Yahoo! News may be considered as a news organization, according to Jessica Barron , director of editorial programming. Unlike online news outlets that aggregate news content from the Web, Yahoo! is not only investing in its own journalists but is also signing agreements with wire services and "traditional" sources. "Our aim is to reach these bigger names and use our reporting talent to break news. We are really going for the kinds of questions that will make news," said Barron."We have been doing a lot of original reporting and we are going to be doing a lot more." The original reporting she refers to include interviews with South Korean president Lee Myung-bak , US leader George W. Bush and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice . Yahoo!'s global audience of 500 million helps to formulate its news judgement, since the outlet pays attention to what stories get most traffic. According to Barron, online readers have shown that they are interested in both hard facts and the human value of stories. Barron intends to make Yahoo! the premier Independent online news source. AP’s ethnography of news consumption By Ethan A media group in continuous operation since 1846 may not be the company you should look to for advice on the future of media. Or maybe they should: the Associated Press is both doing well in a digital age (when they’re not making boneheaded moves like pretending that fair use doesn’t exist ) and looking towards the future, trying to figure out its role in the media ecosystem. And they’re carrying out some very interesting research to determine just what their role is going forwards. Reading between the lines Trial by tabloid is never the fairest form of tribunal, an ...

Although WPP Group and its ad holding company rival Publicis Groupe have been concentrating more in Asia and other emerging markets for their digital acquisitions lately, it seems there are still a few Independent targets to be found in the U.S. One of the remaining ones was Seattle's PBJS, which was just picked up by Publicis. Terms weren't disclosed. The five-year-old shop concentrates on on "multichannel events" and branded entertainment, including webcasting and video production. The main thing that drew Publicis to PBJS was access to the agency's biggest client: Microsoft ( NSDQ: MSFT). That could bring more closeness between Microsoft and Publicis, which is working with the software giant, as well as Yahoo ( NSDQ: YHOO), Google ( NSDQ: GOOG) and AOL ( NYSE: TWX) on an open source ad network. The 26-person PBJS will continue to operate independently, though it will exist within Publicis Events Worldwide unit. Founder and CEO Bob Bejan will remain in that role, reporting to John Farrell, President & CEO of SAMS. Release (PDF) ...

Filed under: Management , Yahoo! (YHOO) , Scandals Capital Research Global Investors owns, with related but separately managed funds, around 16% of the outstanding shares of Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO ), and hasn't been too pleased with the leadership of CEO Jerry Yang. So it advised its funds to vote against reelecting him to the board of directors. Now the fund is puzzled that Yang managed to get 85% of the votes cast in election. Given that it meant to withhold its 16% stake from supporting Yang, it's concerned that -1% of the company's other shareholders did the same. Capital Research has hired Independent vote counter Broadridge Financial Solutions to take a look and try to figure out what happened. Yahoo was quick to defuse any conspiracy theories, issuing a statement saying that "Yahoo did not participate in the execution of the votes and was not a party to any errors which may have been made either by a voting institution or a proxy processing intermediary acting on behalf of banks, brokers and institutions." We won't know anything until the results of the Broadridge recount are made public but it sure seems like the shareholder support of Yahoo is less widespread than it seemed. That's understandable given the stock's dismal performance in recent years.   Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

Time Warner Inc. has finalized an internal reshuffle which leaves its AOL unit split and primed for a buy-out! The move will position the two AOL divisions as ripe pickings for the right suitors and the advertising section will be hot property for both Microsoft and Yahoo! AOL Business Divisions For Sale AOL has been separated into two distinctive business units; it's dial up access business and it's advertising and content business. The discrete units should make it easier for Time Warner to find suitable buyers for each. While the two units were combined, a potential acquisition was difficult as buyers struggled to find a proper fit for both parts of the AOL unit within their businesses. By splitting the two, Time Warner can now seek interest from separate buyers and potentially increase the yield from the sale. Both Yahoo! and Microsoft have quite publicly expressed interest in the AOL online advertising division, with Microsoft Execs visiting AOL HQ as recently as mid July. Whilst I initially thought that Microsoft would use an AOL acquisition to make a Yahoo! merger more attractive for Yahoo!'s shareholders - it looks like both companies might make Independent plays for AOL's online advertising and content unit. As I shared in our July post about Microsoft's interest , AOL represents about 11% of US online revenue and is valued at over US$8.3 billion. AOL sites generate over 56.5 million uniques per month - which is some serious tr ...
