I dunno how long they've been there, but this week I've discovered several Arlo concerts on the Internet Archive, for your listening or downloading pleasure. The only drawback to the shows is that they're on one continuous track & many are too long to be burned to CD. There's a lotta nice stuff there, tho'---even some shows with Pete! ...

The Shinto and Japanese religions section of the Internet sacred text Archive presents key texts associated with Shinto as well as texts relating to other aspects of Japanese spirituality, beliefs and ethics: Buddhism, Confucianism, animism and folklore. There are also a number of Ainu folklore texts. All are originally written in or translated into English. The Shinto texts are: the Kojiki (full and abridged translations by Basil Hall Chamberlain); excerpts of the Nihongi (also known as the Nihon Shoki), translated by W.G. Ashton; the Yengishiki (Shinto rituals); and the Kogoshui: Gleanings from Ancient Stories, translated by Kenchi Gotō and Hikoshirō Hoshino. Texts under the Japanese Spirituality heading include: several books by Lafcadio Hearn (ghost stories and a history of Shinto); books by Kazuko Okakura on the tea ceremony and Japanese art and Buddhism; Inoze Nitobe's book on bushido, the samurai ethical code; Arthur Waley's translation of Noh plays; fairy tales; a collection of haiku; and the Hyakunin Isshū collection of tanka poetry. The Ainu texts are: transations of folk tales by Basil Hall Chamberlain and John Batchelor; Yukara, epos of the Ainu; and Arthur Waley's translation of the epic Kutune Shirka. ...

The Internet Archive is great, except that it doesn't necessary have the sites in that you want, nor does it necessarily update at the rate you'd like, and it certainly doesn't do the recent stuff. However, along comes iterasi which is a simple browser-based tool for saving any web page with the click of a button. The content is saved immediately—frozen in that moment in time—in an accessible HTML format and stored to a secure personal account. With iterasi, any web page can be saved, searched and shared anytime, from anywhere, forever. It's still in beta at the moment so I've not yet played with it, but I like the concept and will let you know what I think. ...

I am sad to report that the C-SPAN Video Library, a supposedly non-profit venture, is still less public than many for-profit video sharing websites, such as YouTube and Vimeo, because: C-SPAN does not allow you to embed its videos onto your blog or homepage. The link to the video, provided by C-Span video player, sends you [...] ...

I wrote a feature for this week's issue of the journal Nature on "petascale" data-centers -- giant data-centers used in scholarship and science, from Google to the Large Hadron Collider to the Human Genome and Thousand Genome projects to the Internet Archive. The issue is on stands now and also available free online. Yesterday, I popped into Nature's offices in London and recorded a special podcast on the subject, too. This was one of the coolest writing assignments I've ever been on, pure sysadmin porn. It was worth doing just to see the the giant, Vader-cube tape-robots at CERN. At this scale, memory has costs. It costs money — 168 million Swiss francs (US$150 million) for data management at the new Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, the European particle-physics lab near Geneva. And it also has costs that are more physical. Every watt that you put into retrieving data and calculating with them comes out in heat, whether it be on a desktop or in a data centre; in the United States, the energy used by computers has more than doubled since 2000. Once you're conducting petacalculations on petabytes, you're into petaheat territory. Two floors of the Sanger data centre are devoted to cooling. The top one houses the current cooling system. The one below sits waiting for the day that the centre needs to double its cooling capacity. Both are sheathed in dramatic blue glass; the scientists call the building the Ice Cube. Blank slate The ...
