Jensen Lewis pitched like Francisco Rodriguez to make sure Los Angeles' closer never got a chance. Lewis worked out of a ninth-inning jam for his third save to help the Cleveland Indians beat the Angels 4-3 in the deciding game of a three-game series Sunday. It was the Angels' first series loss to an AL opponent since a three-game sweep in Tampa Bay from May 9-11. They hadn't lost any series since dropping two of three Interleague games to the Los Angeles Dodgers from June 27-29. ...

It wasn't a spectacular victory, the Cowboys hanging on at the end, but their 23-22 win over Houston brings the prestigious Governor's Cup to Dallas. The Rangers may not have dominated the Astros, splitting their Interleague series 3-3. But run differential, based largely on a 16-8 Texas win, gave the Rangers the Silver Boot. We're hot. Why stop there? The Mavericks endured the type of season that gets a head coach fired. Along the way, however, they took the series from the Rockets, 3-1. There is no official trophy for this. Insiders realize however that this earned the Mavs the Sefko Mug. We rule. Cheers. --Tim Cowlishaw ...

The Cubs haven't lost a series at Wrigley Field since June, when the Baltimore Orioles took two of three in an Interleague meeting. That's what makes the series finale tonight against the St. Louis Cardinals more than critical after a 12-3 pounding Saturday against staff ace Carlos Zambrano (12-5). ...

Right-hander Roy Oswalt faces his all-time favorite opponent when his Houston Astros visit Great American Ball Park tonight for the first of four weekend games with the Cincinnati Reds. Oswalt enters the game with a remarkable 20-1 career mark against the Reds in 25 games (23 starts), including a 5-4 victory on July 28 at Minute Maid Park in Houston. The 30-year-old Mississippi native has given up 137 hits and 47 runs in 162 innings against the Reds, while striking out 139 Cincinnati batters. He's also unbeaten in four overall starts since a 3-2 Interleague loss at Texas on June 25. In that stretch, Oswalt is 2-0 and has allowed 20 hits and nine runs in 18 innings. Cincinnati right-hander Josh Fogg tries for a second win in six appearances since returning from a stint on the disabled list tonight. ...

For one weekend, the Washington Nationals managed to resemble a decent baseball team, an achievement made possible with the help of the stumbling Cincinnati Reds. The Nationals completed only their second sweep of the year Sunday, jumping ahead with a four-run first inning in a 4-2 victory that followed a Reds' players-only meeting. Rookie Collin Balester (2-3) allowed one run in 5 1-3 innings and Lastings Milledge hit his ninth home run for the Nationals, who were mired in a nine-game losing streak before outscoring the Reds 19-10 over three games. Austin Kearns had three hits against his former team. Not counting a win in a one-game series with Atlanta on opening day, the Nationals now have two sweeps - both against fellow last-place teams. They took three in a row in Seattle during an Interleague series in June. The Reds lost for the eighth time in nine games and fell to a season-worst 10 games under .500, having failed to gain any noticeable edge from a 20-minute players' meeting prior to batting practice. Cincinnati committed three errors and failed to hold a four-run lead in Saturday night's 10-6 loss, and another error lead to an unearned run in Washington's big first inning Sunday. ...

Jeremy Sowers and two relievers cooled off Los Angeles' lineup and the Cleveland Indians handed the Angels a rare series loss, winning the deciding game of a three-game series 4-3 on Sunday. It was the Angels' first series loss to an AL opponent since a three-game sweep in Tampa Bay from May 9-11. They hadn't lost any series since dropping two of three Interleague games to the Los Angeles Dodgers from June 27-29. Sowers (2-6) gave up eight hits but only two earned runs over 6 2-3 innings for his first win in five starts. He again struggled in the first inning, allowing two runs. In 15 starts, Sowers has given up 15 runs in the opening inning. The left-hander earned his first home win in 13 starts at Progressive Field since beating Detroit on Aug. 25, 2006. Rafael Perez struck out three over 1 1-3 perfect innings and Jensen Lewis gave up two hits in the ninth, but earned his third save. ...

