Democrats will convene meetings of its Faith-Based Caucus at their convention next week in Denver in part to help to hammer home that their soon-to-be-nominee Barack Obama is a practicing Christian. Fueled by misinformation and smears that continue to fester on the Internet and talk radio, one in 10 Americans still wrongly believe Obama is a Muslim, recent polls have shown “Sen. Obama is a committed Christian, and he believes that people of all faiths have an important place in American life,” said Joshua Dubois, Obama’s director of religious affairs. “He’s proud to work with the Democratic National Convention Committee on a convention that fully engages people of faith in dialogue, celebration and prayer. We are honored that so many religious leaders are reaching across partisan and ideological lines in this Convention to address the values that matter to Americans.” The party hopes to cast itself as religion-friendly in Denver, and will include a multi-faith slate of clergymen and women to speak and lead prayers daily. There will also be discussions at the convention led by caucus members on topics like “How an Obama Administration will Engage People of Faith,” and “Getting Out the Faith Vote.” “Democrats have been, are and will continue to be people of faith – and this convention will demonstrate that in an unprecedented way,” said the DNCC’s Leah Daughtry. “As convention CEO and a pastor myself, I am incredibly proud that so many ... An eye-opening report reveals widespread belief that divine intervention can revive dying patients. And, researchers said, doctors "need to be prepared to deal with families who are waiting for a miracle." More than half of randomly surveyed adults 57 percent said God's intervention could save a family member even if physicians declared that treatment would be futile. And nearly three-quarters said patients have a right to demand such treatment. ... Source: lav.freedomblogging.com --- 13 days ago

Gov. Steve Beshear said he will seek legislation authorizing an "In God We Trust" auto license plate. Beshear wants the plates made optional, allowing Kentucky drivers to choose them as an alternative to the current "Unbridled Spirit" plates the state issues. The licenses would cost the same. Rep. Jim Gooch proposed such a license in the legislative session this year and it passed the House unanimously, but failed in the Senate. The Courier-Journal in Louisville reported that Transportation Secretary Joe Prather sent a letter on Monday, asking the chairmen of the House and Senate transportation committees to pass a similar bill next year. ... The third annual community-wide choir and orchestra Independence Day celebration, “In God We Trust,” will begin at 7:50 p.m. Saturday, July 5, at Pitney Field on the Hannibal-LaGrange College campus. “Bring a lawn chair or blanket and celebrate our nation’s birth,” invited Bryan Taylor, minister of music at Calvary Baptist Church, which is co-sponsoring the concert with Clover Road Christian Church. The nearly 80 musicians in this city-wide choir and orchestra represent seven area churches, according to Taylor, director of the choir. The musicians have been rehearsing for two months. This “family-friendly” free concert will have a God-centered theme, Taylor explained. “It is stirring music. We are doing a big ‘America the Beautiful’ and a big ‘National Anthem’ piece. “It is a very moving night,” Taylor added. “We honor the veterans and those in military now with a salute to the Armed Forces.” The audience will be invited to join in singing “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace.” “At the end we will have a big celebration piece and fireworks for 15 to 20 minutes,” Taylor said. The professional fireworks display at dusk will be presented by S&N Fireworks. It will be provided by Calvary Baptist. Free snow cones, popcorn and water will be provided by Clover Road church. With hundreds of people attending this holiday tradition, parking may be a distance from the soccer field, Taylor said, and anyone needing a ride will be transported ... (By Travis Jensen ) Local artist Andrew Schoultz has been busy gearing up for a big show entitled “In Gods We Trust” that opens Sep. 4 at the Marx Zavattero Gallery in SF, near Union Square. From the press release: "In Gods We Trust," Andrew Schoultz’s first solo exhibition at Marx & Zavattero in San Francisco, will be a tour de force encompassing an expansive group of two- and three-dimensional works. Against the backdrop of Schoultz’s densely painted mixed media paintings on panel and paper will be large-scale painted sculptures — including scales of justice, splintered telephone poles, and debris of broken bridges — installed throughout the gallery. Schoultz will create a frenzied walk-through experience, placing the viewer inside the work virtually as a participant, and translate his ideas into a theater of chaos that speaks to the multifarious global issues that plague the world today. "In Gods We Trust" opens on Thu., Sep. 4, 5:30p.m.-7:30p.m. Show runs all the way through Oct. 25. Marx Zavattero, 77 Geary Street (between Grant and Kearny streets), S.F.
