narramissic writes "Back in January, a team of researchers uploaded a malicious program to Facebook to demonstrate the possible dangers of social networking applications. Called 'Photo of the Day,' the app serves up a new National Geographic photo daily, but every time it's clicked it sends a 600 K-byte HTTP request for images to a victim's Web site. Photo of the Day is still listed on Facebook, with its authorship attributed to Andreas Makridakis, one of the researchers. The application has 514 active users now, with several comments praising it. The study was published by the Foundation for Research and Technology in Heraklion, Greece, and the Institute for InfoComm Research in Singapore." Read more of this story at Slashdot. ... (Telecompaper) The OpenNet consortium has won the contract to build a nationwide broadband network in Singapore. The consortium will deliver an open fibre-to-the-home network, promising coverage for 95 percent of the population by 2012. The network will offer speeds of up to 1 Gbps for homes and businesses, backed by a government grant of SGD 750 million for infrastructure roll-out. The InfoComm Development Authority said the winning bid was supported by its quick timeline - ahead of an initial contract target of 2015 for full coverage - and SingTel's extensive duct network. SingTel, which holds a 30 percent stake in the consortium, will take the lead on network roll-out and also maintain the network. The incumbent operator has agreed to transfer certain passive infrastructure assets to a separate wholly-owned entity, AssetCo, within two years and reduce its stake in AssetCo within five years, as part of the conditions of the tender award. The network operator has also pledged wholesale access to the new network at SGD 15 per month for residential connections and SGD 50 for business lines. Network users will not have to pay for an initial connection to the network, and from 2013 the network oeprator will be subject to universal service requirements. The other members of OpenNet are Singapore Press (25%), SP Telecommunications (15%) and Axia NetMedia (30%). ... Source: www.proavmagazine.com --- 45 days ago
