Alain Jacquet, a French pop artist known for his reinterpretations of famous Paintings, has died, the French Embassy said. Jacquet, who lived in New York and Paris, died of cancer Thursday at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, the embassy said in a statement. He was 69. Jacquet's work often reflected the sensibilities of pop art, which emerged in Britain and the United States in the 1950s and '60s and drew on advertising, comics and other pieces of popular culture. He also revisited well known artworks from previous eras. One of his best-known Paintings recasts the Impressionist giant Edouard Manet's "Dejeuner sur l'Herbe," which depicts a female nude picnicking with two fully clothed men. In Jacquet's version, they are replaced by a gallery owner, an art critic and a painter. He also based works on two other renowned nudes, Manet's "Olympia" and the neoclassical painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres' "La Source." Born Feb. 22, 1939, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, Jacquet had his first exhibition in France in 1961. Larry and Judy Pumfrey will present a two-person show entitled “Points of View” at the North Shore Arts Association through Oct. 24. The public is invited to a reception on Sunday, Oct. 12 from 2-4 p.m. Larry and Judy Pumfrey share their lives and their passion for art with each other. They appreciate the opportunities of a common interest and enjoy painting, teaching and critiquing art together. They particularly enjoy discussing art theory and reading books by artists that inspire them and promote ideas for seeing and feeling the visual qualities of an image. Larry Pumfrey is a painter in oil, acrylic, and watercolor with a special interest is in coastal harbor scenes and people actively enjoying their environment. He has been painting landscapes and portraits seriously since 1976. Today, Larry’s challenge is to paint what he feels rather than what he knows, not the subject matter itself but the colorful patterns of light and shadow that nature offers. Judy Pumfrey is a contemporary American Impressionist painter well known for the light and color qualities that permeate her work. They always used to think me such a strait-laced, even bourgeois little girl: a perfect English rose. But they shouldn't be so surprised because it was they who set me on the path that led to Dr Damon's door. And often, as I'm lying on his couch, sharing with him my innermost feelings about life and love and relating to him my dreams and fantasies, I often say a silent prayer of thanks to them. It is three months since the doctor and I first met. Our meeting resulted from a recommendation by a mutual acquaintance. Such is the doctor's esteem and so distinguished are his clients – he abhors the term 'patients' – that I was surprised that he wanted to see me. But he did, and soon each Wednesday's visit had become the keystone around which I built my week. I always arrive early for my session with the doctor. A visit to his consulting rooms is a joy in itself: the building is a sumptuous homage to an earlier age. The drawing room, which serves as the clients' waiting room, has a high vaulted ceiling, a magnificent fireplace, fine furniture and chairs so soft that one sinks into them. Impressionist Paintings adorn the walls and hand-woven silk curtains fringe the windows that look out onto a delightful courtyard. But more importantly than these ...
