This past week, I've been asking TPM staffers to write up their summer reading picks. Below, some of our superb interns weigh in. Lakshmi: I read Carl Sferrazza Anthony's wonderful biography of Florence Harding last summer and I plan to continue going down the First Lady route by checking out Sylvia Morris's Edith Kermit Roosevelt: Portrait of a First Lady. Also on my list is the young adult novel Child of Dandelions by Shenaaz Nanji, the story of an Asian Indian girl who fled Uganda with her family after Idi Amin issued his 1972 order expelling all Asians from the country. Matt: For summer reading this year I am mostly just catching up on some Cafe books, Nixonland and Standard Operating Procedure in particular. As a nice beach book, I've also tossed Gravity's Rainbow in there, with some David Sedaris to boot. Dave: My friends and I formed a Thomas Pynchon Book Club, with our first (only?) selection being Gravity's Rainbow, without a doubt the most frustrating and rewarding book I have ever picked up. I'm not even going to try and describe it's madness and perfection. For lighter reading, I'm going with essay books- Will Leitch's God Save The Fan (Crashing the Gates for sports is the best analogy), Keith Johnstone's Improv (techniques on improv comedy, but also great life advice) and Eudora Welty's On Writing (sharp). ... We are looking for volunteers/interns to assist us in the development of our digital library, through which we aim to offer humanitarian organisations all the expertise so far accumulated by numerous NGOs worldwide to help humanitarian staff create better programs. This means helping us go through a number of written documents, (in English, as well as French) which we intend to place in the digital library, writing abstracts and summaries for each one. This also involves placing the summaries in a database, and later corresponding with the authors for permission to place their articles in the CHP digital library. The recent trend of folks choosing efficiency over size in the new-car market isn’t without benefit to a few people. What am I (a humble Intern) talking about? My sweet, slightly used 2006 Hyundai Accent with an automatic transmission and air conditioning, of course. If you haven’t figured out my plan yet, I’m trying to sell the thing and am using KickingTires as a selfish plug to do so. Here’s my angle: Automakers are having trouble producing enough hybrids for people looking to save on gas, so those out-of-luck people should come groveling to me for this Korean jewel. The new Accents’ sales were up 70% in June, so I figure it should be a slam dunk making money on my 2006. Aside from my assumptions, though, has the current crisis really turned small cars into gold and my baby Accent into an investment? Kelley Blue Book executive editorial director Jack R. Nerad says think again. “What we have seen is that used cars are continuing to depreciate,” he said, though he did say that large SUVs and cars are deprecating at a greater rate. Smaller used cars are still losing their value, just at a lesser rate than gas-guzzlers. Though it’s harder to track across-the-board sales of used cars, fewer people are buying them, matching the trend of falling new-car sales. “The general thinking is that if less people are buying new then they must be buying used, but we found that isn’t the case,” Nerad said.
