Brigham's Ice Cream Inc. of Arlington said today that it has appointed Robert Wexler as chief executive while the 94-year-old company "assesses its strategic alternatives." A Brigham's spokesman confirmed a recent story in the Griffin Report of Food Marketing , a trade publication, that Brigham's hired Tully & Holland Inc ., a Wellesley Firm that offers investment banking services, to explore a possible sale or a merger of the company. Brigham's cited tough competition and the rising costs of Ice-Cream ingredients as among the reasons for its decision to explore its options. According to a statement from Brigham's today, Wexler "is committed to maintaining the brand, and the company said there will be no disruption in operations as Wexler explores alternatives for the company." Brigham's also said in its statement: "Like other independent premium Ice Cream brands, Brighams has been subject to a variety of market pressures, including the unprecedented rise in the cost of commodities and the price of fuel and utilities." In addition, Brigham's said it faces "heavy competition from a highly consolidated industry that, unlike Brigham's, has not been committed to quality," but has made "huge investments in technological innovation, packaging changes, promotional discounting, and cost-cutting." According to the story in the Griffin Report, Brigham's had gross sales of about $20.2 ... Source: www.nydailynews.com --- 31 days ago
Barack Obama launched his first trip as the presumptive Democratic nominee to war zones and foreign capitals, stopping in Kuwait, where he met with US troops, and Afghanistan ( here's the pool report from his departure), where he met with President Hamid Karzai . Obama suggested adding two or three more brigades to the US deployment in Afghanistan. There was considerable confusion over a statement by Iraqui Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki, who was quoted as endorsing Obama's plan for withdrawing troops from Iraq and then said the quote was mistranslated . While Obama was overseas, John McCain was raising campaign cash in the Hamptons. McCain also attended a Yankees game with his opponent-turned-supporter Rudy Giuliani. The neatly-planted central green with its classic wooden gazebo; the wide brick walkways with vintage-style lampposts and seating areas; and the dramatic double waterfall feature, give the area a leisurely, pedestrian-friendly air. It’s a pleasant place to stroll, browse, and enjoy an Ice Cream cone. But it’s not a town square or public park. When Wayside Commons, the unique lifestyle shopping center on Wayside Road in Burlington, was designed, the developers envisioned a vibrant center, with ties to the local community, and outdoor activities adding to the village-style ambience. “We’d love to increase the level of outdoor, community-related activity at the center.” says Chris Cardoni, marketing manager at KeyPoint Partners, the Burlington real estate service Firm which manages and leases Wayside Commons. “A local theatre group performing a preview of an upcoming production, an outdoor exhibit by local artists, or a musical performance in the gazebo — we invite local schools, arts organizations, and other groups to promote their activities, and add to the life of this center.” Wayside Commons also welcomes local businesses, buildings and office parks. “Not long after the center opened, we hosted ‘Lahey Clinic Night at Wayside Commons,’” Cardoni said. “It’s a unique place for a special shopping and dining event for employees or clients. We have a terrific roster of merchants here.” Retailers and restaurants at the lifestyle cente ...

Unilever saw its share price fall over seven per cent this morning after results showed flat sales. As a global slowdown increases, the Anglo-Dutch maker of household products such as Dove, Cif, Omo and Domestos saw sales growth of 6.8 per cent in the second quarter of 2008. However, this growth was driven by a 7.4 per cent rise in prices. All growth in Europe at 2.3 per cent came from price increases the Firm admitted, as sales volumes fell 2.9 per cent. Unilever particularly noted a fall in Ice Cream sales in Europe. Pre-tax profits fell four per cent to 1,353 million (£1,066.7 million). Patrick Cescau, Unilever group chief executive, said: "Our performance in the first half year has been good in what has been a challenging environment. "Looking to the future, our strategy leverages our strong brands, broad geographic footprint and products that meet everyday needs across a wide range of price points." In London the Unilever share price fell 7.15 per cent to 1,402p at 9:37 BST. mform ... Source: www.cityam.com --- 64 days ago
There was much needed good news for Hill Station today as the troubled Ice Cream maker agreed a new invoice discounting facility and said first half earning are in line with forecasts. The Firm, whose shares plunged to around 0.17p from over 10p in 2004, said it now has a maximum funding limit of £3m under the facility with Cattles Invoice Finance. An extra £0.5m of loan stock has also been agreed with shareholders. News in April that bankers intended to cap the amount of the Firm's invoice discounting facility at £1.1m forced it to scale back the usual inventory build in spring, harming sales during April and May. But the factory is now regularly hitting record levels of production as stocks are being rebuilt following new business wins with large retail and wholesale customers. "The outcome for the six months to 30 April 2008 is encouraging with EBIT being in line with management expectations notwithstanding the difficulties caused by the cash constraints arising from the bank's decision to cap the factoring facility," said the AIM listed group. ...
