It is the ultimate " some assembly required " gadget. Silently orbiting the Earth at a speed of 17,200 mph and altitude of 220 miles , the International Space Station is either an amazing scientific platform for experimentation or an out-of-the-world financial boondoggle--take your pick, though the smart money is on the latter. Nowadays we mostly see the ISS when astronauts are adding some new piece, or fixing an old one. Its exterior starkly bright with no atmosphere to soften the light, the astronauts wield their screwdrivers and wrenches as the Earth majestically passes below. The TV pictures are astounding, but after the anchor's voiceover explains what's being done, the Space Station again passes out of our collective consciousness. Out of sight, out of mind. For most places on Earth, there's no need to wait for TV to see the ISS. If it's flying over your house, you can see it! There's no detail from 220 miles, but it will be visible. Over the years, I've sent dozens of people to look and every one has come back with an experience more meaningful than what you'd expect from tracking a dot across the sky. In order to get a glimpse, you need the right set of conditions. Your viewing point should be in darkness. The ISS should be lit by the Sun on the side visible to you. These visible passes can run from a few seconds to five minutes or more. The Space Station will take an arc through the sky. Because it must be in sunshine fo ...

CDR Volkov & FE-1 Kononenko spent most of their workday with equipment preparations in the DC1 'Pirs' Docking Compartment for the second Orlan EVA (#20) on 7/15. In the Lab, the FE-2 (Chamitoff) serviced the US OGS (Oxygen Generation System), removing the PWR (Payload Water Reservoir) from in front of the WDS (Water Delivery System) and replacing it with a filled PWR. Like the Russian Elektron, OGS produces O2 from water by electrolysis, dumping the also generated H2 (hydrogen) through venting. - NASA ...

The Heads of the International Space Station (ISS) Agencies from Canada, Europe, Japan, Russia and the United States met today at ESA Headquarters in Paris, France, to review ISS cooperation. As part of their discussions, they noted the significantly expanded capability the ISS now provides for on-orbit research and technology development activities and as an engineering test-bed for flight systems and operations critical to future Space exploration initiatives. These activities improve the quality of life on Earth by expanding the frontiers of human knowledge. Joint Statement by the International Space Station Heads of Agency ...

Now this is a cool idea: Strap rockets and a steering system to the International Space Station and send it to the Moon. Is this an insane plan? Up till yesterday I would have said yes, in fact before yesterday I hadn’t thought of the idea. Then I read the Washington Post online and find [...] ...
