Lundy Creek Cabin 5 x 7 oil study It was last fall when I started this small study of a cabin, closed for the winter, up Lundy Creek in the Eastern Sierra. But I put it aside for awhile as I thought about some changes I wanted to make with regard to the color temperature and how it affected the shadowed mountains and the brilliant fall leaves. As we arrived at the scene, the sun was close to the horizon and every moment brought color shifts and changing shadow patterns. This cabin, which seemed to be owned by the campground, was boarded up for the winter. The tin roof captured the cool light of the sky, which I liked a lot, seeing it contrasting with the golden colors of the trees. There are two pairs of complements working in this little study: red/green and yellow/violet. It was painted with red yellow and blue primaries and a little white - nice and simple. When I returned to this study to rework it a bit, I made some decisions about where I wanted the light to fall, and I like it much better now. This week, starting Wednesday, I will be painting in the Arroyo Seco for the Casita del Arroyo paint out and sale sponsored by the California Art Club and benefitting both the club and the Casita del Arroyo Foundation, with its beautiful display of drought tolerant plants. "A SLICE OF COLOR" 6x8 inch Impressionist Still Life Original Oil Painting by Tom Brown To purchase this painting email tombrownstudio@cox.net I always enjoy painting still life subjects. Especially something with stunning color like this. Today was somewhat rainy so I decided to stay in the studio and paint a still life rather than venture out to paint on location. I'll admit it; I'm a "fair weather" plein air painter. When rain threatens I prefer to stay indoors. My friendly neighbor gave me a branch from his orange tree to use in this composition. It added that special touch to the painting of oranges and the vase with blue and gold accents. This one was a pure joy to paint - and I stayed nice and dry too. Hope you like it. "A STREAK OF WHITE" 8x10 inch Acrylic Impressionist Daily Painting by Tom Brown For purchasing details email tombrownstudio@cox.net This is unusual for me - it's an acrylic painting and I am an oil painter. But in the past I had worked extensively in acrylics as well and I have a familiarity with those paints too. An artist friend who paints with acrylics asked for my help in trying to master my oil painting techniques in his own paintings while using acrylics. This is a demonstration painting I did for him while using his acrylic paints. A special focus in this lesson was how to soften edges of forms with these quick-drying paints. This is often a problem for acrylic painters, which was the case with my friend. In the detail image you can see how I used this technique where the white clouds meet the edge of the tree shapes. A soft edge here can help the eye move more easily from the shape of the tree into the sky and create greater unity within the overall painting. Another area where this was important was in the sky area itself where the soft white clouds disappear into the blue sky, as well as where the blue sky softly blends into the layer of subtle color toward the bottom the the detail image. I was pleased with the results in this acrylic painting and I thought it would be interesting to share it here with you. I feel like I'm beginning to roll again! Two layouts in two days! In this video lesson in the Subscriber Area, I challenge you to come up with some creative way to utilize the Impressionist Brush. I used it in my layout with stock photos that applied to the story that I did not want to be totally recognizable as people because they were not the actual people in the story. Can you use it for a background? Mat? Sticker? Tag? I'm anxious to see what you come up with! What will I think up for tomorrow? I hope I have time! I want to keep this ball rolling!
