A high-paced, difficult, and downright enjoyable top-down shooter well worth trying. Ikaruga, developed by Treasure and now available on Xbox Live Arcade, is a member of the top-down vertical shooter genre. The game play upon first glance is fairly simple in concept; you fly a little plane with hordes of bullets and bad guys coming at you. The bad guys shoot black or white bullets, while your ship can change between black and white... ...

Ikaruga is one hyper vertical shooter that’s definitely not for the faint of heart or slow of thumbs. Available now over the Xbox LIVE Arcade, Ikaruga puts you in the pilot’s seat of a futuristic space fighter that can switch polarities at will to absorb different kinds of projectiles. I’m a huge shooter fan, going back [...] ...

The second figure from the Asu no Yoichi! universe features Ikaruga Ayame. Even though quite a few people had complained about Movic’s figure quality, I think I am willing to take the chance again this time. I think she looks great. Pretty face, full frontal cast-off, dynamic pose, etc. She will be out in September [...] ...

The last one for the day is Ikaruga Ibuki from Movic. I do agree Movic is not always well-known for quality. Even through the promotional photos, you can spot that there is a gap at the blouse’s button area, which I don’t think is supposed to be there. Main attraction seems to be the cast-off [...] ...

One of my pet niggles and something that seems to set off the full set of fire alarms in my head is really bad games journalism. I know, I know - after all these years online I should be fully aware that for every RPS, there’s a pile of colossal cuntwittery unleashed upon the world [...] ...

From what can be seen, the shields of the little ships the guy controls absorb enemy fire of the same color, yet are damaged by the "opposite" colors. Odd game, interesting concept. ...

As someone who has written about videogames for years, I know as well as anyone the annoyance of spell check. Whether it’s Word, Firefox, or whatever else, spell check has been the bane of my existence for the last seven years. Everything from “videogame” to “Shigeru Miyamoto” to “ Ikaruga ,” it’s a constant struggle for anyone in the biz. (I actually type in plain old Notepad now, just out of spite.) Imagine, if you would, what any article about videogames would look like if spell check was to be believed. GamesRadar went through the trouble of actually seeing what kind of world we’d love in if that were the case. The results? Horrifying . There would be no Castlevania – only Televangelist . No Katamari Damacy — just Catamaran Intimacy . No Pikmin – just Minibike , as depicted above. This is a response to Jenova's blog . Consider this where I stand on trading games, and if you have ever been pissed off at the human failure that is EBgames and Gamestop, I recommend its practice to you... Very rarely will I ever trade in games. On average, less than once per console generation have I gone to EBgames with games to trade. I never traded in my SNES games or N64 games because the couple I had were very precious. When I got a job and a Gamecube, I could afford to buy more games. Unfortunately, the job didn't pay well enough for me to think I could afford another system. I didn't even get a PS2 until last year. Without enough money to support wooing the finer sex AND more games, I only traded in the mistakes, or occasionally the games I bought used (which is something I shouldn't do too either, but that's a different issue). For instance, I got rid of Street Fighter vs SNK 2 EO right away because it was terrible on the Gamecube without a decent D-pad. After I put my Gamecube away (:'() I only traded my sports games, the games I knew I would never play again , like Burnout 2, and games I hoped I would never play again, like Sonic Adventure DX. I think that by holding onto games until the system is basically dead, the games suddenly become sort of like collector items. If they can't be found on store shelves then a "one man's trash is another man's treasure" comes into play. If someone hadn't traded in Ikaruga on the Gamecu ...

I stopped by D3Publisher's hotel suite yesterday to check out some of their stuff. I hadn't heard much about Bangai-O Spirits (remember, Dreamcast fans?) which has been out in Japan since March and is hitting here sometime in the fourth quarter, but that's because I generally don't follow shooters. Even I sat up and took notice, though. Bangai-O Spirits , developed by Ikaruga creator Treasure, is hardcore oldschool, from what I could tell by looking, with richly-detailed 2D sprites and both horizontal and vertical scrolling. The awesome thing about it is the full realtime level editor - if you're having a hard time, you can build yourself a little wall, or plow yourself a new path. You can also build your own levels from scratch, but even that's not the best part. The best part is the way you can share levels with your friends. No need for Nintendo Wi-Fi. No need for DS codes. Okay, so I'm easily impressed by science and technology , but I think you guys will think this is very, very cool. You can save the levels you make as sound files, just like the way old data cassettes used to do. When you save a level, it makes a sort of rush-and-whirr sound the way a modem does. You can record it to your PC, save it as a Windows media file or whatever you want, and then put it on a website or email it to a buddy. Anyone who downloads the sound file simply plays it into their DS microphone, and voilà - your friend now has the level you made. ...

The North American version of the PlayStation Store will get a top down shooter shot in the arm tomorrow, according to the official PlayStation blog. Tiki Games' Novastrike —which looks like it's more Time Pilot '08 than it is Ikaruga —will be the first "self-published" game to his the PlayStation Store this Thursday. The official PlayStation blog has video of the PlayStation 3 title in action, a clip that will either have you thinking " Another top down shooter?" or "Another top down shooter!" You make the call. Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3 , Action Our frothing demand for this game increases.* After all, the Sly Cooper series offered some of the prettiest and most fun experiences on PS2. So when Sucker Punch - the folks behind the raccoon - makes an open-world game with super powers and drool-worthy looks, we're all over it. The UK's semi-official PS3 blog, Three Speech , got its digi-mitts on three new screens from inFAMOUS , which, according to the site, will be keeping GameStop employees asking if we want to pre-order it until ... 2009. Still, we'll also surely be seeing more of the game next month at E3. We'd better. Or ... or ... our frothing demand for this game will probably stay just about the same. *Thanks to IGN for the use of their Ikaruga (GCN) box cover quote to kick off this post. Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360 It's not often we read a press release lauding a game for "[updating] the square peg in round hole premise to a whole new level," but that's just how Roogoo is described. You can find out for yourself this Wednesday , either through the demo or by plopping down a virtual Alexander Hamilton (800 MS points). Also coming this Wednesday (and also for 800 MS points) is Aces of the Galaxy , which looks to be a frenetic on-rails space shooter for those who haven't gotten their space shooter fills with Ikaruga. Both titles will be available this Wednesday, June 4 at 4:00 a.m. Joystiq Standard Time. Gallery: Roogoo (XBLA) Gallery: Aces of the Galaxy (XBLA) Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Comments ...

During my review of Assault Heroes 2 this week, two undeniable truths made themselves readily apparent. My first realization is that I absolutely suck at fast-twitch games. Seriously. Filed under: News , Xbox Live Arcade Given the fact that the fourth game in the series is poking fun at the 360's storage size, and that XBLA is well known for memory restrictions ( MGS was bigger than XBLA's limit of 350MB), this rumor doesn't seem too plausible does it? However, the original Metal Gear Solid did find its way to a multitude of platforms and a version of the game (PC) was actually published by Microsoft. According to Ripten , who say their source spotted "the game on a certain pre-release network", Metal Gear Solid could in fact be on the way to an XBLA release. If their source is to be believed, the game appearing on PartnerNet is almost a guarantee that it will see release at some point (though sometimes many months later, as was the case with Ikaruga .) While the Xbox isn't traditionally the home of the series, a port of the second game did find its way there, so perhaps a port of the first isn't so out of the question after all.   Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments ...
