There might be some confusion in the Phillies clubhouse the rest of the month. With So Taguchi already around as a spare outfielder, the Phillies added a second Japanese reserve on Friday by re-signing second baseman Tadahito Iguchi. “People will confuse us,” Taguchi said with a laugh. “We both have Japanese ... ...

By SCOTT LAUBER NEW YORK -- Tadahito Iguchi has rejoined the Phillies. Iguchi, who spent the final two months of last season with the Phillies, has agreed to a contract with the team today. Iguchi was released by the Padres earlier this week after batting .231. The Los Angeles Times reported in today's editions that Iguchi's agent, Rocky Hall , had been contacted by the Phillies and Dodgers. Because he was acquired after Aug. 31, Iguchi isn't eligible to play in the postseason if the Phillies qualify by winning the National League East or the wild card. Iguchi, 33, batted .304 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 45 games for the Phillies last season. He was acquired in late July to replace injured second baseman Chase Utley, who broke his hand. Iguchi figures to be used as a pinch-hitter and possibly at third base. Scott Lauber ...

It's about nine months late, but infielder Tadahito Iguchi is once again a Phillie : Tadahito Iguchi is back. The Phillies are expected to announce today that Iguchi, who played second base last season while Chase Utley was out with a broken hand, has come to a contract agreement with the Phillies. The San Diego Padres recently released Iguchi. Iguchi is expected to join the Phillies before tomorrow's game against the Mets. Iguchi would be ineligible for the postseason should the Phillies win the NL East or wild card. Iguchi hit .304/.361/.442 in 45 games for the Phillies last year. With San Diego in 2008, he fared much worse: .231/.292/.304 in 329 plate appearances. I'm not sure this move is much more than symbolic or even talismanic. But I suppose it can be argued that he's a better pinch-hitting option than anyone else around, other than Dobbs or Stairs. And we all just like the guy, so there's that. ...

Ahhh, first place...What sounds better to a Phillies fan than being in first place? I personally think the reason our team has had such success is the return of one Tadahito Iguchi—the star second basemen of the 2007 campaign who played quite well when senor clutch, aka Chase Utley, was out with a broken hand. We got "Tad" back on Sept. 2 of this year, so he will not be eligible for the postseason roster. However, it seems he brings not only good luck, but his translator, David Yamamoto. One may wonder, "How do you know Tadahito Iguchi's translator's name, and well...a) I am a creepy Phillies fan, and b) THE GUY IS IN EFFING UNIFORM! How ridiculously awesome is it that after every victory, Yamamoto-san walks out on the field in his uniform and shakes hands with the entire team? That is a dream job; especially since Tad never gets an at-bat, his job is exponentially easier because he never has to even translate! So, Phillies fans, we have Yamamoto-san to thank for this continued success. ...

With Jeff Kent out for the Dodgers, they have been forced to go with Blake DeWitt, who is hitting .267 with 7 HR in 95 games this season. While that isn't necessarily bad, the Dodgers would prefer to have a veteran who is familiar with the pitching in the league. Although Tadahito Iguchi struggled, one can attribute that to low morale in the Padres clubhouse as well as playing in a pitcher-friendly stadium. In the month of September, Iguchi is a career .278 hitter with 5 HR in 63 games. He has not played much in Dodger stadium, but is very familiar with the NL West and would likely contribute, at least from a scouting perspective, when playing. The Dodgers have six games remaining against the Padres, and eighteen of their remaining twenty-two games left against the NL West. A different perspective at the scouting meeting could make all the difference in getting them into the playoffs. ...

The Phillies have signed second baseman Tadahito Iguchi for the remainder of the season, in hopes his depth of the bench will help get the Phillies into the playoffs. Iguchi did very well for NL East teams this season, hitting .389, so his signing makes sense. Iguchi is probably a back up second baseman in the future, unless he can improve at third or first base for 2009. ...

Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting that the Padres released Brett Tomko and Tadahito Iguchi following today's game. The move was made to make room on the 40-man roster for prospects Matt Antonelli and Wade LeBlanc . Tomko was 2-7 with a 6.30 ERA in 22 appearances (10 starts) this season. Iguchi was hitting .231/.292/.304 in 81 games this season. Tomko signed a 1-year deal prior to the season that paid him $3MM. Iguchi was given a 1-year extension that paid him $3.85MM this season.
