Marvel Studios' first production and this summer's current top-grosser IRON MAN , has been so successful, grossing over $560 million worldwide, that it was a foregone conclusion that a Sequel would happen sooner rather than later. What might be surprising is that according to Variety , they're changing writers for the second movie, going with actor/filmmaker Justin Theroux to pen the Sequel, which is planned for a late April release in 2010. ...

Filed under: Deals , Scripts , Comic/Superhero/Geek Oddly enough we're told it's Justin Theroux, who's making his screenwriting debut with Tropic Thunder a bit later this summer. Yes, that would be the same Justin Theroux who played the immortal role of Adam Kesher in Mulholland Dr. and the badass Irishman Seamus O'Grady in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle . The trade piece breaking the story gives no hint of why Marvel Studios thought of Theroux for the project, and I couldn't find out anywhere else, but I'm sure someone will give an interview soon enough. Last year, Theroux directed an indie called Dedication from someone else's script, starring Tom Wilkinson and Billy Crudup. It got mediocre reviews and I missed it, despite my eagerness to watch anything with Wilkinson. If a career change is what the actor was after, he certainly got it: writing IRON MAN 2 is a pretty plum gig. Can you imagine? Of course, I tend to doubt that the Sequel -- which is set for release in April, 2010 -- is going to wind up with just one screenwriter when all is said and done. Theroux's draft will probably be reworked, retouched and polished a dozen times. But it's cool that the actor-turned-director-turned-scribe will at least take a first crack. SCREENWRITER, actor and director Justin Theroux - cousin of the BBC journalist and documentary-maker Louis Theroux - has been hired to write the Sequel to superhero blockbuster IRON MAN, acccording to showbiz magazine Variety. Robert Downey Jr is also set to reprise his role as Tony Stark, a billionaire inventor who invents a hi-tech suit of armour to become the title character. Director Jon Favreau has reportedly already agreed to return for the follow-up, due out in April 2010. Theroux, 36, made his film debut in 1996's I Shot Andy Warhol. He has since performed on Broadway and has had TV appearances in Ally McBeal, Spin City, Sex and the City and Six Feet Under. His movie roles include American Psycho (in 2000) Mulholland Drive (2001) and as baddie Seamus O'Grady in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003). He also appeared in 2006's Miami Vice film based on the 80s police drama. Theroux (pictured left, and also top left in his Charlie's Angels role as a mob leader) co-wrote - and also appears in - the upcoming Ben Stiller-directed action comedy Tropic Thunder, out next month. The first IRON MAN, released in May and which has so far made $565million worldwide at the box office, was written by Mark Fergus, Hawk Ostby, Arthur Marcum and Matthew Hollaway. There has been no reason given for why Marvel studios has not retained the original writing team. ...

SUPERHERO fans online are breathing a collective sigh of relief after a report that claims IRON MAN director Jon Favreau has now accepted a Marvel Studios offer to take on the Sequel. Deadline Hollywood Daily says the director and studio have now reached a deal after Marvel put out a "definitely richer offer" to Favreau. Nothing has yet been officially announced. Robert Downey Jr was already contracted to appear in the Sequel, which would start filming in March next year for release in April 2010. Favreau had earlier said he wasn't consulted on the release date and thought it was unrealistic considering they didn't yet have a script, story or writers. He had said he'd be happier with a three-year gap between films, as happened with the X-Men and Batman. Favreau is pictured above (on right) with Downey Jr, whom he cast in the role of Tony Stark, the billionaire inventor who designs a hi-tech suit of armour to become IRON MAN. The director has said he wants IRON MAN's classic comicbook nemesis Mandarin in the next movie. ...

By Monday morning, The Dark Knight (Warner Bros) will likely be the No. 1 movie of 2008. Even the rosiest of forecasts could not have anticipated that the Christopher Nolan-directed Batman Begins Sequel would surpass Marvel’s IRON MAN (Paramount) and Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones & The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull (Paramount) in only 10 days, but it appears that the dark superhero/crime thriller hybrid will do just that ...

Photo: Getty Images Over the past decade, actor Justin Theroux has long been a quiet player on the indie film scene, adding his slightly whiny charm to movies like The Baxter , Broken English , and Mulholland Drive . Lately, though, he's been even more accomplished behind the scenes, directing last year's Dedication starring Billy Crudup, being asked to write the upcoming Sequel to IRON MAN (!), and collaborating on the script for this week's Tropic Thunder with Ben Stiller and Etan Cohen. The other day, Theroux spoke to Vulture about war moves, the Simple Jack controversy, and why IRON MAN 2 won't be anything like The Dark Knight . So the movie is pretty over-the-top. How did you and Ben Stiller decide when to draw the line between funny and… Heeeere we go. I know what's coming. [ Laughing ] I can see ten minutes into the future! Well … I was going to say, between the funny and the totally ridiculous. Neither he nor I are fans of cruel humor. Like the kind of humor that just makes people feel shitty. We're very careful when we tee up our subject, which was Hollywood and actors here. So obviously Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.), as sort of the most risqué character, was the one we were most careful with. There's nothing funny about African-American jokes, but there's something very funny about actors playing African-Americans when they're white. We wanted to do a send-up of those Method actors who become anorexic and dysmorphic when ...
