eldavojohn writes "Everyone's got their favorite theories of Dinosaur extinction, but new speculation is rampant in a book that gives cause to believe it may have been disease-carrying Insects. Due to the length of their slow and eventual extinction (the 'K-T Boundary'), it is argued that this would more likely be attributed to the spread of disease and the rise of parasitic Insects like ticks or biting flies. Are our immune systems the only reason any animals survived?" Read more of this story at Slashdot. ...

Typhoon restaurant describes itself this way: "From our glass-encased main dining room located on the south side of the Santa Monica Airport, showcasing an unobstructed view of the setting sun over the Pacific to the west, and Century City to the east." Then there are the scorpions in the kitchen. The Times' Amy Scattergood went to a fancy Santa Monica restaurant and ate some Insects: "Over the weekend, I took my visiting father and my two kids to Typhoon , the restaurant at the Santa Monica airport that serves, among other things, Insects.  This was not to gross out the kids, but to illustrate a point of family history. When I was little, my dad went through a phase when he'd bring home tins of exotic stuff like escargots, frogs' legs and chocolate-covered ants — not to make us eat them, but for the entertainment value.  So I ordered a plate of scorpions on toast, another of crickets with stir-fried garlic and julienned potatoes." No question this one’s a stretch (pun intended), but how could I pass up an opportunity to connect pest control with the Olympics? Thankfully, Barry Murray -- as in “Barry The Bug Guy,” national spokesman for pest control company, Truly Nolen, –- already did. In his blog, Barry lobbies for a Bug Olympics, given Insects’ remarkable abilities, which he compares to those of Olympians. Fleas are outstanding jumpers and Cicadas, Barry says, are “the world champions of noise making.” Barry’s even found a way to link bugs to swimmer Michael Phelps, who has already won six gold medals in his quest for eight in Beijing. Barry went in search of a golden insect and found Edgar Allan Poe’s story, The Gold Bug . I’ll go one step further and bring this full circle: Phelps is from Baltimore, which is where Poe lived and is buried. ...

clipped by: coonhnd clipper's remarks: Great macro pics! Clip Source: www.funniez.net Insects in the morning dew Carnivorous Insects often have to get their water from somewhere other than their prey, and often they'll go to plants for their water too, drinking from fruit maybe. Or they might sip from the morning dew or from raindrops or from edges of ponds or puddles. Tags: Insects , macro , pics , photography ...

clipped by: William Hung Clip Source: www.divinecaroline.com Giant Walking Stick Goliath Beetle Atlas Moth Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing Clip Source: www.divinecaroline.com Giant Weta Chinese Mantis Giant Dragonfly Giant Burrowing Cockroach Giant Water Bug Clip Source: www.divinecaroline.com I’m a wimp when it comes to bugs. So when an exceptionally large grasshopper made its way onto my blanket recently as I was lounging at the park, I was a little surprised that I didn’t have a panic attack. But this particular grasshopper was beautiful, and his features were so large that it felt like he was actually staring at me, willing me to strike up a conversation with him. Though he eventually hopped away, I couldn’t stop thinking about his gigantic body, so I did some research online to find out if my grasshopper was as big as I thought he was. Turns out, he’s a bit of a pipsqueak compared to some of these giant Insects. Though I can appreciate the beauty and grandeur of these Insects, I’m thankful that none of them landed on my blanket that day. Tags: big bugs ...

Japanese beetle numbers have reached their peak in Missouri, but high numbers of other leaf- and pod-feeding pests threaten late-planted corn and soybean, said Wayne Bailey, University of Missouri Extension entomologist. Fall armyworm numbers are 'very high' in corn and sorghum; corn earworms are migrating from corn to soybeans; and bean leaf beetles are 'extremely high' in parts of the state. Fall armyworms prefer soybean or sorghum to the tassel and will almost always leave the corn plant. ...

Death is often the domain of terror, darkness and torment but as these images would suggest there is also a surreal beauty captured, even for a split second, when the end finally comes. It takes a patient and talented photographer to capture images such as these. Look on while a young frog is striped to the bone by an army of spiders, never to be a prince. ...
