SeaCoast Advanced Diagnostic Imaging in Cedarville officially launched its Breast MRI service Oct. 1, the first day of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. SeaCoast officials aim to become the regional industry leader in Breast MRI in an area, specifically Cape Cod, with an abnormally high rate of breast cancer. Medical Director Dr. Gordon Kanzer said the few facilities in the state that provide the service are overburdened. “It’s important to provide access to Breast MR,” he said. “There’s a greater demand for Breast MRI and not a lot of places to go for these tests.” Kanzer said mammography is still the primary scanning tool because the test is often the first sign that someone has breast cancer, but specific questions raised during a mammogram can be answered with Breast MRI. Kanzer said SeaCoast took the time to find experts in breast Imaging to interpret the exams to make the best use of the technology before starting to provide the service to the public. “It’s best done by someone who specializes in breast Imaging because you need to be able to evaluate the mammograms people have had along with the MRI results,” he said. “Mammograms and Breast MRI go hand-in-hand.” Kanzer said a doctor would recommend a patient undergo a Breast MRI for several reasons, including when a patient is determined to be at high risk, when a lesion is found during a mammogram, or if the woman has breast implants. Doctors whose patients have been ...
