I was having a drink yesterday with E.J. Dionne and Todd Gitlin (I'm so liberal sometimes I actually scare myself) when E.J., who in another life probably wrote headlines for Joseph Pulitzer, suddenly, and apropos of nothing much, said of Sarah Palin, "She's a hockey imam!" This was, of course, pure genius. At first I was going to steal it, but we are in the intermediate days between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur, so no stealing. I was left with a problem, however: What does it, in fact, mean? We couldn't figure that one out; she's a fundamentalist, and so are many Imams? Hockey, of a sort, is big in Pakistan? She's a particularly judgmental hockey mom? No matter. I'm reasonably sure Palin will say something, to the extent that she says anything, in the coming days that will fit the label. ... W.D. Mohammed was the son of the founder of the Nation of Islam, Elijah Muhammad. After his father died, he took over and gradually shifted most of the membership into mainstream Islam. From 1998: In 1975, the lives of all three were turned upside down. John 5X was on a bus, on his way to celebrate the Nation's annual Savior's Day holiday in Chicago. As they approached the city, the news came on the radio: Elijah Muhammad was dead. The men on the bus spent the rest of the trip debating whether the news could be true or whether it was a story made up by whites. They soon discovered that the new leader of the Nation was Elijah's son. Like his protege, Malcolm X, W. Deen Mohammed had already begun to shift toward traditional Islam years earlier. And the new leader wasted no time in transforming the faith of his father's followers. In a matter of months, he ordered chairs to be removed from the worship areas and replaced by prayer rugs. He explained traditional Muslim prayer rituals to newly installed Imams who had never seen them practiced. For more than 50 years, federal rules have said a tax-exempt group that endorses a political candidate in public endangers its tax-exempt status. This Sunday, more than 30 pastors from around the country plan to challenge those rules. The aim is to force the IRS to enforce those rules so the ministers can get a case before the U.S. Supreme Court. Among those who’ll preach politics from the pulpit is Wiley Drake, the well-known conservative Christian minister from Buena Park. Drake told KPCC’s “Patt Morrison” that it’s wrong to restrict him from saying what he wants say to his congregation. Wiley Drake: “The church will not be endorsing anybody. The church can’t endorse. The church is an entity, not someone that can endorse. But when the IRS and the government says they want to restrict what a pastor can say, they are in violation of the constitution.” While Drake and other conservative Christian pastors challenge the IRS rules, other religious leaders. including rabbis and Imams. have signed a pledge to refrain from political speech. ... Daarover gaf hij recent een interview weg aan Benno Barnard: “Multiculti’s zijn de nuttige idioten van de Imams” ( Knack , 28-5-08), een titel die verwijst naar Jansen’s verklaring in dat boek: “Deze multiculti’s zijn in moslimse ogen stuurloze sukkels, eerder deerniswekkende onnozelaars dan serieuze gesprekspartners.” Over de stelling dat het probleem van het islamterrorisme zou zijn opgelost als er maar een volgroeide Palestijnse staat was, verklaarde hij: “Dat is volkomen en volledig onjuist. Als je leest wat Hamas en ook Fatah in hun ideologische geschriften zeggen, begrijp je dat die bewegingen de strijd tegen de joden beschouwen als een fase in de djihaad. Nadat ze Israël verslagen hebben, is de rest van de wereld aan de beurt. It was the first bombing on February 22nd 2006 that destroyed the shrine’s golden dome, and the one that would change Iraq forever. The US Military and the Iraqi Government blamed al-Qaeda in Iraq. Shiites blamed Sunnis for the attack on the shrine that houses the tombs of two of Shiite Islams 12 revered Imams. Soon, reprisal attacks against Sunnis escalated into a bloody sectarian war that plagued the country and claimed tens of thousands of lives. Chills ran down my spine as I thought of the lives lost since that day. The U.S. Military organized our media trip to the city after it was recently listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The security situation in Iraq, including the predominantly Sunni city of Samarra, has changed for the better over the past few months, but little looked like it had changed at the Shrine itself. Rubble from the bombings was still piled high, lining the sides of the road leading to the shrine. The few workers on site looked unenthused. The shrine is now protected by Shiite guards deployed by Iraq's Prime Minister. The tough looking guards asked our U.S. military escorts to stay outside as they took us into the shrine complex.
