would be his top priority. "You need to make a decision and you need to get it out," said attorney Dennis Maher, a Northborough resident, when asked about his frustration with the current Industrial Accident Board. "That will be my number-one objective if I sit as a judge," he said. Maher, who previously applied for an IAB judgeship in 2004, noted his roots as the son of Irish immigrants and his working-class background. "I think that brings a special qualification to you, aside from your professional experience," said council member Carole Fiola. "You have the qualities I look for," added fellow councilor Marilyn Devaney, pledging to Vote for him next week. A Suffolk University Law School and Framingham State College graduate, Maher is a counsel at the law firm Black & Bynoe of Boston. He has served as a Marlborough City Council member and worked at Liberty Mutual and Wellesley's Department of Public Works. If approved by the Governor's Council, Maher would serve a six-year term on the board. Attorney Joseph Agnelli, who spoke on Maher's behalf, said Maher shows "true judiciousness in the courtroom as an advocate." "He's willing to compromise when the time is right, he's willing to fight when the time is right," he said. In a November letter to the gov ...

Residents who want to Vote in the Sept. 16 state primary have until Wednesday to register. Voter offices across the Fall River area are extending hours to accept last-minute registrations. In Fall River, the Board of Elections office will be open until 8 p.m. Wednesday. On Sunday, the city hosted Fall River Rocks the Vote, a registration drive with members of the city’s elections office on hand. The first 25 to register at the event and the person who brought the most people to register were to receive prizes. Wednesday is also the deadline for changing voter information such as party affiliation. During a primary election, voters may only cast a ballot for candidates of the party listed on their registration. In Westport, the Board of Registrars office will hold a special registration session Wednesday in Town Hall from 4 to 8 p.m. Residents can also register during normal office hours, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Swansea Town Hall will stay open until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, too, though an employee said very few residents stop by to register on the last day. Somerset Town Hall will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, but clerk Pat Hart said she, too, sees little extra traffic. “Unfortunately not,” she said. “People have been coming in off and on in the last month or so, but not usually the last day.” Sunday’s Rock the Vote, outside the St. James Irish Pub on Purchase Street, didn’t attract the turnout hoped for, said Adam Cha ...
