Related Articles Effects of single and multiple applications of mosquito Insecticides on nontarget arthropods. J Am Mosq Control Assoc. 2008 Jun;24(2):270-80 Authors: Davis RS, Peterson RK Mosquito management plans have been implemented in the United States and globally to manage mosquito vectors of West Nile virus and many other diseases. However, there is public concern about ecological risks from using Insecticides to manage mosquitoes. Two studies were conducted during the late summers of 2004 through 2006 at Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge near Great Falls, MT. The first experiment was conducted in 2004 and 2005 to assess acute impacts of mosquito adulticides (permethrin and d-phenothrin) and larvicides (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis and methoprene) on nontarget aquatic and terrestrial arthropods after a single application. The second experiment was conducted in 2005 and 2006 to assess longer-term impacts of permethrin on nontarget terrestrial arthropods after multiple repeated applications. For aquatic samples, in the first study, no overall treatment effects were observed despite a potentially deleterious effect on amphipods on sample date 1 in 2004. During the same study, 1 of 54 responses had a significant overall treatment effect for sticky-card samples. Many of the responses for sticky-card samples suggested significant time effects and time x treatment effects. Three response variables were associated with fewer i ...

Related Articles The relation between urinary metabolite of pyrethroid Insecticides and semen quality in humans. Fertil Steril. 2008 Jun;89(6):1743-50 Authors: Xia Y, Han Y, Wu B, Wang S, Gu A, Lu N, Bo J, Song L, Jin N, Wang X OBJECTIVE: To explore the possible association between internal exposure levels of 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA), an urinary metabolite of pyrethroids, and altered semen quality in Chinese men. DESIGN: A retrospective case-control study. SETTING: Center of clinical reproductive medicine. PATIENT(S): Three hundred seventy-six men with nonobstructive infertility. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Urinary 3-PBA concentration, semen volume, sperm concentration, sperm number per ejaculum, sperm motility, sperm progression, and motion parameters. RESULT(S): The median 3-PBA concentration was 0.879 microg/g of creatinine. There was suggestive association between increased creatinine-adjusted 3-PBA quartiles and sperm concentration (odd ratios for the first, second, third, and fourth quartiles were 1.00, 1.31, 1.73, and 2.04, respectively), whereas sperm volume, sperm number per ejaculum, and sperm motility were weakly or nonsignificantly associated with 3-PBA quartiles. The sperm progression and motion parameters associated with creatinine-adjusted 3-PBA levels were straight line velocity (VSL) and curvilinear velocity (VCL). CONCLUSION(S): These observed associations between 3-PBA levels and some altered semen quality indicate ...

Related Articles Susceptibility of immature stages of Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti; vector of dengue and chikungunya to Insecticides from India. Parasitol Res. 2008 Apr;102(5):907-13 Authors: Tikar SN, Mendki MJ, Chandel K, Parashar BD, Prakash S Susceptibility of Aedes aegypti to some Insecticides in different geographic areas was conducted during dengue and chikungunya outbreak. At present, the only method of preventing dengue and chikungunya is to control the vector, which is the weakest link in vector-borne diseases. In our study, the susceptibility of A. aegypti collected from urban areas of Delhi, Mumbai, Jodhpur, Chennai and Coimbatore was evaluated against temephos, fenthion, malathion and DDT. The A. aegypti from different locations exhibited 0.33-7.11, 0.36-3.00, 0.65-2.84 and 2.16-20.8 fold more lethal concentration value of 50% (LC50) to temephos, fenthion, malathion and DDT, respectively, compared to susceptible reference strain. The result reveals that A. aegypti from various locations studied are still susceptible to temephos, fenthion and malathion, whereas low level of DDT resistance was noticed in field-collected A. aegypti. Amongst the Insecticides tested, temephos was found to be relatively more effective in controlling A. aegypti, followed by fenthion, malathion and DDT. More than a quarter of all significant pesticide-related health problems reported to the U.S. EPA in 2007 involved a class of Insecticides deemed safe by the agency, says a new report from the Center for Public Integrity. Naturally occurring pyrethrins and their synthetic counterpart, pyrethroids, have been touted as safe alternatives to nasty organophosphates . In the past decade, they have increasingly shown up in pet shampoos, roach killers, carpet cleaners, and more. EPA data for 2007 reflect 1,030 reported incidents involving pyrethrins and pyrethroids -- more than any other class of insecticide -- compared to 261 in 1998. CPI "uncovered this public-safety issue through more than a dozen Freedom of Information Act requests and crunching the data," says CPI's Bill Buzenberg. "This should be basic public information if the EPA were doing its job." Indeed, the EPA had planned to study the health effects of pyrethrins and pyrethroids in 2010, but now plans to expedite that research. sources:  Center for Public Integrity , Lancaster New Era , Minnesota Public Radio , The Guardian straight to the report:  Perils of the New Pesticides ...