The Cleveland Indians try to hand the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim a rare series loss this afternoon, when the teams play the rubber match of a three-game series against them at Progressive Field. Los Angeles, which owns baseball's best record at 76-45 and is comfortably 15 1/2 games in front of the Texas Rangers in the American League West, hasn't lost a series to an AL team since getting swept by Tampa Bay from May 9-11 and is 16-0-4 in its last 20 series against the Junior Circuit. However, the Halos did drop a pair of Interleague sets in that time. After winning the opener of this series on Friday, Cleveland missed out on its chance to capture this set yesterday. Anaheim's Vladimir Guerrero knocked in two runs and the Angels took advantage of four Indians errors on their way to a 4-3 win. ...

A 25-year-old former 27th-round draft choice (2004), Sanchez last won on June 29 when he defeated the Oakland Athletics in an Interleague game, 11-1. He is 0-4 with a pair of no-decisions since, allowing 32 hits and 23 runs in 26 innings while the Giants have gone 0-6. In his last start on August 5 against Atlanta, Sanchez was touched for seven hits and three runs in five innings of an 11-4 loss to the Braves in San Francisco. Asdrubal Cabrera homered, then doubled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as the Cleveland Indians beat the Baltimore Orioles 13-8 Monday night for their fourth straight victory. The Indians took an early 5-0 lead but fell behind 8-7. Cleveland scored three times in the seventh, and Ben Francisco and Andy Gonzalez homered in the eighth. Cabrera and four teammates each drove in two runs as the Indians opened a 10-game homestand. The matchup of last-place teams marked the first time Cleveland and Baltimore had met since May 7, 2007 - the Indians played 12 Interleague games against Cincinnati over that span. ...

Detroit lefty Nate Robertson will try to snap an eight- start winless skid today, when the Tigers host the Oakland Athletics in the finale of a three-game weekend set at Comerica Park. Robertson, who won 13 games in 2006 and nine more last season, was 6-6 after a 7-5 Interleague defeat of San Diego on June 21, but has since gone 0-2 with six no-decisions and has seen his earned run average rise from 5.60 to 6.11. The Tigers are 3-5 in his last eight appearances. ...

The Cleveland Indians try to hand the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim a rare series loss this afternoon in the middle test of a three-game series at Progressive Field. Los Angeles, which owns baseball's best record at 75-45 and is comfortably 15 1/2 games in front of the Texas Rangers in the American League West, hasn't lost a series to an AL team since getting swept by Tampa Bay from May 9-11 and is 16-0-4 in its last 20 series against the Junior Circuit. However, the Halos did drop a pair of Interleague sets in that time. The Angels found themselves on the losing end in the opener of this set on Friday, though, as the Indians' Cliff Lee won his AL-leading 17th game of season with his third complete game of the year in Cleveland's 3-2 win. Lee (17-2), who induced four double plays from the Angels, improved to a perfect 7-0 at Progressive Field this season. The lefty scattered eight hits, two walks and a pair of runs while fanning six. Jhonny Peralta had two doubles and an RBI and Shin-Soo Choo was 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Indians, who have won six of their last eight. ...

