Filed under: Handhelds Intel's been making a lot of noise about MIDs for a while now, but we're going to guarantee that the entire category flops if this first wave of pricing info is accurate. Autralian importer Tegatech's got the Gigabyte M528 up for pre-order, and while we're intrigued by the 800MHz Atom processor, 512MB of RAM, and 8GB SSD, we're certainly not willing to pay AU$1199 ($1131) to satisfy our curiosity -- especially since the Linux build was so half-baked when we played with this thing at CeBIT. Of course, this isn't official pricing (and it's actually dropped from AU$1549 since we first saw the listing), but let's hope this is even more inaccurate than usual, eh? PC Gamer's Logan Decker managed to course through the offerings at online hardware retail sites and learned that some price tags for certain Intel processors have dipped. Nay, strike that - the tag nose-dived a good amount from the original price, and in some cases, even up to 50 . According to him, prices for Intel's Core 2 Quad Q6700 (2.66 GHz @ 4 cores) quaddie dropped from a hefty US 530 to just US 266, about as much as you could have gotten a Q6600 for (a few months back). True enough, the Q6600 (2.4 GHz @ 4 cores) itself had 42 bucks lopped off the top (now at US 224), while the much cheaper dual core E6850 (3.0 GHz @ 2 cores) rests at a tear-inducing US 183. Sorry, no QX's here . These numbers are based on 1,000 unit, priced orders, so essentially the amount would play close to - if not two dozen smackeroos above - the prices we stated earlier. These prices happen to be reflected in the updates selling threads all over Newegg.com, so expect a good amount of haggling and price dip competition. We'll keep you updated on further developments - especially if AMD answers back with a Phenom price stunt of their own. ...

While basic features of Intel’s next-generation desktop platform based on code-named Bloomfield processors are commonly known, more precise, but still rather general, specifications were kept under wraps. Apparently, the chipset that will enable Intel’s forth-coming high-end platform is called Intel X58 and will support one physical central processing unit (CPUs) as well as up to four graphics processing units (GPUs). According to slides, which resemble those that come from Intel Corp., published by Expreview web-site, Intel’s next-gen high-end desktop Intel X58 chipset will consist of X58 PCI Express bridge as well as ICH10 input/output controller hub. The X58 is projected to feature four PCI Express 2.0 memory controllers to support two graphics cards with two PCIe 2.0 x16 slots or four graphics cards with four PCIe 2.0 x8 slots. Intel's test and assembly plant in Chengdu remained offline on Tuesday, as the region in southwestern China reeled from the effects of a devastating earthquake that struck on Monday afternoon. Chinese officials put the death toll from the quake at nearly 10,000 on Tuesday morning, according to China's official Xinhua News Agency. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake -- which shook buildings in far-off Beijing and Bangkok -- had a magnitude of 7.5, while China's State Seismological Center measured a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter Scale. As initial reports of damage and casualties emerged from areas hit by the quake, Chinese soldiers and rescue workers were being rushed to the region to search for survivors trapped under rubble and deliver relief supplies, Xinhua said. The epicenter of the quake was close to Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province and one of the most important economic centers in southwestern China. Power and water supplies around the city were cut off by the quake. A lack of power and transmission problems rendered 2,300 base stations inoperable, taking down the city's mobile telephone network. As buildings shook in Chengdu, people poured into the streets. Workers at plants operated by Intel and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC), the country's largest chip maker, were evacuated and production came to a halt after the quake on Monday. Intel employs around 1,600 workers at a test ...

Contrary to what you may have read elsewhere, AMD has not added anything new to its antitrust charges against Intel - just some color - mostly black redactions - even after riffling through the 145 million pages of discovery that Intel turned over to it. According to AMD, 'Intel has made sure that the written record tells little of the story.' The case has now reached the deposition stage and what's new this week is the revelation that AMD wants the right to take 48 times more depositions than the federal standard allows. ...

I’ve been reading information lately about NVIDIA’s claim of a significant departure coming from the traditional role of the CPU as the powerhouse heart of a computer system. NVIDIA’s CEO, Jen-Hsen Huang, believes very strongly that a paradigm shift is coming, one which will render a central CPU, no matter how many cores it [...] ...
