Hi all, I'd like to monitor internet usage on my LAN without having to install software on each client. To do so, I believe I need one computer to act as a gateway. That said - is Internet Connection Sharing the only option for me? my kit: Router: TP-LINK tl-wr642G Access Point: TP-LINK tl-wr543G (repeater mode) Modem: Netgear DM111P PC: Vista HP-SP1; Intel Core @ duo @ 2.2Ghz; 2gb ram Adapter 1: Realtek rtl8169/8110 (motherboard native) Adapter 2: D-Link DFE530TX (PCI) other pcs: several laptops, vista HP & XP SP2 my goal: I'd like to monitor bandwidth on my LAN. Bandwidth Controller looks like a good place to start, I note it can function in "distributed mode"; however "gateway mode" is my preferred option for different reasons. Currently all clients access the internet through the router. The PC listed above is the only client connected via ethernet, all others connect wirelessly. Thinking this would be far easier I bought the second adapter (d-link) and plugged the modem into that, thinking I could simply bridge that with the realtek adapter which is plugged into the router. I soon discovered that Internet Connection Sharing might be involved, and after reading a little about it, I find that its usage is discouraged where other options are available. My question (in short): with the hardware I have, what is the easiest way I can monitor bandwidth on my LAN without having to install software on every client? (i dont need it step by s ... Looking to replace my computer the first of the year, but it could be sooner if mine would go suddenly. Just planning ahead, because I won't be able to go on line and research things if mine dies. I plan to do heavy photo editing, and don't want to end up with a computer that won't handle it. I also don't want to spend money on something I won't be benefiting from either. Building our own is not an option. Would like your thoughts, please.
