As there is an increase in the Canadian labour market’s demand, Canadian employers are forced to frequently turn to the foreign labour pool to get experienced and qualified candidates, who are capable of taking up the positions in Canada. But, the problem is that there are many challenges in obtaining an initial work permit for a foreign worker and even bigger problem is that fact that it is more difficult to retain the foreign Workers in Canada because work permit cannot be renewed for indefinite period. The only options that are left are either the employee plays a scene form the movie “Green Card” (which is not recommended), or he or she legitimately marries a Canadian. Otherwise it is really very difficult for an employee to get obtain a permanent residence in Canada before the expiry of his or her work permit. And as a result of this, the employer, who invested in the training and developing of the employee, incurs loss. read more ... Source: www.newsvine.com --- 19 days ago

*300 suspected illegal immigrants caught in SC raid* By MITCH WEISS, Associated Press Writer GREENVILLE, S.C. - Federal agents detained more than 300 suspected illegal immigrants Tuesday in a raid at a chicken processing plant that has been under investigation for months. The raid took place during a shift change, when police and federal agents spread through the House of Raeford's Columbia Farms plant and ordered all Workers to show identification, according to officials and witnesses. Maria Juan, 22, was one of about 50 relatives and friends of Workers who huddled at the edge of the plant after the raid, some weeping and others talking frantically on cell phones. She was seeking information about her 68-year-old grandmother, a legal Immigrant from Guatemala who went to work without identification papers but was later released. "Families are going to be broken apart," Juan said. "There will be kids and babies left behind. Why are they doing this? Why? They didn't do anything. They only wanted to work." Immigration officials kept the Workers inside the plant and spent most of the morning trying to interview them and figure out how many are in the U.S. illegally, Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin McDonald said. The number could be large. A recent review found that immigration paperwork for more than 775 of 825 Workers contained false information, McDonald said. Immigration agents scoured the plant for paperwork and other information for th ... Source: www.huffingtonpost.com --- 8 days ago
This is the point in a presidential election cycle when the "battleground states" - those which are undecided and likely to be close for the rest of the contest - begin to take shape. That's in part because of state developments including "hot" state and congressional races and controversial ballot initiatives. The hot races and ballot initiatives are critical in that they help drive voters to the polls and may have an impact on which presidential candidate wins the state. Indeed, George W. Bush did as well as he did in some states during the 2000 and 2004 presidential because of the high turnouts attributed to the use of initiatives on gay marriage. Following is a breakdown of five battleground states that Senators John McCain and Barack Obama are fighting over. Virginia Virginia has 13 electoral votes and Obama has a slim lead of about two points in most polls. The race will be decided in the northern Washington, D.C. suburbs, where growth in the Immigrant population, coupled with large numbers of hyper-education government contractors and technology Workers have changed the demography of the region and made the state "bluer" in recent years. There is also economic anxiety as the western D.C. suburbs are choking under the force of foreclosure rates that rival some of the worst in the country. The hot race is for the 11th congressional district seat being vacated by Republican Representative Tom Davis, who is retiring. Gerry Con ... Source: weblogs.chicagotribune.com --- 39 days ago
