I am not new to triathlon, but just completed my first half IRONMAN this weekend. It was an awesome experience! I didn't know what to expect from the aid stations on the bike. I was actually expecting them to be set up similiar to that of a century bike ride. None of the stations had port-a-potties, and the volunteers held out bottles of water or gatorade, and you swapped your old empty bottle for a new one if you wanted. This was great except for the no port-a-potty part. Is this normal? I had to pee so bad on the second half of the ride (ride was two loops) that I finally found a tree. The Longhorn IRONMAN 70.3 Austin is still accepting entries but it's nearing it's capacity. Only about 100 race entries are available at this time. The triathlon was expected to draw nearly 2000 participants. The inaugural race in Austin, TX is still 65 days out, scheduled to take place on Sunday, October 5th, 2008. If you are interested in racing, make sure to register soon so you don't miss out. Other race registration options for this triathlon include Relay Teams and an AquaBike Division. The race will have 50 qualifying slots for the 2009 IRONMAN World Championship 70.3 race in Clearwater, Florida. The race replaces the Longhorn Triathlon Festival which usually took place around the same time in previous years. Dr. Stephen Tomek is setting an example for his patients. The Penfield Pediatrics doctor, who resides in East Rochester, has participated in numerous triathlons, but now has set his sight on the half IRONMAN Triathlon in Austin, TX., on Oct. 5. “About a year ago one of my friends asked me if I wanted to do one, and I said sure,” Tomek said. “I do several sprint sports. It's a new challenge for me. It's healthy for me as I always try to stay in good health. I've been doing biking, swimming, running. It's pretty good on your body and it doesn't beat you up too bad. “I've done five sprint triathlons. I'm training right now for a half IRONMAN Triathon on Sunday, Oct. 5, in Austin, Texas. That's the biggest one I've done so far.” The sprint triathlon consists of 800 yards of swimming, 14 miles of biking, and the run is usually a 5K. The half IRONMAN consists of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and a half marathon (13+ miles). The half IRONMAN takes about 6-7 hours to complete, while Tomek has completed the sprint triathlons between 1:19 and 1:35. “The distance is a huge jump so I'm approaching it from a standpoint of finishing it, not necessarily being very, very competitive,” Tomek said. “In the sprints, I tend to try to be more competitive. I've been doing them awhile and I'm more comfortable with them. “This one is such a long distance, the challenge is to get through it.
