Five people were arrested this week for their roles in an Internet ticket scam that left thousands of fans without the festival passes they had paid for. London's Metropolitan Police swooped into three homes and one business on Tuesday night, arresting four men and a woman. All were thought to be connected with Xclusive Tickets Ltd and Xclusive Leisure and Hospitality Ltd – xcrable, xtremely nefarious organisations that claimed to sell tickets to events like the V and Reading festivals, and even the Beijing Olympic Games, but who allegedly ran off with the cash. More than 4,000 fans were conned, according to the Serious Fraud Office (SFO). The scam was carried out on websites such as bejingticketing.com – non-official ticket brokers that event organisers had warned fans against using. After receiving payment for more than 4,000 tickets, the Xclusive companies were placed into liquidation, the SFO said, essentially disappearing. Authorities began their investigation after members of the public from more than 60 countries made complaints, claiming to have paid for tickets without receiving anything in return. Richard Alderman, director of the SFO, called on duped fans to get in touch with his office via an online form . The five suspects, aged between 41 and 54, were questioned and released on bail. An Internet scam has cost a 65-year-old Salina woman $170,000, an amount that police say may be the largest reported to be lost locally to scammers. Police said Monday that an individual the woman met on the Internet in September sent her what appeared to be a U.S. treasury check for $456,000. She was asked to deposit the check in her bank and wire a portion of the money back to her new friend. Deputy Police Chief Carson Mansfield said that she deposited the check at Bank of America in Salina on Oct. 4 and before it cleared, withdrew $170,000 to wire to England. About a month later, the $456,000 check came back as counterfeit. Mansfield said the woman did not have the funds to cover the loss. Said Mansfield: "Never wire money to anybody unless you know exactly what's going on. Once it's gone, it's gone." ...

I recently posted about this , regarding videogamers inexplicably spamming a moneymaking link to all their friends. The same site is being posted to everything from Reddit to Digg , and assuming this isn't the grandest "hack every type of account known to Man and post autospam from it" scam I've ever seen (which is unlikely), we have to draw one conclusion - half the Internet has taken leave of their senses in the mad rush to see some incredibly tame pictures of a semi-naked woman. It's a conclusion that has a fair amount of evidence lying around to back it up - here's an explanation from someone who posted it to a forum, only to have their original post edited by a Mod: Click to Enlarge "I'm just really shallow and want to see the rest". ...amazing that people are so eager to post this everywhere when if they really wanted to, they could see as much naked flesh as they want in about three seconds or less. Apparently it's easier to annoy your friends with spam and ruin your reputation on forums you've been on for a long time. Whoever came up with this idea must have a swimming pool filled with money. ...