The Milwaukee Brewers switched from the American League to the National League before the 1998 season. Eleven seasons is a long baseball career, so I figured there couldn't be that many pitchers around this year that were in MLB when the Brewers were an AL team. Of those active pitchers, even fewer had a chance to pitch against the AL Brewers since Interleague play was around for only one year of the Brewers' AL tenure. I starting thinking about this, of course, after learning that Tanyon Sturtze is back in the major leagues. Sturtze started the first game of a doubleheader against the AL Brewers on August 18, 1997 , losing to a lineup including Julio Franco, Brian Banks, and Gerald Williams. He later made two appearances against the NL Brewers in 2005, as a member of the Yankees. Below is the list of pitchers who pitched against the AL Brewers and have appeared in the majors in 2008. I've noted the guys who faced the Crew only in 1997 Interleague play: Armando Benitez Joe Borowski Doug Brocail Chris Carpenter Bartolo Colon Alan Embree Kelvim Escobar (injured this year) Scott Eyre Keith Foulke Tom Gordon Eddie Guardado LaTroy Hawkins Randy Johnson Todd Jones Jon Lieber (1997 Interleague play) Esteban Loaiza (1997 Interleague play) Derek Lowe Ron Mahay Kent Mercker Brian Moehler Jamie Moyer Mike Mussina Darren Oliver Andy Pettitte Troy Percival Arthur Rhodes Mariano Rivera Kenny Rogers Glendon Rusch Curt Schilling Jason Schmidt (1997 in ...

The strangest thing happened in that bandbox the Phillies call a park:  The Marlins  didn't hit a home run . Take your pick as to the more amazing aspect of this week's series against the  Phillies : That the  Marlins  failed to hit a home run in one of the most home run-friendly parks in baseball or that they did so and still won two of three. The Phillies became the first team this season to keep the Marlins in the park for an entire three-game series. It hadn't happened since June 12-14, 2007, when the Indians did not allow a homer during their Interleague visit to  Dolphin Stadium . Now that could be due to the Marlins maturing as hitters and taking what is given instead of coming out their shoes every time they swing.  Or it could be that the Marlins most prolific home run hitters, Uggla and Ramirez, are mired in a bit of a slump since the All-Star break, which they are. You decide. But it is nice to know that the Fish can find other ways to win other than the blast.  That could come in handy later on.  But if they want to hit the Earl Weaver style three-run homers again, I can live with that too. Just as along as they win. ...

{I'm gonna beat 75 words with this one, for certain!} Plot Brief: Developing into a Next-Generation comedy along the lines of Mad, Mad World, Halos Heave collectively brings to you the current status of our Off-Day Project in Progress: Switch Hitter. After a quick shotgun marriage (never consumated), the wife takes off with a midget Elvis impersonator and later ships back his son via UPS. (somebody) co-stars as a spoiled, arrogant, abusive man-eater who has gotten away with everything she wanted for far too long, culminating in talking her way onto the cheer squad for the local Major League Baseball team, the Angels. One day, through divine intervention, these two encounter one another in a disastrous accident wherein their souls are swapped. As they attempt to restore themselves to their normal state, they must contend with the world that each created around them, while attempting to halt the catastrophes that ensue during an important series to claim the American League pennant. A four-game sweep would be almost as delicious as the Corn Dogs at the Iowa State Fair. I missed most of yesterday's game waiting in line for one. Sunday's Win Expectancy Graph Sunday's BR Box Score Saturday's Win Expectancy Graph Saturday's BR Box Score Friday's Win Expectancy Graph Friday's BR Box Score How back-and-forth was yesterday's game? Check out the front page at BR and scroll down. Three of the five biggest plays in all of baseball yesterday happened in the last six innings of yesterday's game. Tom H. gives a lot of credit , as we all should, to Mike Rivera, who started for just the 12th time all year, but still got on base 5 times yesterday. Of course, after the game the Brewers continued to commit the most heinous atrocity in the history of organized sport: they untucked their shirts . Ryan Braun isn't feeling any better. I'm just hoping his sore back doesn't have anything to do with the time he's been spending with Marisa Miller . CC Sabathia has already thrown 57 innings as a Brewer, but has allowed just 40 hits . I thought that was worth noting. So apparently Catfish Stew tracks the Heavyweight Champion of Baseball . The process seems pretty simple: 2008 started with the Red Sox as champions, and anyone who beats the champions takes over the crown. During Interleague play the title passed over to the NL via the Mets, and now the Brewers have it. I don't think a parade is planned. The Brewers rank 8th in Phil Roger ...
