Database provider InfoGROUP Inc. said Tuesday it has removed founder Vin Gupta as chairman, citing excessive corporate expenditures and expense reimbursements. The changes are the result of an internal investigation, which came in response to an ongoing Securities and Exchange Commission investigation and a shareholder lawsuit. Gupta will continue to serve as chief executive officer of the company, which used to be named InfoUSA. The company also said Gupta has "orally agreed" with the Board of Directors' Special Litigation Committee to pay InfoGROUP $9 million. According to a news release, the payment is subject to a settlement agreement and court approval, but it's not clear if it is referring to settlement of the shareholders lawsuit. Calls to Gupta and company media representatives late Tuesday weren't immediately returned. The Omaha company will also appoint a new chief financial officer, replacing Stormy Dean, who will be moved into a different position at InfoGROUP. ...

While multi-channel consumers spend nearly twice as much as their single channel counterparts on average, they are also more likely to purchase from multiple providers, according to a new study from Opinion Research Corporation, an InfoUSA company (NASDAQ:IUSA). Consumers who use more than a single channel to interact with an organization - for example, shopping online as well as in a company's store - also tend to spend more than those who rely on only one channel. ...

A few notes from a first review of the Clinton taxes: 1. There is more than $12.4 million in partnership income from Yucaipa Cos., the investment vehicle of Clinton billionaire buddy Ron Burkle (left). In 2007, there's another $2.75 million in partnership income that likely also comes from Yucaipa. But we don't have an actual return, and the Clinton information sheet doesn't say specifically that it's Yucaipa. 2. At least $800,000 in income from InfoUSA, owned by somewhat controversial Clinton friend Vin Gupta. 3. The Clintons' charitable giving (largely to their foundation) is impressive at $10 million. But the biggest chunk, $3 million, came last year, as she ran for president. They gave $2.5 million in 2004, $1.75 in 2005. 4. Also worthy of note: The returns list various investments in an entities with the name Quellos -- s/a Quellos Alpha Engine LP. Politico suggests this may connect to a somewhat notorious tax shelter promoter. ...

I said I’d comment after reading Bill Clinton’s 2,500 word critique of Todd Purdum’s Vanity Fair piece . I haven’t read it. Slate’s Jack Shafer has: “A tawdry, anonymous quote-filled attack piece,” the critique seethed, one that “repeats many past attacks on him, ignores much prior positive coverage, includes numerous errors, and ultimately breaks no new ground. It is, in short, journalism of personal destruction at its worst.” Shafer agrees that it’s tawdry — “but can any profile of the man… [linked with all these women ] …be anything but tawdry? — and he is highly critical of the “extravagant reliance on unnamed sources.” But, he says, “the Clinton critique races to irrelevancy after that.” What the Clinton letter fails to acknowledge is that his many questionable business dealings, all gathered here, make for an eye-opener for those who haven’t followed his adventures since the final days of his administration. There’s the Marc Rich pardon and Rich’s ex-wife’s $450,000 contribution to Clinton’s library fund, not to mention all the dubious donors to the William J. Clinton Presidential Foundation. There’s Clinton’s private-jet travel with investor Jeffrey Epstein, who was indicted on soliciting prostitution charges in Florida. Don’t forget the $3 million in consulting fees he’s collected from InfoUSA, or the $15.5 million he’s earned from playboy magnate Ron Burkle, or Burkle’s investments in the Middle East. A whole book could b ...

InfoUSA announced that it is changing its name to infoGROUP, effective June 1. According to a press release, company brass feel the new name better represents the organization's expanding global presence and long-term business strategy. The company notes that many acquisitions, such as its Opinion Research buy, have effectively solidified InfoUSA as a global company and prompted an expansion of infoGROUP's research and database functions. infoGROUP, which is headquartered in Omaha, Neb., has offices in Canada, the U.K., Australia, India, Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai. The company plans to move into New Zealand and Ireland, as well as expand its current operations in Australia and other regions. It won't be surprising to see the company expand elsewhere over time, as this name change certainly demonstrates the company's commitment to further its presence across the globe. It might take a while for customers to become accustomed to the new name, but the decision to take such a big step is certainly understandable. InfoUSA has really been a global company for many years, but the name has definitely not reflected that. Branding is so key; and to be perceived as a global company in the marketplace, your identity has to very clearly communicate that. In that regard, a name like InfoUSA was limiting the company's the perception that it is a global company. ...
