Iranian university officials expressed particular interest in academic exchanges related to peace, justice, conflict and religion, according to several members of the Delegation. Sommer said she hopes that such exchanges can contribute to peace between Iran and the U.S. despite high tensions between governments. She noted that many Iranians fear a military attack by the U.S. or its allies, and many Americans would be afraid to travel to Iran. "There's nothing scary about going there," she said. The ten-day Delegation is organized by the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR), the oldest and largest interfaith peace organization in the United States, and is FOR’s eighth fact-finding and friendship Delegation to Iran. Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb, one of the first ten women rabbis in the history of Judaism, will co-lead the Delegation, along with FOR Executive Director Mark C. Johnson. In May 2008, Gottlieb became the first woman rabbi to visit Iran and the first U.S. rabbi known to travel there in a formal peacemaking capacity since the 1979 revolution. “Last spring, I was received graciously by Iranian political and religious leaders,” said Rabbi Gottlieb. “I am pleased to return to that country, accompanied by colleagues from different religious paths, to engage in intensive dialogue. A high-ranking Delegation of some six American university deans, headed by the chancellor of "Association of American Universities" held talks with Minister of Science, Research and Technology Mohammad-Mehdi Zahedi here on Sunday. While in Iran from Nov. 14 to Nov. 20, President David Skorton met with Iranian Minister of Science, Research and Technology Mohammad Mehdi Zahedi, despite reports that the president would not be meeting with Iranian government officials. According to Skorton, who traveled to Tehran last month for six days with a Delegation of six university presidents on a trip coordinated by the Association of American Universities, the group did not meet with any other government officials.
